I prefer lascannons over missile launchers. armor 14 is all too common these days, and missile launchers can only glance vs. that. lascannons are the only weapon we've got for heavy weapon squads that have the ability to pen AV14 targets, and lets face it - if you want to kill a vehicle, literally 3/4 of the time (or more vs. targets that can be penetrated more easily) it is done with a penetrating hit.
I tend to keep all my heavy bolters in my infantry squads where all the lasguns and grenade launchers (which I tend to take alot of) can combine fire into something worthwhile.
other than a pair of lascannon heavy AT squads (yes, there's a missile launcher in one of the squads, but that's only cuz it is painted and I don't feel like making another lascannon crew so the missile launcher can collect dust), I like to use an autocannon fire support squad. 3x autocannons can seriously do some damage, and, having played as space marines lately, I can say that it's something that scares a rhino ALOT more than 3x lascannons. with autocannons you get the fire volume AND high strength that are needed to take out smoked light armored vehicles (read: transports).

My 2 cents.. though I dont use heavy weapons teams too much, but when I do its mostly Autocannons to take out transports, and MLs to take on mid sized tanks.. then I run up to the larger vehicles with my storm troopers with meltas to take them out nicely.. I just can't rely on the lascannon's 1 shot to be enough for me..

yes the one shot from the lasscannon is not really worthwhile

You could consider having a tank or 2 in your list. I just recently read a bit of fluff where part of a planetary defence force was rebelling and their armoured might was pounding an arbrites precint to rubble. It turned out the arbrites had a couple of tanks stored in one of the precint's outer buildings and they were to be used in a situation such as this. isnt that one of the books in the Ultramarines Omnibus? It was pretty good and i always enjoyed hereing the story of the those arbites more than those high and mighty smurfs.

I enjoy fielding a team of lascannons, very fun against killa cans and those pesky tanks.

a lascannon squad can be a great deterrent as well as 3 dice of death to light/medium armor (and occasionally heavy armor).
grisnik, I agree with you about meltaguns, but I have not figured out how to get them in range yet short of going with suicidal drop squads (which I have stormtroopers that occasionally do that). I've never done it in enough quantity to really have good effect however.

Suicidal drop demo charge squads are excellent for killing static armies.

except when the demo charge somehow scatters onto your own men. "throw the pin drop the grenade"

LoL, drop the grenade. Well, guardsmen are stupid that way. Hey look, our comrades...lets blow em up.

I tend to fight cityfight an awful lot, as my old army was a Light Infantry Bn from a hive world, so my heavy weapons tend to reflect that. Mortars mostly, with the odd heavy bolter for holding crossroads etc, but the moment they step out into the open, they tend to get eaten when their heavy weapons' shorter ranges let them down. My latest army comes from a wilderness world, and my guns are all the opposite. I used the VDR from WD258 to make an immobile 10/10/9 tank with a long-barreled lascannon, which are modeled onto 3 old 1:35 PaK40 chassis to make a sort of field gun. Basicaly, my heavy weapons choices depend entirely on the terrain and what models I happen to have built.

Cool, that sounds like a very, very cool conversion.

i saw in the begining of this thread that you are doing an arbite style army.Im my mind a city fight would/arbite army would do well with lots of heavy bolters since you are not going to get much range with all the buildings in the way.
I also believe in accuracy through volume. The guard doesn't hit all that well and the more dice you throw usually means the more you will hit.sharp shooters helps in this also.
I'm sure you will be playing against people that aren't rioters so you will need some heavy hitting units.you could take a few squads of vets and say they are like a swat team.give them 3 plasma guns ,a missile launcher and infiltrate them...it's pretty fluffy i think.
I also noticed you said you didn't like sentinels. In a city fight you can keep them in cover or close to it enough so they can do a great job.Fluff wise , to beat down a bunch of rioters i would use a catachan patern sentinal... the flamers are great against anything in cover and wound even space marines farily easily.yes they have a low survivability rate but so do all guardsmen.Use them for what they are for and you can't go wrong.
good luck on the army, arbites are a great theme
