My guard are from Fenris so I am painting a bit of a winter theme with them but also trying to tie it into a space wolves theme. For the fatigues they are based with fenris grey and then I place white around the place and then cover the white but not as densly with warpfiend grey. The flak armout, if they have any (there are some catachans in there too) I base with fenris grey, wash with nightshade blue and then dry brush with white. How would you suggest washing camo? I did try putting base down of fenris grey then washing with nightshade. Then i went over high area with fenris grey again. What happens though s that I place my camo pattern on and then the recessed areas are quite dark and it kind of makes the camo not as bright as it should be for winter. Alternatively if i apply wash after doing my camo do I highlight each individual color that is raised? I have attached photographs below. I am not sure how to resize them, I ave used an image shack url and the tags.

Why do you use Catachans for winter? Wouldnt it be too cold for them?? Nice painting otherwise!

I've found that using pale blues up to whites work best with pale greys worked into the camo. But what really helps most is the base, I love doing bases! For that I suggest using "realistic water" from woodland scenics as the glue for the snow flock, the best flock I found is from gale force 9 and secret weapon miniatures. Just base your dudes like normal and put some snow on, after that I like put a sparse grass in areas to complete the effect

I think the camo is pretty good but I concur that what distracts from the wintery feel is the catachan models & their skin. If they were on fenris they would probably have paler skin.

Not necessarily, pale skin would be derived from a lack of sunlight to human skin, which tans with sunlight, now saying said sun gives off the same UV as our sun, hoping so as humans need it to survive, then they could be tanned, BUT if they lived caves to help them survive the harsh environment they live on then yes, I'd think they would have pale skin. But looking at the fluff for Fenris then his guys are nomads, used to the harsh environment, their skin may be lighter than the norm, I agree, but also very leathery due to the harsh winds
