First, a quick question: I'm completely new to Fantasy and just picked up the Empire codex yesterday. When equipping magic/special items, can you take more than one "named" item in your army?
Army Idea:
I really like the Luther Huss model and his backstory. I have an IG army and it is very neatly pressed and "clean" looking so I want to do something entirely different with my Fantasy army. Therefore I was thinking about starting a small army based around Luther. I am thinking it will look kind of like a veteran crusading army constructed of lots of kit bashed units with all of the bitz mixed up. I want it to look like people from all over the Empire and abroad have flocked to Luther's banner in honour of Sigmar.
That, and peasants who have taken up the call and looted the dead enemy to get their weapons. Mixing "Free Company" bitz in with units like greatswords and state troops to give the army a very gritty sort of look. I can also mix in paint schemes from all over the Empire. I want it to look hodge-podged.
Hopefully the army will include Max number of flangellents, Huss, Warrior Priests, and the like.
What do you all think? I am a good painter and modeller so I think the army will asthetically look good, but what do you all think about the idea?

No, you can only have one of Houdini's Handsome Hat in your entire army. You may have multiple Dispell Scrolls and other "common" magical items. 2. Sounds like a characterful idea. I don't know how well an army like this would do in the current edition, but with the old army book from two editions ago, it played about .500.

No you can't take more than one named item in your army. However there are some ways to somewhat bypass this. If you check both your rulebook and the codex you have and it has a weapon that goes through armor saves and they both have different names then you should be able to equip 2 characters with one each.
Are you sure about dispell scrolls? I was almost certain you could only have one of those in an entire army. However feedback scrolls and other such scrolls are also really insane and funny. Nothing like causing a level 4 wizard to kill himself due to getting really cocky and trying to get off a really awesome spell. You might want to try some of them some time.
I'm not an empire player but certain armies go well with certain tones and paint schemes. The 'free company' look you're going for sounds more like something the bretonnian peasants would do. Ripped and torn clothed dirty peasants with crappy weapons from everywhere. Whereas their knights and possibly even grail knights (though not entirely likely) may have bright colors with all sorts of interesting designs.
For an empire army bright colors is usually the theme for most guys in my opinion. The exceptions are probably flagellants and some bowmen (do they have huntsmen or are those part of the handgunners unit). Anyway if huntsmen are just handgunners then that probably wouldn't work either. You may want to try colors from many different provinces of the empire. If you want to get stuff scavenged from different armies then i suggest getting some bitz from the ogres and possibly giant models. Ogres often wear shields on their shoulders as shoulder pads and gnoblars use some broken shields as their shields. You could also just take stuff from different armies. Maybe your store has a bitz box or maybe other players would be more than happy to share their unused bitz with you.
If you really just want your empire army to look that way you could just take empire and bretonnian models and combine them or just bretonnians and just use them instead.

Yeah i've been playing for 6 months but my knowledge of 40k and my understanding of the rules and tactics has allowed me to advance more quickly in the game. I'm taking on players which are pretty good at the game and beating them. That should mean something just by itself. However yes i'm a noob as far as fantasy is concerned and compared to people that have played for 12 years i'm still sort of a noob as i started 40k about 3 years ago. It doesn't entirely matter though. A lot of the old models in both games used to look like nuts. The model range has vastly improved in the last couple editions which is why old 2nd edition dark eldar were fugly as fornicate. Also female fighters?! My interest has piqued as has my thingy jk.
