Well, I don´t use them anymore (just have three models with Hellguns left) but I did use them in 3rd Ed. somewhat. I had a ten men unit with a flamer, melta gun (sometimes a second, instead of one flamer) and a veteran sergeant w. plasma pistol, bolter (that stock model ;D). Even though Deep Strike was worse back then they did reasonably well. I did take out a Leman Russ for my Catachan opponent a couple of times and even toasted his HQ a few times. They were okay but in the new Codex I have found other fun units and they (or rather the models) don´t really fit into my fluff anymore... But... I have plans to rebuild that unit...

I use them all the time.
5 Deepstriking stormies with two melta guns ;D ;D ;D
They nearly always manage to knock out some armour. I fact that I have them means my opponent is reluctant to keep his troops in transports for too long.

keeping the objective in missions that require holding an objective. one guard squad arrives at an objective, it's easily dispatched. my theory? send a whole platoon of guardsmen to surround the objective and put the stormtroopers on the objective to hold it. just thoughts..gotta finish painting my kasrkins

I think Storm troopers are excellent support if you run into trouble. I once was lumped into hand 2 hand and the trooper assistance saved the day where shock troopers wouldnt. They are really good at being annoying too.

I use them to either tie down a table quarter in my grenadiers doctrine, with a veteran sergeant with a storm bolter and two guys with a plasma gun, or advance to claim objectives or as a sacrifical lamb if needed to slow something down that does not have power weapons

When i used to use stormtroopers i used them in one of three ways;
1 - Reactionary force. I would deep strike them near enemy armour or tough creatures that were sure to pose a threat and deal with them on my terms.
2 - Hold the line (this was in 3rd ed but can still be used in 4th). Put them in front of my platoons so that they could shoot in safety, using storm troopers to block enemy line of sight. 4+ saves made them last quite a while. Still effective in 4th ed as people will tend to shoot at your better troops first.
3 - Objective grabbing. Have them deepstrike onto objectives.
Of course you have to be playing missions which allow deepstrike for them to be really effective. I'm planning to buy 2 Valkyries in the next 3 months to get around this, plus i'm going for the 'coolness' of it.

Troops! Put them in chimeras and they're a fast, hard(er) hitting guard troop that can take more damage.
Also, having two meltaguns is nice.

I've been away from 40k for a while but recently have returned. I still havent gotten the hang of my grenadiers, they just seem to get shot up badly by anyone with heavy bolters sitting around. I think I'm going to use them to claim quarters and as a counterassault unit but NEVER as a unit that advances infront of the regular guardsmen.

Using regular guardsmen as meatshields is fairly useless in 4th edition. All they have to do is make a leadership test, and they can still blast your stormtroopers with heavy bolters.
That's why all my grenadiers go in chimeras.

i have tried a few Proxy games with my Krieg and have found that my storm troopers work best by moving up and down my battle line and destroying threats as they present themselves.

yep. had a battle today vs orks (hard hard fight - he tailored his list to counter me when I showed up and revealed my army but hey, that's war, things dont always go your way). started my grenadiers totally hidden and neutrally deployed, then once I saw the way things were going to go I walked them out to reinforce a squad that was getting rocked pretty hard. they got their in time to support that firebases charge from cover which ended up bringing a suprise rapid fire sh!tstorm on the orcs with one of my beat up squads finishing by charging instead of firing and taking away the orcs charge. hah it was brilliant and the orc commander started to freak out seeing that powerweapon lurking around near his warboss they did a great job, robbed him of a scoring unit with the nasty rapid fire from the grenadiers on the last turn. I still lost but it was a truely valiant show from the Cadian 551st Light Infantry!

I have 2 squads of 8 men each. I use a gernade launcher and a plasmagun in each. They are great units that work well for holding points.

I'm tooling a couple 5 man squads for deepstrike anti-artillery/armor duty. we'll see how that goes, seems a popular role for them.

yep. I didnt use em for a long time but then I tried out deepstriking squads of 5 and I will never go without them again. 1 squad killed 2 sisters of battle tanks (those ones with the organ on top) and immobilized a chimera. they had a plasma gun/meltagun combo for the weapon choice so they'd have a brutal melta shot for when they were really close but then the plasma gun gave extra volume of fire for when they were only within 12". they are very strong. my other squad is 2x meltaguns and a plasma pistol.

I run 2, 8 men squads in chimeras for a 1500 point battle. Have them charge up a flank and unload. Nobody wants 16 rapid firing stormtroopers in their lines, makes a hell of a mess.

I'm stealing your idea about 2 chimeras full of stormies and a russ to protect the flank armor on the chimerae just so you know madman

10 Stormers deepstriking with 2x Meltas. Following up, if I take the Grenadiers doctrine I pop another squad with 2x Plasma guns. This runs along with my AF squad and backs them while they whale away with their flamer/melta and HB/AC. This group is again supported by a squad of Hardened Vets with 2 plasmas and an AC infiltrated into cover if there is any, failing that they walk behind the Chimeras ^-^

for 20pts more you could have 2x 5 man stormtrooper squads deepstriking with 2x meltaguns each. just a thought.

heh I got shelled to hell one battle with my all infantry army and couldn't do anything but sit there and take it for 6 straight rounds because I didn't have a prayer at reaching my opponents arty. after that battle, I've taken deepstriking stormies against every army that is capable of, and likely to field artillery type units to avoid a repeat of that bloody occasion.
