Greetings fellow Imperial Guard commanders,
I'm new to the world of 40k and I was able to pick up an 800-ish point IG regiment on the cheap. They're completly unpainted and I can't wait to get started on them. The only trouble is that I have ZERO idea what theme I should use!
I'd really like my regiment to look striking on the board, and also not use any of the cliched paint schemes that appear to be somewhat common.
I was thinking about going for a "chaos black" undercoat with "regal blue" uniforms and "skull white" shoulder pads, with detailing done in some bright red color. But I'm not sure how this would turn out.
So how do you think I should paint them?

Hey welcome to the board, first off guessing you've got cadians there. Secondly what fluff have you got for your regiment? I always paint my units for their fluff, e.g. they on a desert world they have yellow/tan and brown schemes/ they on ice worlds it's blue, purple and white. Or if it's my palace guard it's mainly red.
Also can always paint one as a trial, if you like it go on if you don't try another way.

Do you want an American flag army?
I'm just messing with you. That sounds really cool and very striking on the battlefield. It takes the fluff into an aristocratic feel or a pdf feel. I think the fluff is most important when it comes to deciding what your troops wear. What is their fighting style? How are their uniforms made? What type of environments do they specialize in?
Paint your soldiers however you like, but be prepared to defend them with valid and interesting fluff.

Thanks for the advice so far, it's really got me thinking. I imagine my regiment being a rather down on its luck guard unit. I'm thinking about calling them the 666th Terrasulian "Hard Triple Sixers". Of course, Terrasul is a planet of my own creation. They're the unluckiest regiment in the universe. The Hard Triple Sixers are constantly put in insanely lethal situations with no support and very little chance for survival, and are hardly ever resupplied. As a result, their equipment has a real "patched up" look and feels very cobbled together. Another idea is that different squads and units will be colored differently. I mean when you're the unluckiest regiment in the galaxy it's pretty hard to have matching uniforms!

With a ragtag force, consider your bitz. Think about what other models from other armies can lend that really down on there luck feel. If you do it right, you might not even have to use that varied of a paint scheme. In particular, lots of grit, scars and repairs are good for conveying this feeling for your men and tanks Look around on this thread for some inspiration, in particular, Rolling Thunder has a GREAT blog. He calls them the Mercenaries. His early posts might not be that great but as you go further and further they continue to get better and better. I posted the link. commissar.proboards.com/index.cgi?board=picpost&action=display&thread=7214

I like the idea. I want to see a test model and we could give you pointers!
