Ok... here I am again asking questions for my friends... They should really get on this forum themselves...
One of my buds is interested in a Dark Eldar army but does not know when they are adding the new codex and whether it would be worthwhile to start up an DE army.... I personally don't think so but he still wants me to ask...

Well, he's not going to get any ecouragement from me. I hate the models, the faction, and the fluff, but to each his own, I suppose.
If he's starting a DE army, the Codex is next on the list, so I think we'll be seeing it by year's end. They, too, will be seeing a large number of plastic models. I think, unless there's something that he wants right now, he should wait for the new 'dex.

if he has just gotta start Dark Eldar, and I know the feeling, tell him to stick with raiders and warriors for now, wyches don't have much armor and they'll get shot to pieces without a transport, the raider is cheap but very fragile, its fast so it can move 12 inches and still fire, it comes with a lance weapon that treats all armor value over 12 as 12, but it is opened topped and very fragile, no matter what you gotta be careful.
warriors have lasguns, more of less, thier bs and armor is a bit better and they can take a combination of assault weapons which you'll need, anyway warriors and raiders are likely not to change too much in the new codex, they will probably be getting new models pretty soon though.
dark elf models can make good dark eldar with a little conversion, wyches espically.
but they need raiders, everyone needs raiders.
hooray for early 90s supervillainy! its like flipping through your old stash of Image comics. heh, we used to think that stuff looked scary and cool.

Dark Eldar are one of my personal favorite armies; if I didn't play IG I would be playing them (or maybe Orks).
They're a very difficult army to play, they have saves like Guardsmen (sometimes worse) and worse yet - they can't match our numbers. It takes a high level of strategy to play an army like DE but they're badass enough to make it worth it.

Archons are made of rape. That's really the only thing I can contribute here. They have a lot of neat tricks for lowering enemy leadership and then making the enemy take leadership tests, and an Archon with Incubus retinue is a close-combat monster that should put the fear of the God-Emperor in enemy units everywhere. Combat Drugs can have random effects, but you can trigger it as many times as you have the guts to, and it can give you some ugly effects, like 12" assault, or bonus strength, and more.
Half their list is gold, and half their list is lead. Like Grotesques. They're bad and they should feel bad. Their regular warrior squads can get a pair of Dark Lances for way too few points, and those are S9 AP2 Lance weapons. With proper rolls, on the first turn you can make your opponent not have tanks anymore. Four squads of cheap-o warriors in Raiders firing a pair of Dark Lances and a Dark Lance mounted on the Raider, everything nice your opponent has will be gone. Then the Archon rushes in hopped on space cocaine and tears the enemy HQ squad several new anuses. If your opponent can withstand Dark Lances and your evil, evil close combat specialists, then you will lose and die in under two turns. Toughness 3, best save is 5+ (except for the Archon, of course, and his 2+ Invulnerable save he can take until it fails), leadership isn't great - once the enemy gets to hit back, Dark Eldar lose pretty hard. It's just, the thing is, if you do everything the Dark Eldar are supposed to do, your opponent won't be hitting back, because he won't be able to.

With proper rolls, I can make the entire battlesuit contingent of a tau army disappear into a haze of melta fire and high explosives. Same with space smurfs and termies, same for virtually every army's elite troops. (Does not include the following: Genestealers, Ard Boyz, Kasrkin, God-dedicated chaos troops in large squads, anything with more than seven models). Did that once to a chaos player. Demo charged his termies and his possessed, used the vets to mop up his havocs. He lost about 400-500 points of troops to....well, about the same number of Guardsmen. But the funny thing is, since he was defending and deployed his havocs so they couldn't be seen aside from at an angle, my veterans actually survived the battle and went on to mop up a chaos marine squad with their meltas.

Archons are made of rape. this post made me want to dust of my DE and take them for another ride, sure they usually die horribly in my hands but if I don't practice I'll never reap the benefits!

Thats the thing, You have to think tactically with the Dark Eldar. Perhaps even more so than the Guard as theres less of them. So generally, the only people still playing them, are people who have been playing them for ages.

Dark Eldar were the first army I looked at, when I was thinking of starting. Every now and then I get a funny tingling sensation and think about what it would've been like to mail-order the Jabba's sail barge look-alike. I shouldn't be thinking this way, especially with my paycheck arriving soon... Then I played Soulstorm, and Asdrubael Vect was all there with his decked out pimpwagon, and... Damn! I bet this is how ex-smokers feel about Cuban cigars...

Archons are made of rape. I don't know how that works and - to be honest - I do not want to know. I just get a mental image of being raped by an Archon.

yay, I just played a quick game of DE vs Orks, my Archon did rape, killed a trukk squad of 12 orks with her posse of incubi before getting swamped by killa cans. The rest of my warriors and raiders, eh...they pretty much got smashed into paste, but my Archon was definatly the mvp of the game.
