I started beacuse of studying WW1 and imagined basilisks giving covering fire and then thousands of men charging the enemy. I also had a space marine army and daemon hunters army before but I never really got into the hobby. But i might get compensation money to start my IG army.

well trooper 249 squats where a race of space dwarves they had mad max style war trikes and terminator style heavy armour speciel troops with lots of rank and file troops armed with las guns abd heavy bolters, they where a good troop choice back in the days of RT (rouge trader) which was the 1st full rule book for for 40k it was very complicated you had loads of different dice to use (terminators were even harder to kill) and had to make loads of referance's to the book (RT) in playing RTIG were simply the imperial guyard used for rouge trader they were a pretty poor choice having nearly no decent weapons or transport you did however have jet bikes, landspeeders, robots, motor bikes, and sentinals though they were quite expensive in correspondence with the plastic minis (36 platic for about £12) as i remember, and because of the complicated nature of RT quite hard to use, the rouge trader IG troops looked something like modern cadians apart from the helmets were cooler almost roman esque, i have aquired 36 recently which i have cleaned with break fluid and repaired as best i can so soon once i've painted them i will post a picture of them, as for you TB well done on your promotion to mod, yes squats were very cool if you can get hold of some off Ebay i recomend you do. though the squat race was destroyed by the imperium you can still use them just claim there a last survivors hiden out in deep space (this is great scinerio to play against guard as a sort of warsaw uprising type scinerio) the rules to use are partly from the orc codex and partly from the IG codex or alternativly get a copy of rouge trader and try playing those style rules, you will be glad to get back to 4th edition. anything else i can help with from back in the day ask away i started playing with IG back in 1990 as a tender 11 year old, so i remeber RT quite well.

It was the sentinel model that drew me to I.G. That and the Eldar Jet bike. I know it sounds strange, but I had an Idea to make a Star Wars theme'd army and I.G. became the natural choise. Sentinels look like AtSt s with out any conversions, there was an option in the list even titled Storm Trooper, and I was thinking an Eldar jet bike with a guard on it would look like one of those zippy bikes from Endor and be a rough rider. So I bought a bunch of Armaggedon Sent.s and Tanks. That army is defunct now. No real viablility. Some how my second competition army also came from the I.G. codex. I like taking a more challenging path to victory. And I'll find the path with I.G.

awesome datajax; yeah, the sentinel really drew me in too - it was one of the reasons I noticed the fine new (at the time) cadian plastics coming out in the first place...ah dreams of a sentinel army! I still want more sentinels (though my token 1 sentinel has never had company on the field...)

I've been playing 40k since Rouge Trader in the early 90's - I only started with IG about 2 months ago - I don't get to play all that often, so I've only had three games with them so far!
I must admit I have always fancied an IG army but was always daunted by the sheer number of models that I would need to paint. However, I felt after collecting SM, Tau and Tyranids I was up to the challenge and it was time... So here I am.
The main driving factor for my decision to finally get myself down to the recruiting hall and sign up were the excellent Cadian plastics, the old metal minis just did not do it for me.

Well, it was the only one I identified with, the humans fighting against the odds in the 41st millenium!

i chose IG because i like the look of modern day armies. i looked at the imperial guard and decided to collect them.

It seems all of us should pay some respect towards our own race, be it in fiction or in modern day life, we should all be proud that we stand here on this ragged patch of earth, and that we managed to gain dominance

The guard have, by far, the most character. They're the only army you can truly make your own.
No, you cant do it with any other army. All Space marines look pretty much the same. So do all nids, tau, eldar, sisters etc. Your only difference is a paint-scheme and some small conversion work.
I think Orks are a decent second, but they're far and away beaten by guard in terms of characterful. The sheer range of models is mindblowing. Before starting elysians, i had a cadian army, all of their heads were kasrkin heads. You dont see that anywhere else. Soon, i'll have a squad of Helghast (killzone for ps2) lookin' dudes sculpted and painted up and in the photo section.
The sheer difference is mindblowing. That's what drew me to the guard.

The humanity. I love the idea of regular guys taking on the horrors of the 40K universe and coming out on top. I like the ability to convert and customize as well.

Well I use to collect BT, but only really for the models. My main army were Tau however. I use to play these guys all the time, still do now and again but anyway I got a bit bored of whizzing around with loads of mobile firepower and shooting the bejeus into everything. Belive it or not, this tactic can get pretty old soon. So I decided a armoured company was a fun option. This was about November time. I started writing a list of what I wanted in the army and I was really exited about it, then I saw the nes DK models and dropped the tank list totaly because I loved the new models so much! bit imeture really, but oh well!

not at all, that's why I started IG - the cadians were new and looked so great, especially painted up in the cadian 7th colors (commando khaki and catachan green). 4 years later or whatever and I'm still here with a big ol' army of nicely painted cadians liking the heck outta the models is one of the prerequisites for having a successful guard army in my opinion.
