Right, so I was asked how I paint my minis and though; Why not make a painting guide!
I have currently refined my painting technique, which I think is a vast improvement on the other stuff Ive done so far. This can be seen here; commissar.proboards22.com/index.cgi?board=picpost&action=display&thread=3646
Anyway, here's a tutorial on how to paint my scheme!
For those of you that couldn't give a %&*$, the camo bit starts at Step Six
Paints
The paints I used for this tutorial are as follows;
Chaos Black (Spray and Paint)
Codex Grey
Fortress Grey
Badab Black (Wash)
Skull White
Blood Red
Blazing Orange
Fiery Orange
Dark Angels Green
Snot Green
Bad Moon Yellow
Boltgun Metal
Most of these paints have been slightly thinned in the pot by adding a couple of drops of water. I find this thins the paint slightly, making it easier to use yet not too runny so it requires more than one coat
The Greys are the primary colours I use for the clothing and armour. If painting this scheme 'to gaming standard', you could probably only use these colours . The Greens and Oranges are there for fancy-ass detail only, and if you can't be bothered with the fancy bits then don't!
Brushes
The brushes I used are as follows;
Citadel Large Brush
Citadel Standard Brush
Citadel Detail Brush
Miscellaneous 'Big Fat Brush'
The Model
The model I painted in this was made entirely from Forgeworld Cadian parts. The torso and the head are from the Cadian Upgrade Pack. The legs were left over from the Cadians with Special Weapons pack. I chose these parts becausse;
A) They have lots of areas to paint with lovely camo
B) They look cool as hell ;D
The Tutorial
Step One
Using the Chaos Black spray, spray the assembled mini from around 12" (30cm) away. This should leave a fine, even coat. If it doesn't let the coat dry before you put another on, as the paint can get a bit too thick and obscure detail. Needless to say it needs coating from all sides
When it's done it'll look something like this:
Yep, he looks cool already! If you want any sergeant torsos, PM me and when I get a spare I'll arrange a swap with you I don't want to over-use these you see (I've got two already!)
Step Two
Take out your miscellaneous 'Big Fat Brush' and give Sgt.Wotsizface a nice even coat of Codex Grey. Don't put it on too thick (very tempting when doing an all-over colour) as it will clog the detail and spoil the next step. Let this coat dry
Step Three
Take out your Citadel Large Brush and give the cloth areas (Legs, arms, back of neck) an even coat of the Badab Black Wash. Not too thick, because it'll look crap
Step Four
Again using the Citadel Large Brush, give your sergeant another coat of the Badab Black Wash, over the top of the first one. Lovely!
Step Five
Using the Citadel Standard Brush, pick out the raised areas of the cloth with Codex Grey. Now the magic happens, and you should be left with some surprisingly awesome shading. Let me tell you, this is a hell of a lot easier and better looking than spending hours shading the cloth with Chaos Black and a Fine brush (see the first pics from my 'new guys new stuff' thread for examples )
Step Six: Camo Time!!
On my Sergeant, he has a little skull detail, and I also added some battle damage to give him a bit of character. Ignore these bits, which are black in the picture.
Your shoulder pads should still have a nice even coat of codex grey on them, if you were careful with your washing, and will look a bit like the pic below;
Take out your Citadel Detail Brush and your Fortress Grey. Now add some camo detail. This camo be in stripes, squares or splodges, depending on the kind of camo style you want to create. I tend to go for a mix of all three As you can see, I have also added camo patterning to all the other armour and the helmet. if he had a lasgun, plasma gun, or any other gun, I'd stick some on there too.
Step Seven
Now here's the (slightly) tricky bit. a darker colour is needed to add to the camo. You could use black, although I think it's too dark, so I use a 50/50 mix of Chaos Black and Codex Grey. It should look a bit like the blob in the photo. The area around it is Codex Grey, so you can get a comparison of what it's like.
Now for adding the darker camo. Camo works by breaking up the outline of an object, by confusing the eye. The best way of doing this is to slightly overlap the colours; if the colours are next to eachother, it doesn't work as well.
I do this by adding stripes and triangles that 'cut' into, and through, the Codex Grey and Fortress Grey areas. It is an entirely random process, and Im sure with practice the effect will get better and better.
If there's some bits that don't intersect, paint a block/blob/stripe/triangle of Fortress Grey over the top. This will stop your sergeant being picked out, in this case by Gargoyles and Flying Hive Tyrants.
Step Eight: Lenses/Buttons/General Shiny Bits
Remember that fancy-ass bit I was on about? Well this is it. If, unlike me, you can't be bothered buying alternate heads for your troopers, or painting details such as lenses, leave now, because you will be bored.
Take your Blood Red, Dark Angels Green and Citadel Detail Brush, and add them where you want your red/orange or green bits. I went for the orange lenses look, with a red button and two green ones. Now my sargeant looked like this;
If by now you're proper hungry, bang on some potatoe waffles.
Step Nine
As your potatoe waffles slowly cook, take your Blazing Orange and Snot Green and paint over 2/3 of the area you coloured in the Red or Green. This should brighten the look of your buttons/lenses considerably.
Step Ten
As with the last step, layer Fiery Orange over 1/2 of the Blazing Orange (thats around 1/3 of your total lense).
With the Snot Green, mix it in a 50/50 ratio with the Bad Moon Yellow (see the lighter blob in the Pic below) and paint it over the Snot Green bit, covering 1/2 of the patch and 1/3 of the total lense.
Now the Sergeant looks like this;
Add some Vegetable Fingers to the waffles;
Step Eleven
Now for a fiddly bit. Making sure the bristles of your trusty Citadel Detail Brush for a nice point, apply a tiny dot of Skull White into the lightest corner of your lense/button. if you want to get really fancy, add some light reflection bits too, which I represent with a couple of white lines. Now your buttons/lenses will look cool. Don't show your girlfriend though, she won't be impressed, trust me.
And put your peas on when you check on your waffles;
Step Twelve
Now your sergeant is looking good, and there's a few more touches to add before his finished. Clutching your faithful Citadel Detail Brush, carefully paint all those little details that need to be metal. In the case of my sergeant, that's the shoulder detals, helmet eagle, breastplate eagle, pistol holster eagle, pistol bit and the 'button' near his helmet, as well as some little details on his boots and backpack.
By now, this guy is pretty much done. I've done most of my troopers to this standard, and they look pretty damn cool. THe only thing that can be added is highlights, which I'll do after eating my well deserved feast;
And after thinking about the rude things I could do to these generic-looking girldband types appearing on This Morning while I fill my face;
