I have always considered officers as independent characters and they have therefore always been able to picked out in CC. But resent reading in the Imperial Guard-codex after that a friend of mine were asking questions about the rules have made me doubt it.
CodexImperialGuard, p 38 "The Officer is an independent character. However, he must remain within 2" of his Command squad at all times and may not leave it. If it is wiped out, the Officer reverts to being an independent character."
How should I interpret reverts? 1That he isn't a IC until his command squad is wiped out? 2That he is a IC that cannot join other squads until his command squad is wiped out?
Personally I think the second exampel would be the correct one.

You're correct. With a single exception*, all independant characters within squads chosen as part of their FOC slot (Officer with Command Squad, Space Marine Captain with bodyguard, ect) are required to stay with their retinue. In all ways except for close combat, the IC is treated as just another member of the retinue unit. He cannot willingly leave a Retinue, can be isolated by the "Torrent of Fire" rule, ect. Untill the Retinue is wiped out, at which point the regular Independant Character rules are back in effect.
*The only exception to this is Shas'O Shaserra (Commander Shadowsun) of the Tau Empire. O'Shaserra and her 3 drones form a unit like normal, however, while most IC battlesuits can still join other units, Shadowsun is specifically treated as an Upgrade Character (veteran sergeant, ect) and thus cannot be isolated in close combat.

Thanks. I just felt unsure about just that particular rule, so it felt like the only right thing to do was asking you guys.

Page 26, the paragraph that starts "Under normal circumstances..." Essentially, when you roll more wounds (before saves) than your target unit has Wounds, you pick one model, the opponent picks one incomming attack, and saves against that. If the particular save is failed, the special weapons trooper/character is wounded and must be taken as a casualty if dead.

I knew the rule, but didn't think it counted for independent characters. 1 to remember .
