Lets face it everyone needs two. For IG what do you take and why. Right now I am toying with two Inf Platoons, and despite the points its a lot of men and guns on the field. So far I feel much better about taking casualties.

Always go for at least two platoons with 35 men each and then perhaps grenadiers or armoured fist squads.

it really depends on what you are trying to accomplish with your army and your theme. If you are playing one of the themed armies from the 'dex like armageddon steel legion then you would go all armoured,if you're playing Talarins then you would probbably go all infantry. personally i like having alot of leeway with my armies so i have the ability to do almost anything i want with them.If i want a 35 man platoon, a 40 man conscript platoon and an armoured fist squad then i can do it
then again you could use the armoured company rules and use leman russes as troops.
i use 2 infantry platoons with 3 squads each on my drop infantry company. It is really fun to see the face of your oponent with all those troops dropping on the board at one time.
I know Knight doesn't like tanks at all and i respect that, and can see where he gets it.I do like to have a tank or two, and some times a mechanised army to play with,or some times i go all infantry and no tanks also.
so i guess it all boils down to what you want to do with your army.

I`ve got a 3 squad platoon and then a storm trooper armoured fist squad. I would have more men but I prefer painting tanks a lot more. I suppose it depends on the size of the army really. Mines 1500 points at the moment but if/when I expand the army I`ll have another platoon of 3 squads and have the storm troopers as an elite choice.

I agree with col. hengeist, it really depends on the situation.
if you want to be mean in a smaller point level game then take a minimum platoon and an armored fist then max out your heavy support.
if you know you'll be playing in heavy cover, then maybe 2x 25 man platoons to get you going.
if you know you'll be in light cover, then maybe 2x grenadier squads mounted in chimerae
if you want cheap above all else, then a 25 man platoon and a 20 man conscript platoon.
it totally depends on what you want to do with the rest of your list and what you anticipate encountering on the field.
