I have never played 'Nids so I wouldn't know much about the rigors of alien assault phases but I tend to use my command squad for LD not combat ^_^

I used my command hq for Ld9/master vox/standard/mortar work too but any smart opponent will just artillery it to death and move on. going with a more combative Ld8 army not only has saved me a bundle of points, but has reduced the squads threat by a huge amount, letting it sneak around alot more. also having it mobile makes the standard 10x more effective (though getting into an assault makes the standard not work, boo)..but yeah. either way works good, but when you're getting ruined in assault every game, it's good to add some strength to the command squads (both platoon level and command platoon lvl) so that they can help out in assault I'm finding.
certainly nothing wrong with having a Ld command squad, but having a command squad that can turn the tide of an assault is a beautiful thing.
I'm thinking of doing the regimental standard and a commissar w/ powerfist to go with my sanctioned psyker and senior officer. that'll make for a bulky command squad that has some punch, is able to take a bit of damage, and buffs all nearby combats via the standard.

Commissars rock! In the last three games i have played he has killed my officer, usually leaving just himself and a priest to counter assault. Give him powerfists and you will not be disappointed

There's plenty of ways to pimp a CHQ. Primary problem is that they are just guardsmen. They shoot, not fight! Use your HQ to take a disproportionate number of SWs!

I think it's all about how you use command squads. If you leg it down the field with a combat orientated HQ then he will get shot to bits. But if you keep him behind your lines and counter assault that squad of terminators or assault marines that have already been shot up, they usually come up trumps. But yes it's always a good idea to give them some SWs. Thats what i use my platoon command squads for.

Personelly i never try to win CC with my Guard but i take the attidude of if they are being slowed down for a turn or two by a command squad they are not in combat with your valuable platoons which are your important units. I always take powerfists and evisicators for priests and commisars because if they die in most cases the equal iniative will still let them get their attacks off. The other members of the squads are just extra wounds.

the most I've ever done with a command squad is throw in a sanctioned psyker, though hopefully the new commissar models being released will prompt me to try out a commissar.

OMG DO IT! Commissars rule! You need them! And when I say that I mean it! They are great fluff and great fun! They arent too bad in combat either.
