Hi, I am a beginning player of WH40K and I just began to purchase an Imperial Guard army. After overlooking the codex and noticing thier toughness, I thought of a battle report I read in which the Imperial Guard player had Space Marine allies. The codex makes no mention of this. How do you sucessfully take allies with your army?

Well if you look at the human phillosophy it's basically: If it's different then it must die. So basically if it's human than IG can be allies with it (Unless it's Chaos scum).
Space Marines are super humans so they do ally with IG every now and then, but view them as weaklings. (For obvious reasons).
Inquisitorials shall ally with thine brothers and sister to defeat the damned heretics.
Unlikely Allies Dispite of the human way of life Imperial Guards break the rules all the time. So you can ally with xenos races, if possible, if the situation is dire.
Kroot being a mercenary race, well half of it anyways, is obviousally a willing fighter to join you in battle. Just don't mind the smell...
Tau is actually willing to let ANY race to be their allies, to fight for the Greater Good. So these peaceful short things are willing to lend you a hand with their high tech gear.
Eldar actually thinks of you as lowly creatures, but to save themselves some Eldar will join you, or some Eldar will join you to clence the Chaos scum. (like Ultwe)
Orks=No no Tyrinids=Sure if you want them to eat you first Necrons=\v/3 h8 |_| \/|l_3 creatures (Leet is very time consuming) Dark Eldar would rather kill you Choas=Damnation

Traitor IG armies could be allies with Chaos marines. IG could also be allies with tyranids as this was possible in tryanid cult armies in 2nd ed but then never brought it back for 3rd ed. Just build 2 seperate armies which fill up the compulsary slots in the force organisation charts.

I like the thought of using an inquisitor lord with a bunch of stormtrooper henchmen in a chimera (maybe a couple sanctioned psyker models added in to play different henchmen type roles in the squad)..kit the stormtroopers out with mass special weaponry and use it like an uber stormtrooper squad of doom..then take a vindicare assassin and use a cadian sniper model to stand in for him. all of this would keep the IG feel and not make it seem like you had inquisitorial allies attached to your guard army. just a thought

I use Daemonhunters and Inquisitors occasionally , as well as the assasins.
But that is mainly because they were part of my story (in the Fluff forum) and fit really well with it. Plus I really wantd an excuse to paint the models :-)

I think that using allies takes away the fun from using IG. The IG have their good and bad points and taking allies just to fill in the bad points seems like a kop-out way of doing things. If you want an army that excels in everything then use smurfs.

It'll be OK if people use allies once in a while just to keep their opponents guessing but for a while it seemed that almost everbody was adding a Inquisitor squad as standard.

If you just want a small number of Marines for fluffy reasons you can take a Deathwatch Kill Team as a HQ choice (provided you already have a HQ I think), which gives you between 5 and 10 veteran marines. Expensive as all hell point wise though. My memory is a bit shady, but if I recall you can find the rules for the Deathwatch Team for free online.

"Space Marines are super humans so they do ally with IG every now and then, but view them as weaklings. (For obvious reasons)." Wimps have to wear power armour.Real men jump out the back of Valkyries. That said i am a purest so i only use IG in my IG armies, it really doesn't fit in my opinion. Opinions are like noses though, every one has one.Stick with the straight guard, nothing like rooting for the underdog and doing a victory dance after defeating a smurf player with only guardsmen.
