Howdy, all.
I'm going to be using my Necron troops against my friend's Orks, and I need some help with tactics.
I've only ever used my Imperial Guard, and I've taken grievous losses for each and every victory.
I've never used a high-points, high toughness army before, so I'm afraid my usual tactic of hanging back and shooting until I pop out to claim the table quarters/table middle won't cut it.
Units available to me:
Necron Lord w/ Staff of Light, Destroyer Body, Phylactery, Res. Orb.
14 Necron Warriors
14 Necron Warriors
7 Scarab swarm bases.
Units available to my friend
Big Mek w/ Bosspole and Kustom Force Field
Big Mek w/ Shokk Attack Gun
~60 Shoota Boys w/ various upgrades
~60 Slugga Boys w/ various upgrades
Deff Dred
3 Killa Kans w/ 2 Rokkit Launchas and 1 Kustom Mega Blasta
4 Lootas and a Mek w/ a Kustom Mega Blasta
As my army adds up to around 810 pts, that will be the limit to the games for now.
What Necron tactics work against Orks? I have about thirty-forty dollars to blow on new units, so what should I get to supplement my army?

I've never fought necron, but reading some battle reports I can suggest the following:
o What's ork AP like? Kill anything holding a AP3 weapon. o Burners in close combat count as power weapons, orks with S4 and all their attack bonus will get you in close combat - avoid! o When you go out in the open "accidentally" leave 1-2 necron warriors behind a building. That way if your gang get massacred in the ensuing firefight you can still resurrect from the remainding 1-2 through the "I'll be back" rule. o Talk through the entire game like Arnie in Terminator "come with me in you want to live ... I'll be back ... I want you clothes, your boots and your motorcycle." And thereby infuriate your opponent while having lots of fun!
Good luck!

Right, your enemy will most likely field as many Boyz as possible and try to obliterate your men in a green tide. DON'T LET HIM. Use scarabs to tie up his men, have the warriors hang back and prang any vehicles/tough units with shooting before wiping his men out when they finally cut through your scarabs. If you feel like being adventurous, purchase some flayed ones and hit the boyz on the flank while your scarabs are tying his men up.
Most likely outcome is that you are going to suffer here- Orks are excellent at Necron-killing due to their high toughness, high Ld and choppa special rules.
Try and get something that can put out a lot of shots/attacks per turn.

The Choppa rule is gone, so I can still get my armor save. Yay!
The only thing I can think of that can get a lot of shots off per turn while still moving is Immortals. A group of ten can fire 20 S5 AP4 shots at 24" while moving, so they'd be good to run around his mobs, taking pot shots. Also, their toughness makes them marginally better in CC than my other units.
I've been looking through my Necron Codex, and I have to ask a few questions:
1. Do Tomb Spyders work as a CC unit, or are they just something the enemy runs around on their way to my warriors? 2. What about Wraiths? Are they useful at tying up or even slicing through Ork mobs? 3. Pariahs are the butt of many jokes by Nec players, but how useless/ful are they against Orks?

i have a decint sized NEC army and id have to say wraiths are a wonder at destractions and tying up enemy units, they suck against units that have high armor saves but tear orks to shreads , so if you use them use them to charge past normal units and attack there lootas. also scarabs swarms can have the same effect as wraiths at a much cheaper point cost as long as they dont get hit by a blast cause the vulerable to blast rule can hurt badly, and if your against any vehicle oriented army giving them disruption fields ive made my friend sweat bullets from seing them swarm an imoblized vehicle yep auto hit rolling 30 dice and counting the 6's, yet once i did this not one of those dice showed a single 6 ive desovered that tomb spiders are great distractions cause people fear them for some reason great bullet magnet ive never had the chance to actually fight with one though pariahs are awesome cause they count as having a power weapon and have the same gun as immortals also watch out for the phase out rule :S its a bugger when you have such few forces and as a sugestion if your looking to expand your nec army get destroyers they have works miracles for me. cause they can fire heavy weapons as assault weapons, move fire your 36" gun and count them dice rolling also flayed ones there the same amount of points as warriors but can deep strike , and have higher initiative than ork boys so they hit first also if they attack a unit they have to make a morale check and if the fail the enemy can only hit you on a 6 in CC

oh yah thats right mobs over 11 get fear less dont they :S forgot about that but the tactics I use against orks when i ever play them as NEC ( i usually play IG vs orks) 1500 points i go 2 monoliths with 2 squads of destroyers and the rest warriors for serious games with a lord with res orb with destroyer body with my destroyers, i always keep my squads of warriors , or destroyers with in 6" of each other so that they can use there will be back roll even if the whole squad is vaporized, and keep the monlith charging up the center cause hell have only a few weapons even Capable of even phasing the monlith.
most people like to field lots of warriors or different kinds of units but i trully try to field monoliths and destroyers, true its easier to phase out BUT i can hit my opponent faster and harder were it counts and few units even have a change at destroying a monolith if it moves 6" cause since its a skimmer it gets the only glancing rule making it vurtially impossible to kill. ive played close to 10 games as nec's and only lost 2 of them both VS nec players, and they used the same strategy against me i just got the unlucky rolls.

Perhaps I'll just plunk down $55 and get a Monolith. That'll scare him. 14-round armor, no bonuses to armor penetration, and he can't get rid of its main weapon with a 'weapons destroyed' result.
I've always wanted a slowly-moving, ponderous, nigh-indestructible Necron army as opposed to the fast ones composed of skimmers and Flayed/Scarabs.

Do that, and all he'll do is laugh as he forces a 'phase out' victory by killing all your warriors.

Well, I bought 10 Immortals. I'm gonna test them as one giant squad and as two 5-man squads to see their effectiveness.

I'd give advice too, but you probably had the game ~ a year ago, right?
