So after having lost interest in all things warhammer for a while, the Horus Heresy 2.0 has rekindled my interest in both warhammer and space marines. I managed to find one of the last boxes of plastic MkIII Marines that were released for use in 40k, and 3d printed a contemptor dread to test the scheme whilst I waited for them to arrive in the mail.
When the plastic marines arrived I took some measurements so I could add some 3d printed parts to make them look more Dark Angel-y. (and add special/heavy weapons in the future)
I'm trying to hide the fact that I'm terrible at highlighting black by adding some weathering powder and a few freehand details. Hopefully the powder dries up nicely and I'll be able to make them look 'done' by highlighting the reds & metals, and touching up the details.

Nutty is back!! And with an update!
They look great. I especially appreciate the checkered pattern on the dread.
Funnily enough I’ve started my own HH Dark Angels.
Keep up the good work!

It's good to be back. I like the checkers as well, they are not as difficult to freehand as I thought they would be so I started adding some to the infantry as well. I just need to clean up the lines.
Have you thought of a HH force to work towards? I'm thinking about focusing on the Dreadwing myself; some landraiders with those plasma destroyers, a unit of terminators in a spartan with the named HQ, and a pair of medusas in support with a siegebreaker (for phospex shells and support). And then some tacticals and different flavours of dreadnought to fill out the roster.

Yeah, they look great, I will have to copy you on that one!
I’m not at the stage where I’m picking a theme yet. It’s more that I’m buying the models I want to paint!
A Dreadwing force would be badass! Solid idea all round.
Can’t wait to see what’s coming.

I really like the idea of the dreadwing as being the "warcrime" department of the legion. Trying to get as many 'forbidden' weapons into the list, and maybe a psyker since they got stuck in their after Nikea.
The named character also gets to take the special DA terminators instead of a command squad, so that's a fun option.

They definitely do the dirty work!
I don’t have the book but I’ve seen that we can get special ammunition for missile launchers!
That model for the Dreadwing is something else! He’ll look amazing leading the Inner Cycle Knights.
What do you have on the painting table atm?

Yeah, and they get to play around with all the stuff that is locked away in the vaults of the rock.
I didn't have much time this weekend so it's still the dread & marines I posted. Next up will be 10 more tactical marines and a Rhino. I have an interior/upgrade kit for it so it will be able to double as a damocles command rhino.

Cool!
Quick question, do the Forgeworld Rhino doors fit the new kit?

I'm not sure but I would assume so. There was a picture comparing the sizes of the new Deimos rhino and the regular plastic one and they where almost the same size. And GW has mentioned that they are planning to release plastic kits for the units shared between legions, with legion specific units/upgrades staying a Forgeworld thing.
My plan is to mix and match GW, FW, and 3D printed parts. The Rhino I'm planning is 100% 3d printed, it's a bit fiddly, so I might get some GW Rhino's when they are released (and back in stock) and just print the upgrades.

Loving it, good to see you back! All this new plastic heresy has been giving me the itch too. Looking forward to seeing more

Thanks Walk, I've not had much time to work on them, but it's been a whilst since I felt the urge to do anything hobby related so it's nice to be back 'in'.
Jud; I've seen those, but I plan on mostly using MkIII since I like how it fits with the DA knightly theme.

Yeah, I’m going the same way. Mkiii for the majority and mkvi for special units.
Do you know what the minimum troops quota is? It’s been a long time since I used a Force organisation chart!!

I think it's 2-3 depending on the FoC.
But certain rites of war will let you take other units as troops, like 'pride of the legion' (or something similar) letting you take veterans and terminators as troops. Those will usually have a 'cost' associated with them, like your opponent getting extra vp for killing them.

Cheers nutty! I’m thinking 2 squads in Rhinos and a blob of 20!

Actually I've got a Leviathan with a siege claw, siege drill and phospex discharger on the top for a Raven Guard army I'm (slowly) working on. Only one though, it would be unfair fielding three of those monstrous beasts with T8 Nice Contemptor - got 3 of those to assemble and the new kit is like 100 pieces per dread..

So it turns out there is a looot of warcriminals in my area.. out of the 12ish guys that are playing heresy in my local store 4 are running Dark Angels. All of them planning/building Dreadwing armies... So for varieties sake I put my dark angels aside for a bit and started work on these guys:

Wow! Robots!
Wasn't expecting Mechanicum, mainly as it's mostly FW. I felt the pinch after getting 10 Dark Furies and 2 land speeder proteus.
Just out of interest how many out of 12 are playing loyalist/ traitor?
It's interesting that you can play any army as loyalist or traitor (except for Daemons of the Ruinstorm).

there's about a 50/50 split I think. But the traitor legions are more varied; Sons of Horus, Night lords, Iron Hands, alpha legion 2x, and loyalists are 4x Dark Angels and 1X Imperial Fists. than there's one guy that says he's doing a different legion about once a week.
It's interesting that most armies can be used on both sides, makes balancing multiplayer campaigns/battles a lot easier I think. But I have yet to play. I need to get an HQ choice sorted an get an actual game in.. but for now I'm happy building/painting some robots

Yeah I haven't played anything for ages.
The rules for HH are quite complex as well. Made about a million mistakes writing my list. For instance an apothecary isn't an independent character so they can't take Corvid pattern jump packs, so I had to upgrade to Primus Medicae. You can't put apothecaries in squads with independent characters or with terminators (unless it'a a Primus) and the same for Techmarines, who *have* to be in a squad unless they're on a super expensive jetbike.
Still got to read the Mechanicum book. Presumably you can use the plastic Techpriest Dominus from 40k as an HQ.

Nice collection of big stompy robots!
Highlighting black is a pain, it seems the right brush is required, and a light drybrush of grey followed by a lighter drybrush of white, though there's so little pigment on the brush in order to stop it looking 'dusty' that it takes forever!
(my boy's been building a Tau army whose paint scheme is predominantly black with bit of orange).
Great looking stuff and nice work on the chequer pattern on the contemptor.

So.. rather than complete a project I decided to start a new one. And I figured i'd might as well start putting everything in the same thread.
I started working on a fantasy army for 'the old world' (or oldhammer/9th age/WaP)
Right now the army consists of these two guys, but I'm planning to add a few more

Looking good!
I’m planning on doing Tomb Kings for Old World.
As for starting loads of projects, I feel that variety is the spice of life and keeps things fresh!
