Compensating for something? I wanted him to look like a frontline officer, a leader of men confidently leading his men into the mouth of hell. Initially I was doing the armour in white (like the white armour worn by the emperor at the end of Gladiator), but that didn't work at all, and so I figured that I'd simply paint him in the colours of my grunts. IMO I didn't do a top job on the painting unfortunately, tried to remedy it with an extra layer of highlights all round, with some success, but alas... oh well, I'm still pretty satisfied with him. Will probably go over the metallics again, but apart from that I consider him done. Just gotta finish the fancy base I've made for him - probably tomorrow. Watch this space And in case anyone wants to know (to nick that wonderful lion helmet, perhaps?), he's made from Cadian Shock Infantry and Empire General parts.

I really like the model, and the paint job is superb. The only comments I have is that the sword is a bit too big for him and the base should be round (it is 40K after all... )

I don't know, Bobhat...I think the claymor looks epicly heroic for such a tiny guardsman (we are tiny, afterall!) and yes, the base should be round. I also think he should have a bolt pistol rather than a musket...just my opinion, that if you've got hundreds of angry and hungry termigaunts charging at you, it helps to have an autoloading weapon in yer hands...meh!

I love the gun actually, but I do agree that he should be put on a round base.

Of course he'll get a round base, I just glued him to the nearest one (which happened to be a square) for the painting, as I do the real bases seperately (Polyfilla and drybrushing are two things you want to keep your painted minis very, very far away from).
I had a feeling that there would be divided opinions on the weapons, but I like them myself, they add character IMO. Also, I don't think they'll look quite as big when he goes on the real base... there'll be pics up tonight with a bit of luck, then you can judge for yourself.

Wow! Thats a great looking officer! I personally love the musket-style shooter and the massive sword, it goes nicely with the idea of some worlds being 'in the past' as opposed to highly developed and futuristic. That and they just look cool And I think your paintjob is more than satisfactory.

No, Polyfilla (in my case Prestolit) and drybrushing go closely together as I'm making and drybrushing mud. I'd say its depending on what you're doing there. For some minis its good to be close to it, for others its good to stay far away from it...

What I meant was that you shouldn't glue painted minis to their bases before you're done playing with the polyfilla and drybrush I use both too, and love the results. Speaking of... And a size comparison - the big weapons fit nicely after all, I think! FYI, after taking the shot, I noticed that his armour turned out rather light compared to that of his companions, so I just darkened it a bit with some very watered down black ink and touched up on the highlights. Bobahat, small world, I live in Aarhus too. If you're up for it, I'd love a game when I get a few more squads painted. I've never played 40K in my life but I've got a pretty good understanding of the rules (apart from the 'no muskets' thing, that particular bit I'm a tad fuzzy on) and I'll be fielding a fully converted & painted army, so at least it'll look good. I'm 22 btw. Get back to me if you're interested.

ah it all makes sense now, I love it.
the weapons don't look too big and that pistol looks like it'll shoot at R12 S3 AP- assault1 to me.

i kind of like the brighter armour...it makes him look more like an officer who has just arrived on the front lines, and hasn't seen the roughest of the fighting quite yet. i like it, and think u should keep it, IMO

Thanks for the kind words all! 3ff3ct, right you are about the skellie. aeonian, too late, already darknened it. Not sure if it's an improvement or not ... makes him fit in better with the grunts at least, which was kinda what I was going for with this guy. mitchell93, it's from the empire general kit (it could easily be dwarven anyway, though).

part of the bretonnian men-at-arms kit. Just be aware that they come with half of the bearer's left arm attached to them (up to the elbow), and the scale of these particular minis is somewhat small, so unless you use the original bodies (like Ive done) you will probably need to do a bit of work on them.
