I've always liked the idea of guard armies massed in trenches awaiting an enemy attack. I searched for quite a while for trench systems online and they're either way too expensive or just not suitable for 40k. So, I started searching for tutorials on how to scratch build them and bummed out on that one as well. So, I've decided to make my own. I'm looking to make initially four 2'x1' tiles that I can line up for make an 8' trench line. So far, all I've done is draw up some simple cross sections and sketched out a few layout ideas. As a tip, if you're going to make your own terrain, especially stuff that models can move inside, I highly recommend taking a little time to plan it out and make sure you can actually fit models inside it, as building a model that you can't use is heartbreaking, trust me ............. I know. As a side note, as a project, I'm going to try to film the process and do a video tutorial for youtube. In all honesty, this might get sidelined by family life, but I'll try my best. CC

That would be so awesome! I would definatly follow that tutorial and make one. A friend of mine and myself are going to be making a very thick city map, and trenches would be great for the edges of the city's boundries. Can't wait until summer break!

I've wanted to make some trenches for a while now. And I will make some. And I will use your plan to start making it!: All the measurments are here on paper (Well, on my screen!). I just didn't seem to get started with that first important part!

When I do my trenches I'm going to be going the cheap route and buying Forgeworld... ok, not cheap, but definately awesome looking.

I just didn't seem to get started with that first important part! Just a quick one, I'm working on them now. Add another 1/2 inch to the width of the trench, or you'll struggle with 60mm bases. I'll post my efforts so far tomorrow as I expect to be working late into the night.

Well, it's late and I've just finished the bases. I've made them out of cake bases which personally, I think are great for scenery. Here's what I've got so far. Next stage is the earthworks. I've ordered some polystyrene sheets and a new hot wire cutter, so hopefully, I'll be working on the earthworks later this week.

How are you going to fit heavy weapon teams in? and did you planned to make the map vehicle friendly too?
just being curious by the way

At the moment, I've got four boards, two with bunkers, two with trenches and fire pits. My heavy weapon teams are mounted on 60mm bases, so they'll fit into the fit pits. In the future, I'll be added another defensive line behind this one which will contain command centres, tank pits and other bits and bobs.
If you want to know more, check out my blog in my sig mate, there's more on there.

fancy meeting you here..... : )
Nice job on the trenches so far mate, I keep meaning to reply to your thread over on TG, since I am making/will be making trenches too, although they will be cut into some modular game boards instead of free standing.
Good luck with the build.

Nice trenches! Did you consider puting jogs in the trench line so if part was lost an enemy couldn't shoot down the whole line?

@exigent99 - small world - lol, I'd love to do the modular board but it's just too much of an investment in time. When you do it, make sure you post pics. I'm always after inspiration. Colonel-Commissar, (M.I.A) - give it a go mate, even if it's only a standalone dug out. tankshock - that's the plan, I've included those in the plans at the top of this page. This one was as basic as they come. I haven't built them before, so I wanted to do a section as simple as possible. Now, I've seen the slope and trenches built, I can workout what I can actually get away with the space on the bases. The next YouTube instalment is on my blog now guys. Hope you like it.

Excellent job thus far. A quick Question: You said you're not using the fink or blue modeling polystyrene and just using styrofoam. Is it really just the stuff that comes in the bottom of boxes? I've heard that's hard to work with and doesn't take paint well. Thanks.
Keep us updated.

@ -∞∞-
in my personal use styrofoam from the boxes you can pick up for free at the grocery store work very well, i coat mine in plaster of paris to make it textured, so i have never had any problems with it not liking paint, just make sure to use a really hot knife or a hot wire cutter for it though, otherwise it will fail pretty spectacularly
also, i can try and PM you a pic of one of the plastered and painted pieces of modular terrain i have made out of styrofoam if you want.
