We all know that painting black things can be difficult - black leather, black fatigues, black armour. It's very, very difficult to highlight well. But I know how to do it, though it simply takes some time and patience.
Colours:
- Chaos Black
- Codex Grey
Step #1:
Spray your miniature with Chaos Black spray primer or any other black primer.
Step #2:
Now go over any areas you wish to be black with Chaos Black paint to ensure they are fully coated in rich black paint.
Step #3:
Time to make a mix. Get an older brush or a dry brushing brush, and something to mix with, like an old glossy floor tile, or a tupperware container top.
Get approximatly 3 "blobs" of Chaos Black paint, and put them on the paint mixer pallete that you've designed.
Now get about half of a blob of Codex Grey and mix it in well. Add in a very small amount of water.
Fully mixed, this first mix should not look much lighter than Chaos Black. It is meant as a start to the higlights, not necessarily to be a visible highlight.
Using your smallest detail brush, line the edges of what you wish to highlight, but use wider lines than you normally would for a highlight.
Step #4:
Using that same shade of mix, add in another blob of Codex Grey until you see it significantly lighten. Add in some more water.
Using your detail brush, use the lighter mix to line the edges of your black pieces, but make sure you don't obscure the original highlights.
Step #5:
Highlight with straight up Codex Grey
Step #6:
Wash the black parts with Badab Black
