I use carapace armour because I go up against marines and it gives you a 50/50 save against bolter fire as opposed to no save.
I know people say use cover but it's sometimes hard to find cover for 100+ men.
I don't bother with bionics.
Anyway this might all change with 4Ed as I've heard that the AP has to be lower then the armour save to auto wound.
ie You'll still get your 5+ save against AP5 bolters.

carapace is good with a 4+ armour save but i dont like equiping carapace armour to infantry platoons because in the special equipment paragragh it says "each special piece of equipment must be applied to every available model" so i would have to give to every squad in the army carapace armour and that would cost alot!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

carapace armor is good against enemy rifles, cover is good for reaching enemy rifle range I personally see bionics as one of those fluff things where if you have a guy who's seen alot of action and always dies maybe someday rework things so he can have bionics to reflect his veteran-ness. not really worth it point wise, but worth 5x the point value in fluffiness when used correctly

Bionics not worth the points? hehe, you tell that to my commissar who stood up after being ripped apart by a half-strength marine squad, only to stand up the next round, turn about, and save the squad of Guardsmen that were about to be slaughtered by those very same marines. He wiped out every single one of the little blighters (and one lucky club wound from a guardsman). It was pretty funny because everyone watching just did a double take at the dice when I rolled a 6 (something I've done only a handful of times ever) and when he went on a clobbering spree a chorus of "Oooohhh" went up around the table. I've never been more proud of any of my men

Well, Bionics isn't bad but it isn't inherently good either.
I like it strictly for fluff and am tempted to build a totally fluffy PDF force from one of the Adeptus Mechanius worlds with Carapace and Cybernetics as doctrines along with say Conscripts Veterans and something else for the 5th doctrine.
Seems like a fun idea but would be expensive in terms of $ and points that it'd have to be a labor of passion rather than competition.

yeah; I think it was alexcage that has the army from the world that is so heavily into the technology production - aspiring forgeworld I think he said. he's got the fluff to totally back up all those technology doctrines

I'd love to have carapace armor but I'm a WYSIWYG freak so I wont use the doctrine. A cool alternative is 'grenadiers.' It allows you to take some 4+ infantry then take your normal 5+ armored heavy weapon squads and they're all WYSIWYG but you get a carapace-ish feel at a budget price.

I love the 4+ save. Frankly the survivabilty of my infantry is really increased, plus it lets me put a lot more faith in my little guys.

Carapace armour is quite nice against anti infantry fire like all AP-, AP6, AP5 weapons. Indeed, you can use it against quite all shooty armies....Nice!!! As for bionics, it seems to be a matter of fluff I think or a matter of luck!!! I should say that take the doctrines you want according to the kind of fluff you want for your guard army

personelly without carapace guardsmen dont really get anywhere. One big problem is that it costs heaps and when u have 80+ men that gets very very costly. Carapace armour is extremly difficult to fit in a 1000pts army.

of course guardsmen can get somewhere...its just that we lose a heck lot of guys in the process...which is natural...but i wouldnt choose the carapace armour spec. equip. if my oponent was equiped with AP4 and lower weapons such as assault cannons, heavy bolters and plasma cannons...otherwise...THAT would be a waste of points

It's always a waste of points Just for the pts you have to spend for HQ, and 1 platoon with 2 squads and an armoured fist I get you another squad with heavy and special weapon and cover saves are most of the time 4+ as well...

Wait, Can you give Carapace and Bionics to a conscript platoon? And since it's 1 unit, do you only pay for the equip once? That means 50 conscrpits with that armor would only be 240 for a 4+ save and a 6+ invuln. It's like 4.8 points per model for those beasts. Sure the stat line sucks, but I think thats something to explore.

nice idea though, i didn't even think of that!. personally i only give carapace armour to those models that need it like officers, priest you know the kids with the kick ass ld also bionics are great if want to add extra flavour to your vetrans and if you want your guardsmen to get up after the combat passes over them rember the enemy is now within rapid fire range ;D

The bionics troops get via Bionic Enhencement are totally different from the ones officer and other characters can get via the armory. And even if it would work giving these special equipments could be given to conscripts, you would have to pay the cost for every squad and not just once for the whole platoon

I've given it to my Senior officer. Is it worth it? (carapace)

Carapace? Oh yeah. I mean, look at the basic weapons you're going to be facing out there: Pulse Rifles, Bolters, Hellguns, Shootas... pretty much everything ignores 5+ saves. (Welcome to the Imperial Guard, here's your T-shirt and your flashlight...) By taking Carapace armor, your troops will be able to shrug off pretty much every basic weapon in the game, requiring heavy weapons to be used against you. Conversly, you'll still most likely outnumber nearly every opponent out there.
On a single-model basis (such as via Wargear to an Officer), however, it's wasted points. Unless the unit can reliably boast a majority 4+ save, you'll never get to use it.

well it does give them a 50% cahnce of armor save instead of the 33% chance, also (for me at least) it gives my saves against SM bolters, which noramlly pierce

well it ias a doctrine, but i think you can buy it as wargear also, so any vetren in your command, and of course your officer, may take it if they wish, not sure on it's points though
