"Well bugger me for a Catachan" said Collins, as HMS Ticocondria's shattering descent blotted out all other sound. "Seems we've well irked the bastards."
Well sod this for a pointless exercise, thought Drang. Yet more of my men dying for this no-name town, on this no-name world. And now we're not even going to get the Inquisition bunker as a consolation prize, not when I've burned Barrage four times without sleeping and we have no air.
"Buggered by a Kai-Tann, if that vox-code is right" he said, nodding to Collins' EWO. "Well, I suppose when you've used Astartes, ferals, fanatics, and other scum, the laws of probability state you've got to wind up against a competent opponent sooner or later."
"Kai-Tann? Unfamiliar" replied Collins.
"Extremely high end loyalists. Cadian levels of training, but absolutely bleeding-edge kit. One of these backend systems that gets cut off from the Imperium and comes out of it insanely stronger for it. High end sensors, good kit, good training, aaannd... Ewok, check for encrypts" said Drang. A moment later, and the EWO nodded.
"High-density...yeah. Traditional microwave and radio, but the broadcast bandwidths are scary tight." said the EWO, grimacing under his wide-brimmed storm helmet.
"Thought as much. They're gridded. Fully integrated real time command and control software, given the volume of data that's showing" Drang concluded grimly. "FĂșck. Me.
"Honestly sir, I can do my best, but with that behemoth overhead to boost their signals and process their decrypt, we've got at best half an hour before they've either cracked our comms, or jammed us out of the usable spectrums completely".
"How unexpected" deadpanned Drang, even as one of Collin's men hefted a heavy stubber into overwatch towards the enemy LZ.
"Orders, Captain?" said Collins, to which Drang shrugged, watching numbly as the last CASEVAC Valkyrie arced off, CIWS fire from the assault ship snapping at her tail.
"Siegfried always had a plan for this" he murmured, half-hoping. "Me? I'm out. Dig in and hold here, they can't vape us with four Inquisitors locked in the basement."
"Sah" was all Collins said. "Okay, Ewok, Comms, standard EWAR defensive drill. Get the lads to start laying hardlines; I need a company-to-company out to 21st, then you can start dispersing platoon lines."

"Sir, we've lost air, and reports back from the city suggest we're losing communications" reported Von Luckner's vox-man.
"Jamming or decrypt?" snapped Von Luckner, cold fury surging his veins. To have defeated fire, to have beaten back the Space Marines and the Battle Sisters, and still the damn Imperials kept coming, throwing the kitchen sink at this pointless town to save the hides of their precious Inquisitors.
"Jamming sir, but with the cogitate capacity of that warship overhead-"
"Yes lieutenant, I know" Von Luckner cut him off. "Ground troops?"
"Preliminaries indicate Kai-Tann vox-code" reported his Vox-Officer. "Extremely tight signal bandwidth, massive density. My initial suspicions were Xenos, most likely T'au, but it's definitely human."
"Oh, they're human" said Von Luckner, a cool smile ghosting across his features as he closed his eyes and remembered, facts, figures, images running through his mind like a mountain stream.
A moment later, those old, blue eyes snapped open, and his smile deepened. He was not beaten yet, not by this desperado's gambit.
"Instruct the men to go hard defensive, old-school" he said. "Aerospace?"
"Aerospace isalready responding" said Eliss, who'd dropped down to assist on the vox. "Beowulf has put up their Fencer batteries, defensive supremacy established but they're still setting up the Mjolnir's" she paused. "Beowulf Prime is also requesting permission to bring his Manticores to bear on the assault ship."
"Belay that" said Von Luckner. "Order him to set for EM burst, but hold fire."

"Orders from the Old Man. Defensive and old-school" said Collins, smirking. "We've already joined hardlines with 11th and 9th."
"Anticipating your orders, sir" murmured Drang, Dextox-blind eyes staring blankly at Collins. "I'm going to be out for an hour at minimum. Please do inform Emir I'm fine, and ask her not try and save me again. One psychic apocalypse is enough for a Tuesday."
"Heroes of mankind" quipped Collins back. "Don't worry, we're not dead yet. Diego has set up a laser-grid on the chapel spire, and we've got receivers on the Administratum building, here, and-"
"Yes, yes, I did actually read the brief on Old-School" growled Drang. "We've still lost the fornicateing initiative. Las-coms and hardlines aren't going to do much versus real time CiC."
"Deal with it, Captain" said Collins. "We've lost. Now, we cut our losses, and we bleed them dry until we can evac in the RATs, or until backup shows up."
