I had great success with this on another board; basically I took the Vogen City map from the GW website and invited players to run the regiments assigned to capture it back from orks. Players named the colonels of their regiments, developed their units' "character" (Veteran engineers? Green (but more numerous) infantry? Drop troops?), and chose strategies ("Should I move quickly through Sniper's Alley and risk higher casualties, or move through the ruined Habs at a slower pace?" "Should I concentrate on defending the gate against the ork tank attack, or deal with the Kommandos wreaking havoc in my back line?"). I played the orks, as well as Munitorum supply agents, air support, and the Battle Sisters and Arbites trapped in the city. Not sure yet what the exact parameters will be, but I'm thinking for now I'll accept two dedicated players, each of which will get two regiments to play. Think of these as two characters. As the game goes on and we grow more confident of our ability to juggle the balls, more players with larger units will be allowed. The city and its circumstances are pretty well encapsulated here: www.twoheadeddragon.com/node/807Particularly look at the map and location descriptions. If you're interested, post here and I'll put together an OOC topic.

This isn't a standard RPG. You have a character, but he is a general and is unlikely to see combat (unless you feel like it). You get to control two regiments of your choice:
Infantry (3,000 men) Tank (800 men, 100 Leman Russ) Artillery (700 men, 100 Basilisks)
(I'd recommend at least one infantry each, since this is a cityfight.)
All you know is that you are facing Orks, and you will be facing them from the South (ie, your units will start in the lower left corner of the map). Your job is to take the city away from the orks, who presently holding it and are methodically pillaging it. What units do you require to do this?
When you select your regiments, name them for clarity (also your General). You may give each unit a single unique quality if you wish (Ork Hunters, City-fighters, Recon troops, Drop troops, or whatever you can think of).

Thanks Jarms. This is what iv knocked up!
Overview: The 19th Mechenized infantry 'The City Takers' and 84th Armour 'The City Destroyers' have fought and died for years during this campaing. Now the troops from Oresto, a planet many light years away, are few in numbers and have been boosed by reenforcements from remains of other regiments on world and off world. The 19th are famous for taking back three citys from the Orks in less than two weeks. A fouth would have been taken if not for the storms that bogged down the Chimeras and the 20 ton troop transport trucks. The fourth city, nick named 'Over The Pond' by the infantry was the site where the 84th earned their name. With the 19th cut off, the 84th travelled around the storm, and layed seige to the Ork held city. Basilisk artillery let loose shells day and night for a week, before Leman Russ tanks moved forward to take out any Ork Armour than may be ready for a counter attack. With Hellhound Support, the city burnt, and collapsed from the weight of armour fire power.
Regiment(s):
Oresto 19th Infantry "The City Takers":
1000 men mounted in Chimeras, with a further 1500 in 20 ton trucks. Primary weapons are Las guns, althought morters, flamers, grenade launchers, missle lauchers, and heavy stubbers are common within the regiment platoons.
Oresto 84th Armoured "City Destroyers: Made up of 70 Leman Russ Battle Tanks, 30 Leman Russ Punnishers, and 40 Leman Russ Vanquisher tanks. With a support element consisting of 40 Hydra Flak tanks, 50 Basilisk 30 Medusa tanks. 17 Atlas's are avalable for recovery, while 1 pulls a mobile landing pad, 2 pull Air control trailers, and 1 pulls a trailer holding a single Valkyrie. All Leman Russ are armed with a hull mounted Heavy Bolter, as are the Hellhounds. The Valkyrie is armed with missle pods.
The Valkyrie - Oresto 3001st Squadron - The Loner Once part of a squadron of over 50 aircraft, the air base it opperated from was attacked by Orks and subsequently destroyed and the Valkyrie escaped after giving cover fire to fleeing ground troops. The Valk found the 84th by accident. But with its command lost, the Oresto Commanders desided that they could find use of the Valk. Engineers set to work to build a sutible platform to transport the Valk on land, so it would save aviation fuel, and also build a mobile landing pad. The landing pad was build so it could fold away using the hydrolic legs of damaged Sentinels.
Major Samwel, acting commander of 84th Armour and 19th Mechenized Infantry. Colonel Tanel and his advisors where killed after Gretchin suicide bombers climbed onto the Command Chimera and detonated them selves. With no suvivors from the Command Chimera, Samwel was the next rank senoir.
This young officer is skilled in tank warfair, and had always shown potential as a great leader. Now its his chance to prove it once and for all.
Hope thats ok!

How? You put in 117 tanks PLUS 600 men in Chimeras to a unit that was supposed to have 100 tanks and no more than 800 men... By my reckoning this is at least 1300!

Thanks for your patience, guys. As you'll have noticed, I've added an IC topic for this game. What you'll do now is "place" your units, and give your initial orders. Do you want to send the Oresto 3001st's Valkyrie on a recon run? Bombard Gibbet Hill with Basilisks? Throw the 788th's Armored Fist squads across the river? Have the Corilithian Engineers rebuild the bridge? It's up to you. I strongly recommend caution, as so far you don't know how heavily the enemy shore is held. There could be boomguns on Gibbet Hill, for example - it dominates the area.
Your objectives are the Basilica, the Spaceport and the Governor's Palace. The Spaceport will enable reinforcements and the other two are of sentimental and historical value -- great value. Also, of course, you need to clear the city of orks.
This topic is for you to ask me questions about game mechanics (like, "Can the Leman Russes get through the tunnels?") and to discuss, OOC, what you'd like to do. You'll need to cooperate. Once you've decided what to do ingame, whether it's to fly a commando mission to Gibbet Hill or bombard the 122nd Cadian HQ, you should write orders and reactions (in character) in the IC topic.
Good luck. I'm looking forward to this, and I hope you are too.

Can we use the rail line to our south?
No. Assume the southern end is inaccessible. Easier to run the game that way. You can only move to areas on the map.
and as you stated can the Leman russes fit through the tunnels.
Yes - two abreast if they don't have sponsons, in single file if they do -- and the ones behind won't be able to fire.

The two buildings on friendly side of the river: what condition are they in? I'm going to send guys to explore them. Are they accessible or runes? Just so I know what fluff to write....

Is it too late to join? If not, then here's my idea....Air-Cav for the win! Also, is Air superiority a given, or am I going to have to fight for the skies? For the 17th Air Wing, I do have a lot of machines, but I'm trying to balance it out by making it so that they don't have any infantry.
Kai-Tan Strike Force[/b]
A Strike Force is a term used to describe a collection of men and material formed together for a specific purpose. The Kai-Tan are unique in that individual units are allowed to requisition the equipment they need for a task, within reason, due to the belief that the soldiers in the field know best what they require.
482nd Hell's Bane[/b] Commander: Major Kaikel Xiang Second-in-Command: Captain Kirlia Asis Fighting Strength: About 2500. 250 Attached Valkyries. Overview: The Hell's Bane is the ground/infantry part of a dedicated Air Cav unit, modeled after the famed Elysians. They excel in close combat situations, and in cities, due to the fact that their aerial assets allow them to move much faster, and they are less burdened by a lack of tanks, which are vulnerable in the cramped confines of a large city.
The average trooper is armed with a modified version of Carapace Armor, incorporating several more functions into the design, such as integrated comms and different vision modes (Thermal, Night). For this operation, squad leaders have been authorized to allow troopers in their squad with the proper training to use special assault weapons, such as flamers or grenade launchers. Instead of lasguns, most troopers carry shotguns for stopping power against Orks.
Some squads carry missile launchers for flexibility, but most do not carry heavy weapons in order to stay light on their feet.
The Valkyries are used primarily for troop transport instead of ground support, and are mostly armed only with autocannons to clear a small landing zone for their troops. Due to the nature of the Kai-Tan Strike Force system, some have inevitably been equipped with missiles, extra ammunition, door mounted guns, or the like.
17th Air Wing[/u] Commander: Major Myrkan. Fighting Strength: About 60 functioning aircraft total. Overview: The 17th Air Wing actually consists of a Wing and a small number of dedicated ground-support Valkyries. The Wing itself has 34 older Thunderbolts, and 8 of the newer Lightnings. The remaining 20 consist of Vulture Gunships, armed to the teeth. However, due to the extremely late orders given, the Air Wing does not have proper facilities within close range of the city, and must make do with however many munitions they could fit onto their craft.

You're gonna have to fight me for a spot Kaikel, unless jenburdoo can handle 2 more players. I'm already on standby for now waiting for some room. Ironically I also asked to play an airmobile regiment with attached air support assets

Well, if he lets us both play, then I can switch over to an Engineer/Sapper and Artillery group instead if you want, since I just now noticed we happen to be missing a rather crucial part of a city strike force...

I don't mind additional airmobile troops just think it was funny that the last two people that want to jump on board have very similar forces. More the merrier if we get let in

Question regarding your orders, Jarms and Soap: Who is deployed where? I gather from your orders that you want to spread out all along the east bank of the river, but other than a couple specifics such as Armored Fists investigating Harikon's Gate and the tunnels, I don't know, for example, where the Basilisks are stationed. It might help if you pinpoint the location of the HQ for each of your regiments and of yourselves, as that would presumably be at the center of your "areas of responsibility."

All my forces are spread out on the edge of the river to the north of Harrikons Gate. Artillary and support troops are again to the north, but set back away from the river. And as stated, the chimera mounted troops have got to explore the Gate.
