So I've been bumbling about for my new army, an IG regiment coming from a planet called Mandalusia. Their colour scheme is fortress gray fatigues with golden armour. What I'd like to learn is a good way to paint gold. See, I've been using this guide (the word this is a link, folks) but it feels too bright to me, not subdued enough. Any tips? P.S. my painting "skills" suck and due to availability issues, I can only get black undercoat spray cans.

A guy at my LGC told me how to paint gold, and it works great, first you undercoat (luckily black is best) paint on gold colour (shining gold is best) and then wash in 2:1:1 of Badab black, liche purple and water, and it shades it perfectly, whilst dulling it down quite a bit, it's done on the armour of the first model here Which reminds me to get more pics in that thread...

I paint gold like this: burnished gold over a black undercoat followed by a gryphonne sephia wash. works for me. you can see it here on the 3rd and 4th guys helmet

Thanks for the replies , guys. Spy, maybe I'm dense, but how can you possibly get a 2:1:1 ratio? I've never understood the ratios given =/ Peter, I like the gold, but it's a bit too bright for my tastes, just like the GW tutorial's gold. But I like the minis

Hmm......Well the actual Gold recipes have been dealt with, I'm more concerned about the actual colour scheme....grey and gold.. It could look great....or absolutey tacky .

I took it from Gaunt's Ghosts, the Volpone Bluebloods use(d) it. It's probably not as bad as you think, Cosmic.

I use watered down layers of burnished gold over a boltgun metal base and wash with davlin mud then go over it again very lightly with burnished gold.

I paint Tin Bitz, then Dwarf Bronze, then Shinning Gold. If I want it to look less tacky then I paint the Gold in diagonal strips and as a highlight. Washes are either black or brown.

For a toned down gold, I tend to use scorched brown over a black undercoat, then slowly build up with burnished gold til I get the dullness or brightness I want. Best pic I have of it: For a really dulled down color, I use the same idea, only tack on tin bitz between the brown and gold.

I highly advise you not to use gold as primary color of your armor, it looks ridiculous, its much better used as decorative trims etc. Instead use yellow if you wish for the armor, start with a foundation yellow and give a light yellow wash, then when dry lightly drybrush with a highlight yellow desired.
If you do still decide to use gold for armor, I would start with tin bitz, then lightly bronze, then shinny gold, then yellow wash, then lightly highlight of burnishing gold.

I tried a white and gold scheme for my old SM army back in the day. Turned out terrible. Needless to say I will not try that again. If I do, I need an airbrush for the white so it lays more evenly.

White is not gray though, Kriegeirk. I see your point but I personally am loving the combo.

I was trying to go for an grecco roman feeling. I have no idea what the gray you mentioned is referencing as I was just posting about my experience with gold. Is gray the main color of your armor?

Burnished gold over a black undercoat, wash once or twice with Ogryn flesh, and then lightly highlight edges with Chainmail.
