I would suggest shaving down all the rough edges and taking some green stuff, bulking up some parts and adding pockets to it. That would do the trick I think!

ok i'll give it a try sometime. Another question to add on top of this would be how can I make Schaffer's armor like that too

...Hmm...greenstuff, but Schaffer would be a tough time, I would just leave him alone...

AS others have said your greenstuff kung fu skills will be tested in the creation of the flak vest. I would probably shy away from the second pic paint scheme as it will tend to look too busy once it is completed. Dot painting usually does not translate well in such a scale as we are working.

Just as a thought, the flak jackets on the classic Cadians look an awful lot like the vests you're looking at. I could be wrong, but if you feel like it, I'd take a look at them, too
As for working with plastics, I'd have to agree with Commissar

tbh, I think using cadian armour and then removing most of it is prob a waste of time and effort. As you will still have the shoulder pads on the arms to deal with, which might look a little bit odd with the armour shaved down.
I deffo suggest that you consider using Catachans, at least for the arms, etc.... and poss mix cadian torsos with catachan arms or somthing like that. Works well, and is v easy to do. Won't be quite the effect ur after, but pretty close.
Or use just catachan bits and GS up the flak jackets.
Good luck with the project. I totally agree that doing that to Schaffer will be a massive head ache.

Fatuous is onto something. Cadian and Catachan models would blend well to make your japs, try it out, work with greenstuff and dont be afraid to try new modelling ideas. If you really wanted to though you could shave down the shoulder pads on the cadians, Im not sure how well that would look in the end though. Anywho. Good luck comrade.

I doubt that japs would have massive cadian arms commissar haha!
How many of these models do you want to do shugotenshi47? A whole army, or just a few?

Planning on doing a whole army worth of them. I shaved down the shoulder pads for a set of Cadian arms not sure how they look yet since I'm out of torsos but I'll probably get some more pretty soon

Mmaahahaaa, good point Tridman.
Well if you can shave down the shoulder pads it'd look good.

Personally I'd recommend against going too crazy conversion wise with the chests of the Cadians. The armor looks weird when you cut it, as its made of overlapping plates.

You could always go mini hunting and buy some 28mm scale soldiers and attatch lasguns and cadian bits.......

I would do this:
use cadian torsos and cadian arms, but then shave down the shoulder pad (it's gonna be a pain in the arse any way you do it, so, meh) and then you've got you jacket of cammo with sleeves. Or, you can check out the catachan bodies with jackets and vests. Those look sort of what you're trying to do.
Light infantry?
