Just wondering how you would make a boltgun?
I was thinking of making the basic shape out of wood, then putting the body work over the top of the wood, and making the body work out of plasticard, then adding all the details like fire selector and safety.
Any thourghts?
I'm thinking of using a bolt gun because I'm planning on making a basaliskian sergents uniform and the bolt pistol looked a bit weedy in comparison.

Id make it out of plasticard on foam, then it'd be very light and very cheap. Id stay away from wood because carving it and sealing it before painting would be a pain in the arse. That's my 2 pence anyway

3ff3ct : foam....arrrglll...I don´t like it to handle weapons with the weight of an barbie puppet ;D......... without function the weapon must give me the feeling to handle an real WEAPON not a toy... And it looks not very realistic , handling an bolt pistol made of foam with an weight of 0,5Kgs . My steel one weights near 3 Kgs and an posing one handed firing looks very real..hehehe..because this posing is very short.. Greets Watts

But there is another idea, you see the black parts on my bolter pics( without the muzzle). If you do this parts by an massive block of plastic(like PVC) you will have an good weight of the weapon and it is very stable, then attaching an ankled sheet of steel for the green part of the bolter( you can fix it with screws directly in the pvc). Its many work for drill, saw and file but I think you can do this at home. Greets Watts

go for wood dude its got the weight, its easy to get hold of, cheap, easy to work with and no its not hard to seal. then you can use some acrylic (its thick plastic sheet 3mm or thicker) to add detail (if you can get and cut the thick gage steel sheet then use it), a drill would help in carving details e.g. the cartridge exit slit (lol i cant recall what its called right now). PVC pipe can be used as the barrel (again cheap). last of all the magazine, i would make it out of sheet metal (not to thin!) and painted dowel or PVC pipe for the bullets (if you want them shown)
well thats how i would go about making it, im sure you would find more problems and solutions as you get along making it lol post pics when your done eh

ltericwatts: You definately know what youre doing, i only suggested plasticard because im cheap and lazy Judging by the comments Id say now that the acrylic sheeting would be the easiest, cheapest and less crappy than plasticard, although if you want it to look as good as what ltericwatts has done, follow his advise

plastic is the way i went, i added strips of lead weight inside it to give it the heavy feel. much easier to fix mistakes with than wood, and easier to work with than metal. have you had a look at my www.bolter.blog.com site? or checked the thread i made my bolt pistol in? if you extend the back and lengthen the front housing of my version, you should have a good bolter size. i made my bolt pistol(s) pretty hefty just due to the 40k size of things

ltericwatts i agree its good to see how others go about making well anything if you can use metal then go ahead it will still work out the same. if you are not very confident to use the materials, don't have the tools or dont want to scrounge for them then don't. asses what you have and use that it hopefully should still work out. now if i were to go to town making one a scale gun id use a all i could! id mill out the detail in aluminum, turn a nice barrel out of steel, wooden stock thats nicely stained and blue all the metal id think needs it! but alas i dont have a miller or lathe and no time im curious how detailed do you want to make yours? ..........ok ltericwatts um i just saw your other posts on the scale gear so i thought for the best i should modify this post in acknowledgment ...........you REALLY know what your doing i hats off to you and we are all better off with your guidance .........hint hint to all listen to ltericwatts!

@staghound: Wait a moment, I´m not god.. I´m only an militant metalworker , loving his profession and a hobby workholic.... I think not sooo much people can it do in this way because of the tools.....but if I can help , it will be a great pleasure for me.... kommissar´s weapon is very well done and in an possible way for nearly everyone ( the only thing on the weapon, looks not so good is the big muzzle hole.....the bolter shell have no barrel to guide and slide out ) @all: I´m looking happily forward to see many pics from imperial guardsmen in real in the next year on this board... ;D greets Watts

but he doesn't wear jackboots i agree with ltericwatts on the barrel issue, the whole reason rifles have a barrel that fits so snug is to improve accuracy, its rifled, (thus the name rifle) so that you it rotates and hits its target, if it didn't have the snug fit, then it would just go off any any old angle really.

i must agree to it would look a bit weird to have such small shells in a overly large barrel but remember the ones on the mins are overly large to and if it were a REAL gun then the caliber would well you wouldn't be holding it and firing it with one hand ...............or even holding it with one hand! let alone firing it with 2 hands!! ..............i think we can all agree a large barrel is better than an "in scale" sized barrel ok here in Australia we dont do any of this stuff (well not that i know of) and id only heard of people dressing up like this for games day is this a new thing thats coming around the world? they should add another topic for it here on the board

Basaliskian: But do´nt put me on an altar with two candles side by side...................I´m only an little grunt, fighting for the emperor...and doing my best for the mankind.... staghound27 : I think you can fire this weapon with one hand, because I´ve read an discription there is an part to reduce the hit backwards. And, the bolter shell is´nt so hard filled, because the loading is only to throw the projectile an short distance in front of the weapon( thats the reason why they use NOT caseless ammunition) ..then there is the ignition of the rocket propelled loading for the long distance to the target. I talk a long time to the guys of the gamesday judges about weapons...there are many rolling eyes about my questions.... ;D Greets Watts

lol i didnt know how a boltgun worked i knew they had smart tips to minimize damage when not wanted. ok its cool go for the big barrel oh oh i just had the thought you know that new SM scout Sargent special character guy, his bolter would look very cool with the scope and suppressor or the normal SM scout bolt pistols with suppressor. think about
