Safron V.
A massive planet, covered entirely in a sprawling metropolis, a population in the billions. Crime and death rates rise, the military is the greatest occupation among the population. The cities buildings were aged, they had witnessed the deaths of countless people, genocidal invasions and massive civil wars between military sects. Non of these could compare to what was about to happen...
Deep in the southern core of the city a chaos drop pod landed, crashing into the city streets. A strange green smog drew from it, seeping into the surrounding buildings for miles until it finally whisped away into nothing. Anyone within the radius of the gas experienced horrific changes. Blood shot eyes, bleeding from the tear ducts and ears, you go wild with the desire to kill, you lose control, your vitals shut down but remain walking, seeking living flesh. The vile plague had already infected thousands, the goal of this was obviously not to kill us all in one fell swoop, but to cause such chaos, destruction, and confusion that we would kill eachother, slowly.

We recieved reports of major violence in the southern sectors of the city, massive riots and some reports of cannibalism en masse. The military was mobilized as the security and fire control had been federalized, we got orders to move out. My name is, Joel Peltz, I'm a sniper of the 112th Rifles division, the two other snipers in the squad are Faust and Lorien, Faust is a savlar who usually takes on any obviously suicidal decisions we need to make and Lorien is a quiet up-tight trooper. We were issued new Long-Las Rifles with extended magazines, along with these we were given a new set of carapace armour and some new auto-pistols. Our orders were to take up positions on the roof tops of the downtown buildings and cover the advancing troopers with other sniper squads. We grabbed our new rifles and left the barracks, the "battlefield" wasnt too far, we werent sure what we were to shoot at, we were just told to kill anything that could be a threat to the security of the soldiers and civilians. I dont think they even knew who to shoot at... We seperated, I took my position on a scaffolding along the side of a building, my comrades took spots on the other side of the street. We could hear the sudden crack of gunfire in the distance as it echoed down the streets. I attached my scope and looked down the street, blood covered people were running at the lines of gunmen in a frenzy, they seemed completely oblivious to their own impending death. Blood spattered about the armoured vehicles around them, the tanks opened fire upon the hordes of infected, bolter rounds tore holes in them, blasting off limbs and ripping them to shreds of flesh and splintered bone. ...

I adjusted my scope and wiped the lense, I took aim, finding my mark in the brain of an infected as it ran towards a lieutenant of the 161st. Faust and Lorien were shooting rapidly at them, round after round I could see the shots hitting the infected. They were fast, they raced down the streets non-stop into on going fire, they were relentless, I was amazed by how fast they ran. They roared and screamed, spurting blood whenever they opened their mouths, they seemed to be so crazed most had chewn off their own tongues... I took aim again, firing at an infected trooper, the las shot penetrated the steel helmet and left a large smoking hole, he dropped and was trampled by the horde of undead. I could see all hell had broken loose, the street was clogged with them, abandoned vehicles littered the streets as civilians barricaded themselves in their houses. The men below were trying to hold the line, they organized the close order drill and prepared for close combat, bayonets attached, they fired at the approaching horde, but for every one of them that was killed another five would take its place. More had come in from the sides of the streets, it seemed like a sea of relentless killing machines, they clashed, hundreds of guardsmen against thousands of these bastards. We fired at them, rapidly killing off dozens each, the battle raging below was vicious, the men stabbed, ripped and punched at them, they seemed just as terrifying as the infected themselves. They resorted to grenades, they flew through the crowds, killing many of them. My comlink rang. "Take up positions on the rooftops, get off the scaffolds." it clicked. I grabbed my rifle and slung it over my shoulder, jumping through the open window and into the hall I ran to the staircase and to the rooftop. I looked out over the embutment to Faust and Lorien... Lorien had slipped on the scaffolding, his rifle dropped into the hordes below, he was hanging onto the scaffolds end. Faust was too high up to reach him, Lorien was slipping... "I dont want to become one of them!" he shouted over the gun fire. He was barely hanging on, he reached for the four grenades on his belt, pulling one of their pins as he let go... He flew down, as soon as he hit the horde he exploded, a massive explosion engulfed dozens of them, sending blood, bone and gore everywhere along the building. Faust was mortified, he just stood there, looking over the edge at the crater in the ground that was once Lorien. "Faust?" I said over my comlink. "Yeah?" He replied... "Come on man, lets go." I said as he finally moved away from the window sill. I could see him on the rooftop, he was shouting at the infected below as he rattled off shots into them. Below, tanks of the fourth tank regiment rolled gloriously over them as they made their way down the street. The battle cannons echoed through the streets as they tore massive holes into the horde, the sound was music to our ears. They worked like battle drums, the men faught harder down below, it was tooth and nail, quiet literally, the crimson splattered buildings towered over them, the fighting was furious. I took a look over the small balcony, I looked down the street using my scope to scout the surroundings...they spread across the street, end to end as far as the eye could see... The few hundred tanks heading their way were already having trouble with their current opponents... The infected jumped atop the tanks and scratched at the tanks hulls until their nails broke off, leaving smeared blood marks... Many tanks had become immobilized from all the bone and flesh clogging up the treads, this made them an easy prey as the infected finally figure out how to open the hatches. Heavy barricades further behind the main lines prevented any of the infected from reaching the main chain of command. Finally air support had arrived, bombers flew through the skies, dropping incendiary bombs onto the crowds below, burning them up into growling, charred mis-shapen forms. Valkaries made sweeping passes over them as well, locking on missiles and blasting holes into the hordes. I could feel the heat of the blasts below... Many of the apartments and buildings around us had been evacuated, their inhabitants sent to new residence in the further echelions of the city. The sun was setting, soon it would be dark...ominous... Faust was still pent up with rage as he pelted off shots into them. "Conserve your ammo buddy, we gotta stay up here for who knows how long!" I said over the comlink. "I guess your right, I might need these later..." He replied, putting his rifle down. Finally the sun had set, the darkness swallowed us all up, the street lights flicked on, giving the infected a creepy glow to their rotting flesh as they ran down the street... I threw my pancho over and layed down, taking aim at them once more. Taking pot shots at them...when suddenly...a sound, thrashing and screaming, no, not human screams...it was the infected...below...at the staircase...

"I need pick up!" I said over my comlink. "We'll be there in a few minutes..." The voice on the other end replied..."Hang on..." I could hear them running up the stairs, I set my rifle to rapid fire and took aim at the doorway, the nightvision on the scope allowed me to see them clearly. High powered bursts from the las rifles obliterated their heads as they run forward, more were coming... "Faust, I need support!" I called over. He started firing at them, killing many that I had missed. Blood sprayed over the rooftop, finally they stopped for a minute, just enough time to lock the door. I ran over to the large steel gate, slammed it and jammed one of their arms in between the handles. They rattled at the gates, throwing up stomache acid and blood as they snarled at me. A gunship finally stopped by on the side of the roof, I leapt aboard, Faust was sitting there on the bench, rifle clutched in his hands, I took a seat. "You'll be stationed at the HQ" The officer said, pointing to the location on a holomap. "Alright, but isnt the fighting further up?" "No, they've breached the main lines, now its up to you to keep General Topp alive." I nodded and the valkarie spun around towards the HQ. After a short trip the ship set down and we walked onto the Command Post, a gorgon transport with extra communications and stubbers every few feet. I took up a position on the corner, opposite of me was faust, in the center, General Topp stood with his staff. The general was a veteran of many wars, he had a signature weapon, it was a custom built hand cannon, a hand held grenade launcher, he also brought with him a storm bolter and dual las pistols. No close combat weapons, he didnt even wear the massive dress uniforms most generals would don, he just had the same fatigues as the rest of his troops, he wore carapace, as did most of the men under his command. The commissar next to him was sitting on the edge next to the vox boxes and the signals officers as they read out artillery positions to the main HQ. We could see the endless droves of undead running towards our position, they were just a few hundred feet away... All of a sudden, we heard a massive boom as hundreds of artillery guns behind the lines opened fire them, we could see nothing but huge explosions tearing apart the street, bodies flew through the air, scattering blood and body parts through the streets. Shelled out building sent shards of glass flying through the air, rubble strewn through the streets. When the smoke and dust finally cleared we could see massive craters dotting the streets ahead of us... "Move out!" The general shouted to the remaining men under his command, only a few hundred of us remained. "Wait, what happened to that tank regiment we saw earlier?" I asked faust. "Oh god..." He replied as we jumped down with the rest of the troopers and began walking down the street. The massive shell holes slowed us down as we made our way through them and the debris of the fallen buildings. We made it to the end of the street, the burnt out skeletons of tanks could be seen as far as the eye could see, they had obviously been caught in the barrage... "Hello? is anybody alive out there?" On of the officers shouted. We heard movement in the surrounding area... Suddenly heads poked up from the rubble, their eyes were crimson red, their faces a pale grey... We were surrounded by them, they were everywhere. "Form up..." The officer shouted. We all got into the large circle around a crater, rifles ready, bayonets attached... We opened fire on them as they approached, we dropped about a hundred of them before we were overwhelmed... Everyone ran back to the command post as quick as possible. Men slipped and fell into the craters, they could climb out fast enough and were torn apart by the ravaging hordes behind us. I slipped on a piece of scrap metal, dropping my rifle, it slid into a deep crater... "Damn it..." I mumbled as I got up and ran forward, the men around me were frantic, they were scared...who could blame them? The gorgon was in sight, but so were hundreds of those things right behind us... Without warning the stubbers mounted on the Command post opened fire on us, cutting down the last soldiers that remained... "No mercy for traitors and cowards!" The speakers on the gorgon said as the stubbers rang. I took cover behind a fallen pillar, I looked out onto the field, my comrades were dying at the hands of their own officers, this was madness. I looked about the field for Faust, he was running for cover when a stubber ripped into him, spraying him on the wall... "Oh god..." I said, sneaking into the building beside me. The tile floor was slick with blood. I stood up and ran for my life up the stairs, the place seemed quiet enough, I was ready to kill anything that approached me... After walking down a hall I came to a room, I kicked open the door, the window was blown out, there was a small cot on the floor, I checked the bathroom, nobody, nobody in the closet either, it was clean. I shut the door and barricaded it with a large piece of fallen stone and locked it. I holstered my gun and lay down on the cot.

I awoke several hours later to the sound of footsteps running down the halls outside my room... I sprung to my feet, half asleep, I drew my pistol. There was a pounding at the door... "Who the hell is there?" I shouted. "Sergeant Redford of the 263rd!" a voice replied from the outside. I moved the concrete block out of the way and opened the busted door. I shook hands with the sergeant. "Joel..." I said. "We're taking back this sector." He replied, pointing down the hall at some troopers shooting apart an infected as it ran towards them. "Oh...well, I need a rifle." I said, pointing at my snipers badge on my arm. "They're all over the place, dont know if theres any with a suitable scope around here but you can try." he said. I walked down the hall in search of a suitable gun. The place was riddled with bullets, shells littered the floor, dried blood on the walls formed a gross brown.

I came to a suite, inside a group of people had commited suicide, the stench was unreal. I search around the room and pried a rifle from a fallen comrade. Quickly I put on my rebreather and walked from the room, the apparatus made the stench easier to take, I came to a window, I looked outside at the body ridden field, I could see what was left of Faust, the gorgon command post had been over run, it lay still and silent, spattered with blood and layden with empty bullet shells from the many stubbers. The General had obviously been killed in the assault, I could see his corpse laying there against the command systems, his grenade launcher still cluched in his hand.

I walked outside the room, looked down the hall... The troopers had left, but I could hear gunfire from below, I walked down the stairs, the rails were smeared with blood, corpses lay against the wall, puss from thier wounds oozed out. Bloody hand prints against the walls and on the stairs. Organs and limbs lay everywhere here, an eyeball was looking up at my from the ground, its owner was no where to be found. I kept going until I reached the main floor, the streets were quiet around here, the gunfire was farther away. But you must remain cautious, those beasts turn up everywhere. The crater laden streets, half buried corpses and weapons. I walked through this, some of those split apart limbless torso's with heads growled and chomped at me as I passed by, the dirt was discoloured and red from the blood of hundreds, if not thousands of dead civilians and troopers. At the end of the street I could see the skeletons of the burnt out tanks from the armoured regiment that was on its way to stamp out the infection in the east. I needed to find a command post. Suddenly I heard a moan coming from the building across from me...

I drew my rifle and fired in the direction the sound had come from. Nothing... "Hold your fire!" A weak and shrouded voice said from the ruins, somebody was alive. I ran over to the demolished house and looked over the ruins, there was a wounded trooper, he had been bitten. "Those bastards bite hard, heh." He said with a grin. He had stopped the bleeding with a med pack and cleaned the area of the wound, although he had not lost that much blood, he was looking extremely pale and was sweating profusely. This did not look well. Then I noticed his vox pack, a small, low range vox box. "Can you pick up a signal?" I asked. "Not clearly, maybe if we got to the roof we could call upon one of the airships." I sat down across from him, we could hear foot steps coming from the level above us. Then growling and snarling. I readied my rifle and took aim at the staircase when we heard foot steps.
