First of all, the high altitude landers are rather small craft(relatively), able to carry only one platoon. These landers stay in low orbit/high altitude, where they stay on station. Once they receive coordinates, or a beacon, they can lock onto a certain area with about half a klick maximum margin of error. (Although usually, they are very accurate, dropping the platoon within a few meters of each other.)
Anyhow, each pod has it's own little area, where it is fired out at extremly high enough velocity. The trooper inside often experiences quite a bit of discomfort, as the pods are pretty much treated like giant missiles.
Once the pod gets low enough (in range of AA or missiles), the outer exoskeleton gets ejected, creating quite a bit of chaff for the pod. The ejected pieces of the exoskeleton simply get barged aside if they come in contact with a pod.
Once the pod gets even lower (You can sort of see them now with binoculars, although you won't see them for long), the remaining exoskeleton shatters off, revealing the inner pod. That pod fires thrusters at the bottom of the pod, quickly expending the fuel as fast as possible.
That is enough to slow the pod down enough so the trooper survives the impact, however, as the pod slams into the ground with near bone shattering force, the trooper opens his/her jaw before hand, so his/her teeth don't get shattered.
Once down, the trooper inside can choose when to eject the entry way, and the entry way blows forward, smashing into anything in it's path. Then the soldier is ready to fight.
That was a small explanation, more later since I have to go now.

@reds: Are you in a convoy heading for the fortress? I'm approaching nicholasakira's position.

@tgs: The convoy with Nicholaskira's forces and my Salamanders is already back at base, and has been for a little while now. There is no convoy headed to the Fortress yet, since we aren't going to attack it until the next day.
@nicholaskira: Sgt. McVane went to go find Melissia's chara when you arrived.
He'll be back with her shortly (I hope).

@rt: Dunbar is a Major, and last I checked, Lucan is a Captain, so Dunbar outranks him. He's also in charge of the operation. Keep in mind, your job is just to seize a gatehouse, and help Kai and my Mech platoon hold it. Airstrikes on the gate and the interior would be a bad idea, since we'll have armour and foot infantry all over the inside. Reds

Also, we're got to keep the place intact so we can actually have something to duck behind when fighting off the Orks.
EDIT: When should I launch the landers? Today? Tomorrow?

Five of my rangers (the ones with the waveserpent) are probably going to get swept up in the assault. The serpent itself, they'll likely have parked in a cave.

I'll have the dropzone marked for Kai tomorrow morning when I wake up. I want to give everyone a chance to ask questions and RP their guys getting prepared. I'll try to kick off the assault around 1:00-2:00 EST tomorrow.
Also, if anyone wants to go out with the Salamders, now is the time to talk to McVane. Grendel and my Sents are going out too, but the Sallies are going out ahead of them to mark the DZ.

It was generally a tactics discussion, so we should be a bit slower tomorrow, during the assault and afterwards.

Alright, it's night now, so make sure all your guys are dressed warmly. @kai: They're setting up the beacons now to mark the DZ. Next time someone posts, I'll activate them. The rest of Task Force 2 is moving out now. Melissia: Where is Dur Kommissar going to be? Dunbar suggested that he ride with an Exterminator, which will be in the thick of the fighting. Reds

After linking back up with imperial forces, the monian 37th is about to assist the attack on the fortress (unofficially of course, Varlons almost used to court marshals by this point in his career).

Alright, my troops are "in position" or as good as. The attack will begin once everyone else is ready. Ignatius and Helmian: You guys need to be in position with Dunbar. Ignatius, your guys will open the assault. Helmian, your guys will be the first in once I break the gate, followed by my forces and Ignatius' infantry. @kai: Your guys can move on foot or ride the Chimeras. have them mount up or head out. Also, Saler has been delivered to Asis @rt: How much time do you need for your Valks to get into position for their assault. The second gate attack will begin at about 0630 (RP time), and it will probably take 10min or so for Kai to wipe the walls clean so you can fast rope troops onto them. @tgs: You can move in undeclared if you want, but that's a good way to get your men killed by friendly fire. If you engage without identifying yourself as Imperial, my tanks will probably exterminate your infantry with extreme prejudice, as they will assume you're a hostile contact (If it's not Imperial and it's armed, kill it, is the thinking). Best to go with Ignatius' troops and follow the tanks in, or run long range patrols past the fort to give us a heads up if the enemy sends reinforcements. Reds

Which will probably happen. Orks may make silly mistakes occasionally, but they are crazy prepared for war-- and they certainly know how to use radios.

B=Bastion W=Wall G=Gate K=Keep (large bastion) I sent this to Reds, but I figured everyone should see it. It's a rough and somewhat simplistic map of the fortress. Keep in mind that it has more than enough room for every single force to have its own little area, and that's without using the keep or bastions, or the positions on the walls. Essentially, even with the 500 men and women in the Shibaran companies that will stay as garrison, its defenses are still undermanned.

Well given that a Valk moves at 3-400 KPH, and we're only a few klicks out: 5 minutes, as they're already mounted up. Come in low out of the rising sun, and beging strafing the orks with rocket pods.

Keep in mind it's night now, and there's still about an hour and a half until the attack starts (so everyone can RP getting in position). I thought when you said your guys were "mounted up" , you just meant they were sitting in the Valks on the landing pad, waiting for the go word.
Just out of curiosity, will you be flying in over the base to the far gate, and strafing the interior in the process, or will you be circling around and dropping the troops off on the gate, then straffing as you leave? Either one works, really, but straffing as you come in would be better, as there's less of a chance of hitting any friendly troops that have moved into the fort via the front gate already.
Not sure which direction the sun is rising from, since I can't seem to find the bloody map Melissia posted...

As they come in and providing close support to the landed troops. 45 flak-armoured Guardsmen need to give the Orks something else to shoot at them to have any hope of clearing the buildings.
