i really like the tau models, especially fire warriors and stealth battlesuits. However, all of the tau units (ie not kroot) are crap. they couldnt fight in combat for all the tea in china and are crap at shottig which in their fluff says they are best at! alos they are described as coreagous and honourable in their fluff, and they have ld7! what do you think?

the Tau are good; Guard are just as good at hitting things as Tau and they too are LD7. And, if played right, the Tau can blow the crap out of close combat troops befpre they become a threat. Tau can almost always out shoot all but the shootiest of Guard and Iron warrior armies. So Tau arent crap at all (except when compared to marines; but what isnt crap when compared to marines?)

The thing to remember is, Marines are the finest warriors in the galaxy.
BS 3 is the average trained soldier, and LD 7 is the average Leadership for a basic guy.
Bonded Tau with a Sarge work well, I've seen it happen. Also, lots of suits and firewarriors are also good. I get my ass handed to me by Tau in 1K games. The opponent fields perhaps 36 bonded Tau in 3x12 units, two units of two suits, and a Commander in a suit, backed up by an Ion Cannon Hammerhead. Sure, his army lacks AT power against like, a Russ, but the sheer volume of S5 shots rips up my infantry in a couple of turns. They have a great range, too, good armour against return fire, and they are not half bad in combat. Compare him with a Guardsmen against a Marine.
Marine hits on a 3+, wounds on a 3+, and strikes first. He does this against both races.
Guard hit him on a 4+, wound him on a 5+, and he has a 3+ save.
Tau stats for striking back are more or less the same. Hit on a 4+, wound on a 5+, then a 3+ save. WS 2 only comes in against WS5 (hitting them on a 5+) or WS 3 (getting hit on a 3+, rather than the 4+ for the "average soldier).
Given time, you can master any army. Don't be too put off by it. They have some awesome units that my mate doesn't use, in 1K, like Stealth Teams, Pathfinders, and Broadsides. Not to mentioned MORE suits, Kroot, Etherals, Hammerhead Railgun varients, and Devilfish.

etherals are an odd one, my missus uses one in the patrol games, it only amounts to a fire warrior team, pathfinders, and the etheral, but it means one of her squads is fearless and the other re-rolls morale tests. It makes them a pain to shift if they get to cover. (and the etheral is a bit better than most tau at cc) With the etheral on the table, the honourable thing comes in to play a lot more.

I think the Tau suck Now, don't get me wrong, the Tau themself suck with their average BS and weak WS. It's just that they have the best equipment in the galaxy, just look at the Pulse Rifle, a standart trooper can shoot down tanks (from the side or back, ok) and the suits are very powerfull with endless combat capabilities.
But thats the whole fluff about it, isn't it. The tau itself is not strong, but their equipment is very powerfull

the tau can one of the things to stop....... when in the right hands . my friend is not one of the best with tau, ok hes pretty crap. he cant pick the right things to shoot at and he deploys all wrong, but he can still put up a fight fire warrior hurt when you try to get to them ( even marines git hurt), battle suits annoy me personally. so don't dis tau cause one day ur gonna face some one can use the blue little me, and they are probably gonna whoop ur butt

The problem is, the only 'facts' are what you yourself will find out in the course of playing. When it comes to forgiveness of dice and less than optimum movement and target selection, Space marines are perfect to learn the game with.
SM were my first, however there were too many SM armies in my area so I went out to be different. My choices were down to Guard and Tau. Guard won out for the simple fact that I, as a player, relate to the army style better than to the Tau. You watch any scifi war movie of the past 30 years and its easy to see the Guard as those human troops.
Tau have a few tricks which make them enticing to play and a pain to play against, but thats the way the game goes. The Guard have the benefits of lines of troops, supporting advancing Armor and special forces doing the dirty work. Add in some Banner waving like the early part of the First World war and you got yerself a playable force that you know within your heart. Thats the Guard.

probably why most people dislike tau is because there standard weapon is cheesy and they suck at CC but they are a foil for nids
but i will say this they should find a CC alien (kroot dont count) and use em especially far sight (maybe he could pacify some orks by giving them shiny things)

their standard weapon isnt cheesey. it fits their fluff. they hate combat, so why would they invent a short ranged weapon? as for the power of it, that fits with their advanced technology.

Of course th thing is that GW had to severly gimp the Tau in order to fit them into 40k. In reality the Tau would be almost seamless marksmen due to their intensive training and sophisticated targetting systems built into their weapons (not mentioned in tabletop). Battlesuits would have a much more powerful armor save and HH would never miss. The railgun would destroy anything in one shot no matter what and Their Navy could send an entire world into an ice age with a sinlge shot of a Heavy Railgun. The only thing taht keeps the imperium safe from the tau is their numbers and their space travel. Since the Tau are a tiny empire they cannot call upon the limitless manpower of the imperium, even if they do have the largest army proportional to their population. Also tau don't have warp travel, they have soething similar but they gave up on trying to create it after what happened at Medusa V. The only option now is to create an FTL drive like the necrons. Now of only the IMperium could se reason and join the greater good.
Good Hunting

Tau suck with thier leadership. then along come the Kroot
Master Shaper - LD 10 Shaper Council - LD9 Everything Else - LD8
Plus, the Kroot have one Character who can be taken, and can join Tau units.

I dont overlooks kroot at all, why would you accuse me of that? I just don't like HtH so I perfer to use more FoF FW squads and less kroot. Although i don't completly overlooks kroot, they still do pack quite a punch and are cheaper and can have about the same number of guys in a squad as orks. If thats what floast your boat go for it, make an all Kroot list, i just couldn't live without my precious Railguns
