Well, i was just wondering if there was a reason everyone here chose the Imperial Guard, over the other choices of armies.
For my it was because when i was looking at each army to choose, i really liked "weak" humaninty versus the monsturous and advanced aliens of the universe. The small humans using pure determanation and grit to destoy the most advanced and powerful aliens. And the idea of having some of the best tanks in the game sparked my interest ;D

flavor of the month. the cadian line was just coming out, it was the eye of terror campaign and I liked the cadian models and their paint scheme. I remember sitting in bed the night before I bought my first box of troops and thinking about what colors I'd paint them - eventually I conceeded that GW had picked the best colors and I just stuck with the standard issue cadian scheme (the release of catachan green and commando khaki totally sealed the deal too - they were the sweetest colors GW had ever released in my book - not all crayon-ish like dark angels green and even camo green - the new colors felt really gritty and made for guard - made to give the models a chance to survive against the foes of the imperium). anyhow yeah. I got the cadians when they first were released and haven't looked back (very often or for very long) since

That and the fact that I'm a treadhead.

i am a tread head myself, also the fact that i was in the army and could not abide the idea of playing marines.
Much like Turtleboy when i was first getting interested in the game i looked around alot and all of a sudden they came out with the 3rd edition boxed set.Well that was ok but i really wanted to play with tanks and stuff. Then a few days later i saw Codex : Catachan and i was totally hooked on the little ogryns( looks around to see if a catachan is hiding in the bushes).
i bought like 3 battle forces of them, tons of sentinals and bits to convert things.I moved on to the Valhallens after that to make a mobile force with lots of tanks and haven't looked back since.

Took me 14 years before I started with my first IG army... My Vostroyans. Why... well I wanted something unusual, that many players dont have. Also I love the simpler things and what should be the normal things in the game, and that is normal humans. I regret that I havent taken up IG earlier, but thats my loss. I still had fun playing my other armies over the years.

Closest to todays armies, so there was a lot of scope for colour schemes, and such as, plus the Cadian Range is a pretty cool line, along with the Tanks, maybe not as much scope for Tanks, but they are the best in my Opinion. Plus, I wanted as many troops for 20 quid, and that was a Box of Cadian Shock Troops.

I simply went. mmmmmm that ones got the most men! Plus they seem less pansy than some of the others.
but mainly it was how many troops you got in a box.

I started IG when I first saw the Elysian army list in Chapter approved....I had been tempted by the fact that they were humans (no super warriors and so on....) and by the fact that in my area they were not very played.

When I became interested in the hobby, Imperial Guard were not available in plastic form so my first army came along with the boxed set of the game. This was the 2nd edition game which came with 20 Space Marines, 20 orks and 40 gretchin so these were the base of my first two armies. I had an (extremely poorly painted) Ultramarines army as my first army and an ork army that never really went anywhere. ANYWAY! When I turned 15, I had been in the hobby for about five years and I seemed to think that I didn't want to do it anymore (girls and beers started becoming more interesting) so I sold my entire collection of miniatures to a snotty-nosed kid for about £10! Unfortunately (or luckily), this absurd idea of stopping the hobby only lasted for about a week. To all you new players out there, I have to tell you now that once you're in you are in for life, whether you like it or not! So anyway, I went into the local GW to get a fresh start. I picked up the new White Dwarf and lo and behold! A new range of Imperial Guard were due to come out! PLASTIC IMPERIAL GUARD!!! Somehow, I was drawn to these strapping lads with lasrifles and bandanas. I don't know if it was their Rambo-muscles or their cool wifebeater-vests but as soon as they came out I bought a box of Catachan Jungle Fighters, Codex Imperial Guard and Codex Catachans (the exellent Deathworld Veterans supplement). From then on, I was hooked. I completely fell in love with the Imperial Guard. Their familiar humanity is what makes them so appealing. They are the only race in the game with real personality. They have something to lose. Something to fight for. A family back home to defend. And they have no choice! They would rather NOT be fighting, but they do. This is why I play Imperial Guard. They are the real heroes of the Imperium of Man. "Eldar, Tyranids, insurrectionists, heretics and the forces of Chaos assail the Imperium at every turn. Everywhere you look, behind every tree and under every stone the enemies of Mankind and the Emperor plot to overthrow 40,000 years of progress and beneficent rule. What could possibly stand against an entire galaxy of evil, destruction and hatred? You, my friend because like it or not, you're in the army now!"

I wanted to start and the I really liked the IG minis. Friends told me that the IG is weak and recommended me to start with Marines (Chaos or Imperial). So I started with CSM (Night Lords). I didn't like painting Marines and stopped after the first squad and bought my first boxes of plastic cadians.

Ha, yeah i remeber that, my freind still bugs me every time i loose (no matter how close it was) "Wow, the imperial guard are weak", but this makes the victory so much sweeter when i do stomp his so-called "superior" space marines.

My first army was Dark Angels because my mate gave me a 1000pt DA army when I first started (back in 2nd ed days.)
Whilst building my DA army up (ended up with about 10,000 pionts) I started planning my IG army and buying the odd tank.
A GW shop near me had a reopening day with a special offer of buy three boxes/ blisters and get the cheapest free. So off I popped with my list and some £400 later somehow made it home with my complete IG army, this was still 2nd ed days with the metal cadians.
Unknown to me GW were gearing up to release 3rd ed with plastic cadians (which looked way cooler). By the time I'd built and painted my metal army the plastic ones came out and I ended up selling them.
So I never got to use my first IG army in anger, I'd spent a lot of time converting things and the new rules made them illegal or next to useless.

As a kid i had always loved playing 'indians and cowboys' but one day i spotted warhammer and was totally hooked, so i saved up my sad weekly sum of $15 and bought a battleforce. I've been collecting hard ever since.

For me its because they are humans. It helps me relate to them that extra little bit. It allowed me to play this little game within a game where I randomly stuck a bit of bluetac under a base of one of the models and tried to keep which model it is a secret from myself. I pretend that the model is me, and at the end of the game I see if I`ve survived or died. Unfortunately my career within the Imperial guard was short lived.
Oh and also the tanks are a major appeal.

was it that white dwarf with that beautiful armored company article? man those tanks are so sweet if you know the issue I'm talking about *drool* You mean the one with all the convered Rhinos and Chimeras, with a Command Tank that has double Tracks wide? And a Commissar Tank covered in Purity Seals? And a Techiprist Engineseer in a Converted Rhino with Chimera Turret. Yes, I do belive thats The Dragoons, and all the tanks were named after Auther and his Knights of the round Table.

many moons ago in the days of RT i had a regiment of squats & RTIG after a few years out of the game i returned to find no squats and a apparent radical shift in the IG after fishing about a bit i found that i could bring back the purity of the RTIG under new rules. and was best pleased
