If you wanted the fluff to your army to be representative if what you've got there, why not write in that the "eccentric engineer" is one of the few remaining survivors of the destroyed Squat race (more can be found on Squats on wikipedia - or just ask me/others...). With Squats, you have the advantage that they are not restricted to seeing technology as a religion - they were far more practical shall we say, in that they saw technology more like we do (you could even go as far as to have a "techpriest enginseer" in your Guard army and use the "White Dwarf Subscription model". Now, although I can't really see any problems you'd encounter using this to explain why the Guard were happy enough to flaunt their religious doctrine in this manner, you may come up against some issues with Space Marines (who would be more dogmatic). Ofcourse this is nothing a bit of careful fluff creation couldn't deal with - maybe they are on the verge of being declared heretic for their "forward thinking" values, or maybe they recruit from a world where the machine cult is weak/unheard of? I certainly like the direction you're going though, and it's deffinately an interesting way to allow your crerative modelling skills to help define your army and fluff! Good on you! (and if you're getting that kind of encouragement from an Inquisitor of the Ordo Hereticus, you should be fine! )

Oh I had no clue technology was seen that way, are squats really the absolutely only ones or could it be possible for a techpriest to have secretly lost his faith? Normally I like to keep things largely militaristic looking by terms of our current view, why I kinda stopped improving my Inquisitor attachment. However I would really enjoy gettin' to make some ridiculous tech harness. Shame everyone says the techpriest are difficult to make work. I would love to make up servitors like a group of engineers instead.
I figure as my regiment is largely cut off from things, as I like the nobody is coming to save them idea. So if Space Marines have a problem, all the better reason for me to explain why they are the ones I run into most beyond Tyranid. Oddly enough, I have a friend who also knows no fluff and made a group of supposedly super militaristic mercenaries. In exchange for this tech the engineer can invent from them, they formed an alliance against the Tyranid. Something my guard certainly didn't want to do, but it was life or death. So I think I've firmly steeped myself in heresy, despite the fact I've got an Grey Knights Inquisitor attachment. One very few things I know is that supposedly Grey Knights wipe out anyone they attach to in order to prevent any possible corruption, thus I figured we offed them through some massive stroke of luck and are now wanted. Though not exactly a big threat and firmly not worth the trouble of goin' to a planet so infested. Plus they don't know exactly who we are, so there are reasons they don't swat us like flies.
Not exactly somethin' I've given much thought, but I'm much more fond of a massively screwed underdog concept to being part of this ginormous fleet.

Well you could always take the fluff that: "There has been a localised warp storm in the area, cutting off the planet from Imperial aid, and with the lack of Mechanicus influence that has resulted from this, the people of the world have become more "creative" with their techological advancements. A current respite in the warp storms has now allowed an Inquisitor and a small force to investigate the planet to check for any signs that suggest the storms have resulted in Daemonic presence." That might work.. not saying you HAVE to do that though ! Just as an aside, Grey Knights generally aren't the ones who "wipe out" those who have come into contact with Chaos forces - thats more the role and decision of Inquisitors (who may be with the Grey Knights. Still doesn't always happen though - it's very much dependant on the Inquisitor themself, which would be your decision The underdog concept is generally far more fun than the mighty fleet too (in my opinion) but it's also fun to have the fleet available somewhere/somehow... Have to say I'm liking the sound of your stuff - are there amy photos etc around or a project thread?

That works swimmingly.
Well I saw someone posting the actual photo of a small paragraph in a book sayin' that they always did without exception just to be safe, but the reason he was posting it was to ascertain if it should be taken as legitimate. The general sentiment found it interesting, but didn't put much stock in someone mentioned so casually.
All the pictures I have anymore are in the first posts. No project logs. I had a previous post of the same name as this one, but all the old pictures are gone unfortunately.

They are some awesome pics at the start of the thread... I was just hungry for more ;D
Grey Knights are far more concerned with dealing with Daemons and the infestations associated with them. The purity/possession/spiritual corruption of Guardsmen is the job of Inquisitors (namely the Ordo Hereticus, but any that are there really!)
