Hello all!
This is a guide covering a Vostroyan Imperial Guard Sergeant. The guide can be used for any other model of course, all you need to do is change the model and colors of course
Oh... its suppose to be Paint Guide and not Pain Guide I am to lazy to change it atm.
1. First thing to do is to clean the miniature from molds and other things that might be in the way. The better you clean up the miniature before painting, the better result you will get.
2. If you want to have something on the base, I recomend to base your miniature at this stage. I have here used my own basing mixture. A mixture of PVA glue, texture (something you add to paint when you want it thicker and with texture), gravel/sand, and some black paint. I mix all of these things together and get a black mixture that I add to my base once I have added some bits that I want on the base. In this case I have added some pink foam as rubble. I just took a thin pink foam sheet and broke some pieces of. I painted the pink foam with PVA glue since they melt if I use a spray on it.
3. Now when all is done with the base I shake my chaos black spray and coat the miniature. Once its dried, I look over the miniature once more and make sure the whole miniature is coated.
Before I go into the guide, some notes to add. It is very important to use thin layers, if the color doesnt cover the area properly, dont use more paint thus making it a thick layer. Let it dry and paint another thin layer on top of it. Some times it takes three even four layers to get the base coat good. I use GWs Foundation paint set, and thus this problem with coating is almost gone, as the foundation paints makes the layer almost perfect on the first layer.
High lights, when I do these I often use a glaze medium from Vallejo. This is to make it blend in better and not make the paint dry out as quick on my palette.
Drybrushing, I usually use more color on my brush than most when I drybrush, important to note if you do have more paint on, is not to rush the brushing as normal, but to stroke gently on the miniature with the brush.
Brush, I use a Da Vinci brush size 2 on almost everything. I even drybrush with it, but since I am not drybrushing hard as explained before its okey. I also use a GW small drybrush for the base and the furry hat.
1. Now begins the acctual painting. First of all I add all the base colors to the miniature. I make sure I leave some of the black still visible, to give the effect of a simple shade (black line). In my case here I have used Mechrite Red (GW Foundation) on the coat and lenses (thin normal layer), Calthan Brown (GW Foundation) on the boots, gloves, feather and bags (thin normal layer), Fenris Grey (GW Foundation) on the base (drybrushing), Charadon Granite (GW Foundation) on the fur hat (drybrushing), Brazen Brass (GW Citadel) on the metal areas (normal layer), Boltgun metal on the sword and pistol (normal layer), and Mordian Blue (GW Foundation) on the plasma pistol (drybushing). All of these base layers take about 20-25 minutes to add.
2. Now once all the base colors are on, I start high lighting. Some areas will get only one high light, others will get two or even three. Usually two is enough. For the red areas I use a mixture of Mechrite Red and Macharius Solar Orange (GW Foundation), and add some glaze Medium (Vallejo Game Colors) so it doesnt dry out as fast on my palette, and so it blends better on the miniature. Khemri Brown (GW Foundation) is mixed with glaze and added on the brown areas. Astronomican Grey (GW Foundation) is drybrushed onto the base and on the fur hat. Chainmail (GW Citadel) is used as a high light on the boltgun metal parts. Shining Gold (GW Citadel) is added with simple drybrushing on the brazen brass areas. Fenris Grey is drybrushed onto the plasma pistol. All these different high lights take about 10-15 minutes.
3. Here comes the final touches. Another layer of high lights on the red areas, this time with only Macharius Solar Orange together with glaze of course. The golden areas gets some chainmail added on some edges for a final highlight. The blue area on the pistol recives another drybrused layer of Dheneb Stone (GW Foundation), this color is also added to the feather. The feather is further painted with Mechrite Red to add some simple stripes. The base I now add a second color, and the first layer is Calthan brown, followed by Khemri brown and finaly Dheneb Stone. I intensionally drybrush so the two later colors go into the grey areas of the base too. This to make it blend in more softly. These last things take around 5-7 minutes to complete.
And this is all there is to it. Nothing super fancy, but a Table Top miniature ready for gaming (well atleast I think its table top, some dont think so).
I hope someone finds this guide useful.
