I've found that Grenade Launchers are wonderfully effective against Eldar. As they outrange most Eldar guns, a barrage of frag can really hurt a guardian line - while the krak grenades can sink warwalkers and cause instantkills on hero's.
I realise this is slightly unfluffy, but which special or heavy weapon do YOU think gives best pop for the buck against a specific enemy force?
Remember, this is about lowest price for best effectiveness against a specific army ... so think carefully!

Special-
Toss-up between Flamer/Melta and Grenade Launcher. For Infiltrators and Deep Strikers, Flamers and Meltas are where it's at. Grenade Launchers make the average Guardsman a threat against swarms and transports alike.
Heavy-
Missile Launchers are good all-round weapons. They can threaten any tank in the game, and they make a good swarm buster along with the 'nade Launcher. Mind you, you have to build your entire ARMY around Missile/Nade launcher squads, as you'll only get an average of three hits in a six turn game per launcher.
So you'll only get twelve total hits from the two required squads in a platoon. Use them wisely!
Combine these weapons with Sharpshooters for better aim.

-vs. nids: plasma rules all. u kill nidzilla armies, u kill the "obligatory" flying hive tyrant in most armies (even non-nidzilla). flamers don't cut it vs. nids, as they have close range and nids will have assaulted by then.will also not wound their important models easilly(genesteelers, warriors, tyrant, fex) heavy flamer in chimera is another story(!)
-vs. marines: plasma takes down predators/rhinos/ terminators, while rocket launcher insta-kills characters and destroys vehicles too.
-vs eldar: flamer(looool but true). against T3 armies flamer rules. and lascannons to force their vehicles to not shoot(destroying their vehicles is statistically 1/144, so go along with them not shooting.)

Not wanting to turn this in to another thread giving away my love affair with nade launchers (a quick search on my name will reveal several) but....... I do love nade launchers I catogorise specials in to 2 groups, basic and fancy. nades and flamers are basic, and go in to INF squads, and command squads (in large numbers, usually 4). specials I give to storm troopers to get the benefit of the increase BS and armour for the expected over heats. and also to make use of DS, especialyl effective on meltas for tank hunting. To the op, ur totally right, frags work wonders against t3 armies, any one getting out of a transport is going to get hit lots

I like to use meltas. I don't know why, but the idea of killing my own men seems moderately silly to me.... Plus nobody ever tries to rhino-rush a melta line.

Heavy bolters and Grenade launchers are great. They kill everything wonderfully, you can't fault them!

And the award for reading the question so far goes to: praetorean, for actually answering the question...
The "which gun is best" poll is around here somewhere ... otherwise lets get some qualification - which weapons have you found particularly useful against which army ...
"Come on guys ... insight and introspection, I wanna see some serious navel gazing here. We need results to turn newbies into seasoned guardsmen and kickback on the alien pondscum and superhumans who think we're a light breakfast. Move it people!!!"
... errr thank you Staff Sergeant ... *cough, nods, resigns*

Whats great against tau? At the moment im building a IG army and my mates building a tau army!
I would be thinking along the lines of a combination of nade launchers, m launchers and hvy bolters.

against tau infantry: flamers force them into taking more saves than they can handle due to t3. heavy bolters kill them good, while s4 blasts of missiles can also work.u can also get in cc against their infantry, u have them in cc they have 2 Wskill 2 init.u could also use a hellhound or a chimera(front 12, hide the sides, reach them and flame them to death)
against tau vehicles: in current rules u cant easilly destroy them but u CAN force them not to shoot. plasma guns, nad elaunchers, autocannons. meltaguns/lascannons would b good but u don't want to pay points to try and destroy them(which is nearly impossible due to them being skimmers) but get enough shots to glance so they dont shoot, shots that will also count vs, infantry, got it?
against tau battlesuits: plasmaguns and autocannons.

my favorite against the tau and don't burn me guys I am still not sure what you think of it... but snipers... lots of snipers dont take light infantry take carapace you then take special wep squads and BOOM throw in a rattling squad and you got a lot of snipers aiming down range and I got 22 snipers 12 of them are in special wep squads and boy do they make the elite choices fall rather cheap too when I work it all out £18 for a box of 20 guardsmen £24 for 2 box's of space marine scouts and a spot of blue green stuff and boom a bit of conversion later I had 12 snipers ready to go..... now they just need to get painted but 22 snipers is enough to even make abadon drop a brick when he feels all of them scopes on his face. so my verdict snipers in specal wepon squads cheap and will deliver the biscuits against infantry:)

Hmmmm, I never considered sniper teams as an anti-tau weapon... I always utilise autocannons (devilfish/Hammerhead/Inf killers) Heavy bolters (infantry killers) grenade launchers ( not bad, and assault 24") and the invarialbe meltagun.
On another note, the Griffon mortar wins the award for the single greatest anti-tau weapon of all time.

Griffon Mortar... How effective is it?
|
|
|
Post by Rolling Thunder on Apr 25, 2008 13:14:23 GMT -5
Let me put it this way-
Its indirect fire, so it can be hidden behind LOS-blocking terrain (and Tau have no indirect fire weapons)
Its min. rangeis only 12".
It's strength 6, AP4, which means it instant kills firewarriors (and the odd ethereal) on a 2+.
Its only about 75 points.
In short, a purpose-built eldar/ork/Tau/Nid swarm killer.
Also, using it in tandem with a super tooled-up veteran squad in the terrain in front of it works wonders.

lordcastellenjon I think i forgot to add that i have 5 ratling snipers in my army as well haha. But im moddeling normal sized guardsmen to use as im not fond on the ratling models.
Ive used scout snipers against other SMS and didnt find them all too effective, bit of a hit or miss each game really. But im deffinately going for some snipers in my IG.
My SMS vs my mates SMS... krak missiles!! By by Mr emperors champion, *devistators load up 4 krak misslies* Boom, splat! Do it to my mate all the time haha, and he always fails to screen him with some other squad.. just doesnt learn..

Yes, but hellhounds attract enemy fire like a giant red electromagnet with 'Shoot me' painted on the hull. Especially from tau, because tau HATE hellhounds.

best all round heavy weapon is the auto cannon, against anything its highish strength nails all but the toughest tanks, it shreds smurfs and there puny tanks(LR aside), blasts aspects, in to specks, and its reasonable rate of fire, gives most enemies cause to keep there massed hard boys out of the way, letting the flashlights deal with weaker inf, and best special weapon is the plasma gun, able to mess with pretty much anything on the table. its great on light Armour, and special characters,

Good grief... somebody hand me the tranquiliser gun, maister's over-exposed himself again.
1) What's ID? 2) missile launcher has two shot types, but not two shots per turn (for the noobs) 3) "and sw, demo kit on a insane person!" - eh? 4) "MUAHAHAHAHAHAHAHAHAHAHA...ad infinitum." Case closed.
Otherwise, thanks for the input ... er ... I think.

i love grenade launchers, they fire long range on the move i plan on trying a officer command with 4 grenade launchers running around as a mobile heavy bolter!!!!! with a extra strength autocannons are pretty good, but i think missile launchers are better, during a tournement, 1 random Infantry squad missile launcher targets a monolith, it hits with a 6, then glances with a 6, then the result is 6........it was even better when the lascannon killed the other monolith.........ive never seen so many necrons die in a explosion(or a necron player fail that many saves, then fail that many we'll be back's) i normally would say autocannon but recently missile launchers are being devastating in my army.........so.................

Denying saveing throws is the fastest way to shorten the odds. Missile Launchers outperform most ... and can kill 3+ models. It's overkill - but when you absolutely, positively have to kill every last SMurf in the room - take Missiles.
