"From my vision, I saw... roughly a small platoon's worth-- two dozen or so plasma weapons. Ork plasma weapons mind you, not quality produced Imperial plasma guns with safety features on them that prevent them from overheating... they should be easy to pick out, these Orks have no sense of subtlety after all..."
"This is Rogue Trader Melissia. Be advised, Overwatch has detected numerous Ork buildings and structures within the fortress. You are not only encouraged to destroy anything that is not Imperial, you are ordered to do so-- Lord General's orders, not mine."

"Plasma is Plasma, Ma'am, and I don't want to take any chances when it's pointed at me." replied Van Dremmond. "Especially not now..." he murmured under his breath.
----------------------------------------------
"Roger that, Ma'am, we'll keep that in mind." Dunbar tactfully refrained from mentioning that's what he was going to do anyway, even if he hadn't gotten her permission. He relpaced the Vox head, and tapped the Ork on the knee.
"Hey, Kommissar," he somehow managed to pronouce the word with a "K", "Want a cigar? I usually light one up for good luck before the fight, but since you're standing in the turret, you get the honor this time."

"Hurrhurr! Perfect! Two gunz, a cigar in me mouth. Now all I need is some kinda bosspole. I'll get the Boss to make me one once we clear out dese grots. I'll be da spittin' image of a 'ero, an' dere's only one thing betta dan winnin' a fight-- winnin' in style!
I like you 'umie. I'll be sure ta watch yer back when da fightin' starts!"
"I am merely doing my duty, sir..." Even so, she obviously didn't LIKE doing her duty, but then one could hardly blame her given the risks she had to take.
Then, oddly enough, she muttered to herself: "Emperor be praised for air conditioning..."

Dunbar smiled as he passed the pack of cigars up to the Ork. He had never liked smoking anyway, but it was considered a good luck charm for whoever was standing in the turret to light one up.
He picked up his vox. "This is Lifeguard. We're moving into position now. All units check in. Madison, once we've got a green light from everybody, your guns can open the show."
-----------------------------------
Raising an eyebrow at the Psyker but saying nothing, Van Dremmond tapped his commbead. "This is Grendel Troop. Royals and us are almost in position. Put us down as Green for Go."

"May the Emperor have mercy upon your souls then, Stealthers. The first wave of artillery has already been launched." Looking on her Command Rhino's displays, she shook her head sadly. Even though those basilisks were firing lighter ordinance so as not to hurt the bastions, they and the siege mortars would be more than enough to wipe out-- or nearly so-- anything not protected by the bastions themselves.
But then, that's what they earned really, for not sticking with the plan, which involved bombardment of the enemy base, followed by an invasion and clearing out the bastions and keep.

"Lifeguard, this is Thrasher. Should we go bust out those idiots who got into the Fort?" After a second's hesitation, Dunbar responded. "No. I doubt any of them will be left after our Arty hits home, and I'm not rushing into this attack. That'll only get more men killed." He switched vox channels. "Eagle Eye 1, go ahead and begin jamming the Orks now. Let's see them try to get a warning out..."
"Roger that, jamming."

"This is Royals. Orks packing plasma? Great. Next thing you know, they'll have snipers to counter ours."
Asis switched to a seperate channel.
"This is Lead to all Sniper units. Priority one to the Ork plasma gunners, along with the warboss. Although if given the choice, take out the warboss first. Stick to the walls. Yes, I know there aren't much places to hide, but it's not like they could hit you with anything less than a rocket. Even then, you could probaby snipe the rocket."

Over the comm, Van Dremmond hears a familiar voice, "Sorry we're a little late here, had to wait for the supply shipment from the home planet. We're making the landing now," said Callidon guiding his men from their landers, "mind giving us an update on the situation, or at least guiding us to someone who can?"

"Bwoss, bwoss! I tink I see sum 'umie trukkz comin'!" With an uncaring thump, the grot was killed instantly by the larger Mek, who was still fiddling with his kustom mega-blasta, trying to get more dakka out of it without making it more dangerous to himself to use. "Agghrrrl... quiet gitface! I'z workin' on somethin'..." The rest of hte grots looked at eachother and immedintly scattered to the winds, not DARING to go get close to any Orks. They fled the keep and the bastions, out onto the gates and walls, beginning to look harder, wonderinf if they're just seeing mirages...
"I tink I sees one! Right dere!" "Bah, Runlotz, yer a blind git!" "But I sees it too!" "I don see nuffin'! Yer a dumb git, dumber dan a snotlin'!" The grots started to argue about it to themselves, losing track of the visions they thought they saw in the desert, with half the grots arguing that there couldn't possibly be any humans outside the slaves in the hive city, the other half arguing that there's no doubt because they saw them.
[ooc: Keep in mind, these walls are thick enough that you can have three humans walking side by side on them withhout touching shoulders (albeit, just barely). Only the gates are thinner, and any decent commander (IE, not the big mek commanding this fortress) would easilly have heavy weapons teams manning guns on the walkways above and on the walls near the gates.]

"Welcome to the war, Major. We're moving in to postion to assault the Ork Fortress. If you and your boys hoof it, you can make it here before all the fun is over. Set up pickets outside the side gates and wipe out any Orks that try to flee through them."

"1st squad, clear the left section of the wall, 2nd hit the right, 3rd, clear the middle. All sniper units, you're on your own, take targes of oppurtunity. My command unit will help out 3rd. Once the walls are clear, take up postions, and support the main assault!"

As the grots started yankin' on limbs and ears, and clawing and biting as they tend to do, they heard an explosion.
And a large group of them were gone.
Scrambling desparately to get off the walls, many grots fell to their death as they were simply shoved off by their compatriots, and others were ripped apart by more and more artillery. Still others were decimated in the grounds, ripped to shreds by the siege mortars and light arty. Orks and Meks who heard the explosion rushed out to see what was happening, although few of them were actually hurt that badly. The grots ran like a daemon out of the warp to find cover, into a building, and so on, as the Meks and Boyz attempted to figure out what was going on... they weren't even sure WHERE this attack was coming from.
The invasion had begun.

"Alright, let's kick this off. Task Force One, move out." "Thrasher here, copy that." "Linebacker, moving in."
Dunbar's Vanquisher cruised out from behind a dune, and paused, like a predator sniffing the air. "Target, gun emplacement above the gate. Range, 170m" Dunbar made a final tweak to the aim, and fired. The shell screamed into the gate, blasting the gun position apart. "Scratch turret, acquiring next target."
---------------------------------
McGrath shouted into his vox "Joker, suppress the wall to the left of the gate. We'll take right!" "Roger that Linebacker, engaging!"
The two Exterminators began to walk streams of shells across the parapets of the fort, blasting apart any Ork foolish enough to raise it's head over the wall.
---------------------------------
"Alright boys, stay loose. Support the Mordians as they advance, and try not to squash any of them." said Yates coolly into his vox. Thrasher, accompanied by Iron Saint and Centurion, rolled forward, occasionally spitting a shell at the fortress walls.
---------------------------------
"Royals, we just got word that the assault on the main gate has begun. Better tell your guys and gals to lock and load."
---------------------------------
Gate Crasher rolled forward, it's cannon angled toward the wall.

Jara'naxifus fired at the scrambling silhouettes on the rampart. The silent shots left the sound of the distant human forces lonely in the air. They were a good distance from them, though dressed in their disguises just in case. Jara'naxifus shot again and saw a silhouette drop.
"Five," he said.
"Seven," Lynx replied. Lynx fired. "Eight." Saldella was last: only three.
...
" human " Fenera strained with her telepathy to the Rogue Trader's psyker, " warn your comrades that my kin are in the field. " Fenera cursed as she and the others drove through the night towards the distant glow. "Is Jara'naxifus trying to lose his precious life?" she asked the eldar in the truck around her, "he should not be so reckless."
"I do not believe he foresaw the attack like you did," replied Mhaldin, loading his eldar rifle and wrapping it in rag to hide it. "I do not believe he will come with us when we reach him. And I hope the rock-headed humans don't shoot at us." Both siblings looked nervously at Svva'cke in the corner. Mhaldin had assigned Drisss and H'aulk to keep their eyes on him, just in case...

Inexplicably, soon after that message was sent, a voxcast was sent out on the secure command frequency: "Be advised, the civilians encountered earlier are in the field, apparently attempting to snipe. So long as they stay out of your way, it'd probably be best to leave them alone. I will personally talk to them about warning us beforehand after the battle is over, and any friendly fire casualties should be reported to me so that I may deal with it."

"Tell them that if they go inside the fort, they'll die. If it's inside and it's not wearing a Guard uniform, it dies." snapped Dunbar.
"Lifeguard, this is Gate Crasher. Want to pick the lock for us? Over
Dunbar could see the Demolisher tank approaching the gate,
'Roger that Gate Smasher, one popped lock, coming up." Dunbar trained his gun sights on the center of the main gate. He lowered his aim just a tad.
"Bang"
The gun fired, sending the armour piercing shell screaming into the gate, punching straight through it. The gate shuddered, and remained intact.
"All yours, Gate Crasher."
-----------------------------------
"Roger that, thanks Lifeguard."
Sgt. Morain trained his gun sights on the hole in the gate. "Ah, there we go." He nudged his aim down a but, and fired. The shell ripped apart a huge chunk of the gate, but it still stood. "Load!" shouted Morain Pvt. Keck slammed another shell into the breach of the gun. "Loaded!" "Firing!" Another shell struck the gate, ripping half of it off. "Loa-" "Loaded!" yelled Keck, before Morain could finish. The cannon spoke for a third time, blasting in the remainder of the gate.
"Gate is down, gate is down!" yelled Morain into his vox. The Demolisher lurched forward into the breach, spraying flaming promethium from it's hull and sponson flamers.
"Knock knock arseholes!" Shouted Morain, and fired the cannon into the nearest group of Orks.
-----------------------------------
"Gate is down, gate is down!"
Van Dremmond picked up his vox "Royals, the gate is down, begin the attack!"
The Vehicles of Task Force 2 roared into life and sped toward the rear gate, weapons blazing.
-----------------------------------
"Thunder 3, you are clear to begin your attack run, over."

The Ork let out a loud woop, celebrating this demolishment of the gate by sweeping the storm bolters-- both the one in his hand and the pintle-mounted one-- across the line of Grots taht were firing helplessly at the tanks from within. "HAHAH! Run ya insubord'nate little runts, cause Da Kommissar's comin' fer ya!"
He was indeed having a grand old time. 'Umies, he reckoned, may be lacking in choppy, but they really knew how to put on the dakka.
"... sir.... I feel psychic resonance from within the keep... it's... strange, it's not an Ork presence... it is fifty metres beneath the ground, under the keep, nothing to worry about yet I think, but I will tell you if it moves... please do not inform anyone, we do not want anyone to panick... it might be some kind of artefact that the higher-ups want preserved..."
She looked extremely uncomfortable-- well, more than was obviously normal anyway.
"LEGGIT! I's not dyin' fer deez orks, run run ru-GHRK!" The Boyz began to charge down, and cleaved through the Grots as they did so. Just over 100 boyz, split roughly evenly at each gate. The Meks charged up their kustom mega-blastas, but seemed to be unable to hit anything-- their shots flew around wildly as if cursed, but they were at least frequent enough to keep anyone other than Groknar himself from manning pintle weapons.
