Hi guys, Im wondering if anyone could give me any tips as to the designing and production of a good standard, as I feel one would add a bit of character to my army and generally look cool as hell ;D How have you made your standards? What worked and what didn't? Id like to know please! Thanks in advance Ps Any suggestions as to what I should put on my standard?

Hey bro, For my standard, I got a piece of cloth, then I drew on it with a thin black sharpie until I got the design that I wanted, using stenciles where necessary. Then, using my extrordinary painting skills (which you have too!) I painted in the thick lines with my regimental colours.
That's the only way I can think of doing it, and then just attach it to a long bit for your standard bearer. Plus, it's an actual flag, not just some piece of plastic. There's also got to be some way you can harden it so it stays proped up like it's flowing in the wind, but I haven't done that.

Oh, and as to what you should put on your standard, these are the absolutley, positively, completely necessary things:
Imperial Eagle/Aquila (all praise the Immortal Emperor of Mankind!!!) In one corner, your regiment number in roman numerals In another corner, your company number in roman numerals In yet another corner, name of the planet And in the final corner, the type of regiment they are (i.e.: rangers, air cav, armoured cav, heavy infantry, shock troops, artillery regiment, etcetera.)
Then, the optional things are: plenty of skulls and purity seals your own personal regimental symbol Lots of little boxes filled with text, basically recording their major victoires. put a few burned holes in here and there, and you'll be good 2 go!

to make it stiff, before you paint it, soak it in PVA glue, and shape it and attach it to its place. I made one a while ago out of Paper. Paper works good too but I am sure Cloth would give it good texture.

Very helpful! Thanks guys! I'm not sure about the 'regimental symbol' though, I have no idea what to make for it

For your regiment? I would say a Plasma gun.... I actually just took one of the transfers off the Space Wolves decal sheet and used that. It looks more like a Lion then a wolf, and I think it adds a nice touch.

Another handy tip for standards is using an old toothpaste tube. Once you're finished with it, cut it open, rinse it out, and you have a nice, malleable (and paintable) surface for your banners and standards.
Give it a shot!

Crossed plasmaguns, like crossed swords.... I think I'll have to have a doodle tomorrow. Ymmot: Thats a good idea, and a very simple one too!

Here's my initial sketch. I apologise for the crappyness, I have no good pecils, rubbers or even a ruler! And the paper was crap too! Not a very good standing for a fine artist..... Anyway: Please give me suggestions/comments!

Nice picture. I think that you should maybe base the imperial eagle off the german imperial eagle (since warhammer kinda stole it from them ... lol) just a couple of pics that might help:

Dude...it doesn't matter where they stole it from: this is warhammer, and we're Imperial Guardsmen here, so we use the Imperial Eagle symbol, not the nazi symbol. Just sayin'...

no no, im just saying, he could use those if he wants as a refence. Nobody really needs to listen to my advice. I was just saying that he could use it he can. Sorry if you took it in the wrong way. Also then: The other thing is that it is HIS/HER design. They could use what ever they feel like. I am just trying to give ideas. Daniel

HIS, thankyou very much I do have a girls name, doesnt mean you can confuse my gender or anything! ;D (Its Jordan btw) ^ Thats the image I used for making the standard! Do you think my design is missing something? I was thinking perhaps some laurels around the plasma guns, or another banner above the aquila. Any ideas how to add 'past battle' info too? @aeonian: Glad you like it! I think it needs some refinement though, IMO it's a long way from done

Jorden is not a girls name. There happens to be girls called Jorden (like the singer) but their parents were drunk when they named them.

a way to harden the cloth flag might be to soak it in watered down pva glue?

Wow, I was just kidding about the Plasma guns, but it looks excellent. I can't wait to see it in "tabletop" size!

I think it'll look better when its reduced, and when I've drawn it properly and coloured it

what colours its going to be?
also, you may want to do something to the background.
To use heraldric terms, the background is a field. And currently it is plain, may I suggest having one of these devices for a background. an Ordinarie. This is a simple, two colour type of heraldry, with a field, and lines running across in a certain way. they are: fess(a single horizontal line, about half of the way up), bend (a diagonal line going down from left to right, splitting it in half), saltire (an 'x' splitting the field into four pieces), pile (a triangle coming down from the top of the field to about halfway), bars (two horizontal lines, in the middle, with a small gap seperating them), pallets (two vertical lines, in the middle, with a small gap seperating them), bendlets (two diagonal lines going down from left to right, with a small gap seperating them), chevronels (two chevrons, one going from the middle almost reaching the top, one from about a fith up going just over half way, with a small gap between the two).
or you could have a simple division of the field which is a multi-colour pattern, split by a thin black line the most common are: party per fess (a division of two halfs by a horizontal line) party per pale (a division of two halfs by a vertical line) party per bend (a division of two halfs by a horizontal line going down from left to right) party per bend sinister (a division of two halfs by a horizontal line going down from right to left) party per saltire (a division of four quarters in an 'x' shape) party per cross (a division of four quarters in an upright cross) party per chevron ( a division of two halfs by a chevron starting from about a third up till just over a half) party per pall (a division of three thirds by three lines, two forming a triangle with the top going till just under half-way, and a third, vertical line meeting the vertex of the triangle)
the eagle is the charge which is the foreground image.
the most common colours are: Or: Gold Argent: White Azure: Blue Gules: Red Purpure: Purple Sable: Black Vert: Green
hope this helps
