I got bored of having nobody to play against in LOTR so I took up guard because of the commissars. They looked so cool and the valhallan troops looked like soviets. Then it was shock troops.

I collect guard because we are just plain humans. We don't have fancy armour or weapons. Guard win through detrmation and a lot of guts put behind a bayanet. Its the the men and women of the Imperial Guard that hold the fragile fabric of the imperium together. We do 98% of the fighting For every 1 space marine there are billions of Guardsmen fightsing for hunanites survial. We do all the work.
The Imperial Guard will fight...they will die... But they will hold the line.

I found that i wanted to collect IG cause of the fact that they use what we call as "traditional strategy" as in, they use the same kind of equipment we use today in modern armies (to an extent, no psykers or lascannons lol)

I've always had an interest in Imperial Guard, however whn I first came into the hobby GW had this annoying habit of not stocking ones favourite armies or not releasing an entire range of models (this was to continue for some years), but then one day when reading White Dwarf I read in my opinion one of the greatest battle reports ever 'The Great Devourer'. That was it then, there was no going back and I was hooked, my very first purchases where 2 squads of Catachan Jungle Fighters, a squad of Atillan Rough Riders and a Leman Russ Battle Tank, don't ask what drove me to this selection as I have no idea.

I started an IG force because it looked cooler than the other forces available. That and I'm a zipperhead (armoured crewman) IRL, so I was attracted to a force that I could recognize. My Armoured Company and Infantry Company are a source of continuous joy as they blast, burn and crush my opponents. Even losing with them is fun, as they make who ever I'm fighting pay for the ground they take.

I got started back in 2nd edition myself. Got the Guard codex and started there. Always thinking about starting another army but for some reason can't make myself do it.

I like the idea of hundreds of models in an army. I really love the vehicles especially with the VDR rules. I mainly started this hobby just to collect and convert an army to however i saw fit.

I started IG because I was tired of the back and forth of marine games. I wated to get more of a feel of the 40k universe and all the Gaunts ghosts and Cyaphas Cane novels leads me to beleave that a las gun can kill just about anything. Nothing else out their appealed to me and with the IG doc points I could feel like an evil overlord just outside the imperium building an empire how I see fit. First up... non of this machine spirit crap. Its a gun, you aim it, you dont need to pray to it. Second I really liked the idea of pumping my troopers full of chemical goodness. I ended up developing a back story that I could really get into. So now I have an army that I can play in 40k that I feel is my own, is different from everyone elses, and provides me a challenge. Show of hands... how many people here came from marine armies before they went to IG. Same hands... how many of you learned the hard way in transition that you cant leave you men in the open (I suffered greatly my first two games as I would acctually advance on the enemy or move to cover via open ground. I lost a lot of men to laughter and bolter fire that way. Now I know better but it still makes me laugh looking back at how badly I lost and knowing why )

Started IG because I was homesick when I came to Turkey... so figured that Canadians were basic foot sloggers back in the WWs so why not make my stand here in Turkey with a nice big foot slogger force.. of which later turned into a specialized army full of Stormtroopers.. but hey.. whatever.. still got into it right?
And yes I used to play Chaos Marines.. still do.. and the transition was a bit to get used to indeed..
Cheers Gris

Imperial Guard was my first army in 40k, but not the first GW game i play(ed). I like the guard because they seem individual unlike space marines and they are not to over powered (ahmm NECRONS) and in most cercumstances a 1,000 point army of Guard can beat a 1500 point army (66.6% of the time) as I found out when I entered a 15,00 pt tourny with 1,000 pts

I used to play chaos in 2nd ed, and a bit into 3rd, but the constant influx of new codices kinda made me lose interest, so I jumped ship to gaurd.. I was well and truly sick of being outnumbered all the time, and loooved the idea of massed lasguns, mortars, artillery, snipers etc xD.
Also, when you get down to it, the Imperium is just about the most evil faction in WH40k.. Their all psychopathic zealots who hate EVERYONE and do nothing but strive hopelessley against all of the universe combined. And i LIKE evil.
Oh and there's NOTHING satisfying like slaying big bad models with a lucky guard sergeant or the like. Priceless.

Yeah, my friends are convinced that the imperium are the good guys but they are forgetting the massed purgings, racism, sexism, dogmatic views on faith and religon..........they're practically inter galactic nazis.

Totally! I dunno, they are even more evil then chaos in a way.. I mean chaos is basically just evil at its most base level, its instinctual and integral to chaos creatures, whereas the imperium DECIDED to be the way they are. Surely there's no reason why the empire couldn't Ally with at least the eldar and tau on a more permanent basis. No reason besides rabid xenophobia anyway :}
So really that's why I skipped to the imperium. It's where the REAL evil's at.

That is probably the purest statement that has held the most truth that i've heard this morning. Just don't tell the men, such is not adviced unless you should want to find yourself wanting on the field of battle.
