Someone mentioned the idea of a drop trooper stuck in a tree a while back, and I've decided to build on that. My idea is to have a trooper with his parachute stuck in a tree (my drop regiment can't get their hands on fancy gravchutes) and use that as an objective marker.
I have the trooper ready, and I have a tree. My question is, what should I make the actual parachute out of?
Any thoughts?

Paper mache(sp?) might work. Just rig the trooper into the tree without a chute, then cute out a round circle, drape it, and shape it.
Just an idea, don't know if it will work.

Most likely it won't work. Best guess would be using cloth. Some finer cloth, cut out into the form of the desired parachute. Well and how to place it in the tree won't be a problem as well as the chute will do that itself

Yeah, hanging it from the tree and attaching it to the model won't be a problem, just the material of the chute.
Fine cloth would work, but I have no idea exactly what I'm looking for. Maybe I could find an old dress shirt and use that. The only other option I can think of would be what someone suggested in the Banner thread, and cut up a toothpaste tube to use. It wouldn't be as good as real cloth, but it would be sturdy.

1. a worn out piece of cloth 2. tissue paper (be careful with handling) 3.wax paper 4. a plastic bag 5. standard paper

You just gonna cut a circle or make individual triangles and then sew/glue/whatever them together? I think that'll look much more realistic. Tbh Im suprised the guy made it as far as a tree with just a parachute, especially in the 41 millenium

If you can get your hands on silk, go with that. It will be very realistic. That is what parachutes where made out of in WWII. I agree with Serar, you will need to put seams on it to make it look right. Don't forget about the Risers and suspension lines. If you want more info on parachutes I will email you what I have on hand.

I'll try that out tomorrow and see how it goes telecustom: Silk is a bit tricky for me to get my hands on. Maybe if I chop up an old tie. As for risers, suspenion lines, and the reserve chute, I've got pictures and diagrams, but thanks for the offer! ;D

A thin metal foil might work, but painting it would be hard.

ok how do you want the parachute to be like, all draped over the tree? or what i was thinking when i first read it, stuck in one branch and the chute is mostly draped down?

How about trying to use tissues (or cheap paper hand towels) and putting into a diluted pva then take it out and shape it to the tree? I have done this techinque to make bags and blankets in the past and it works pretty well . After that cut it up into triangles or the designated shape then glue back together (after culting the sides in a bit). I hope this opinion does help Daniel

i tried silk, its nice, but its pricey off cuts from fabric stores? it's not like you need big sheets. or hit up a thrift store and find a white silk blouse for like a few dollars

Any way that works, although my original thought was having it draped over part of the tree. Also, I don't want to have it too tangled, because I want to be able to remove him and just use the tree as terrain. Thanks for all the responses, guys! It might be a day or two before I can try them out, but I'll let you know how it goes ;D
