I just read that independent characters count as their own unit in hand to hand so must be in base to base to get their attacks in on the enemy, which pretty much frags my whole independent commissar/conscripts strategy. I dont think it's worth it to spend 50pts to make them fight to the last man but it's doable.

But can't IC's join a unit and is therefore classed as being as part of that unit. (I ain't got my rulebook handy).

They can, but in assaults they are counted like an own unit for close combat purposes etc. (Ie. must be in base-to-base to strike and if they are, can be singled out, not good... )

Actually, they can be singled-out if they're within 2" of the enemy but can only attack if in Base-to-base. So you use them to tie up multiple units. Remember, after the first one charges, the rest can go wherever they want, so technically, if you spread them out enough, you could tie up half of the board as long as you keep them within 2" of each other.

the REAL downside to the tactic is the fact that it dislocates my back in 8 places moving a 50 man squad more than once hehe.

Who would use an IC + 50 conscripts just to have the commissar fighting? Such a group is for blocking. Keeps this awful thingies like Nightbringer far away from you

Truly, it's a unit like this that is used to tie up 2-3 squads of berzerkers while you shoot the crap outta the rest of them.

I got two Squads of 10 man Conscripts In My Army to Use As 'Fodder' ...... only Problem is, It Never Works!! Both Squads Have For Some reason or another proven Themselves To Be tough As Nails and Annoy the Crap out of my opponents ... I swear both squads have earned the Honorifica Imperialis and the Medallion Crimson on numerous occassions!!!

yep conscripts rock they are IGs human (non-abhuman) answer to counter charge or 'take the hit' units along with rough riders. one of my favorite tactics as of late is to take the charge with my conscripts and have an officer nearby but if the conscripts get wrecked then leave them without the officers leadership so they break and are swept - then move in with a nearby hellhound and scorch the earth black where the enemy squad is. this works great vs 4+ armored infantry (I've been playing vs Eldar alot lately).

I'm afraid that this cannot be done....if the IC is not in b2b with the enemy then he cannot be targeted. He must be in b2b with the enemy for the one in b2b with him or supporting models to target him.
