ok so i just got paid and fancied getting a basilisk to build for the EDF... now im good at making kits, ive made quite a few... and i already know that the instructions are...well... cryptic at best...
so i continued...
mistake 1. on section 2 of the kit build, it totally show that you use the rear part that holds the rear door of the chimera on... this is very wrong! we already know from cosmics build, that this just isnt right, and the small angled panel should be used insted to bridge the gap.
mistake 2. tell me if im being retarded here... but... WHERE THE HELL IS THE HEAVY BOLTER? i have looked at the sprues now 800 times and cannot find a heavy bolter as pictured in the fail instruction.... theres a heavy flamer, but no heavy bolter... is this right? or do i need to look at the sprue another 800 times to find it.
mistake 3. on the model itself is a crank wheel to elevate and lower the gun... why the hell is it on the front of the gun? in a place fully unaccsesable to the crew and to the modeller that wants to wheel it up and down? surely it would make more sence to build the gun rotation reversed so the crew can actually work the thing.
not a mistake but an annoyance. 4 .. the best bit of the kit is the fact it has loads of different stowage items to use however you like... but why oh why does it not have earthquaker shells? surely the basic IG artillery set would include shells to stack up or put on the deck for show.... even empty cases would look cool... but no... not a sausage. even the shadowsword kit has a few shells for the massive cannon, even though it dont have an open crew area to display the shells... dumb i think.... and to top of this annoyance, i just looked over the whole forgeworld website and they have shells for every other artillery peice but not the earthshaker cannon... what a bunch of total jerks.... should i get some battlecannon shells to act as them perhaps? well apart from the DKOK earthshaker cannon, that has a box of them... but they dont sell seperatly... how convenient.
apart from these, i guess the kit is ok... and im quite enjoying converting it... WIP will be up tommorrow in my plog... pretty much changing everything.
ninja out.

The Crank wheel really frustrated me! And the lack of shells is just stupid!!

You buy stuff from GW. This is surprising how?

also... one more thing... there are two angled smallish girders which im imagining connect to the angled rear panel and the gun platform to provide extra strength... i say imagine because theres no mention of these parts in the instructions. non whatsoever.
and lastly... why have they bothered numbering the parts on the sprue if theres no cross refenrence to parts on the instructions? really... i mean ... REALLY?

Number 3 is easily explained. No-one that has ever worked at GW has ever seen a gun (or other kind of firearm) in real life and they all lack even the basic comprehension on how guns work. Don't even get me started on the sillyness of the short barrels on heavy bolters, placements of ejection ports and so on.
For no.4 I might also have an explanation, it depends. I've never seen the new basilisk kit but is that the one that includes the vehicle accessory sprue? You know, the on that they used to include in EVERY IG vehicle box but now decided to sell seperatly? Because if so it was meant to suit all vehicles and I guess there just wasn't room for shells. Sad but understandable. It's one of the best pieces of kit GW ever produced, IMO.

Don't even talk to me about that damn crank wheel... I've built 3 Basilisks and I've managed to mess that thing up every time XD

i agree on what you said about the vehicle assesory sprue... its fantastic... and the fist time ive opened a kit to find the elusive track guards inside.... also the jerry cans, large linen wraps, shovels, ammo box, feul drum, tow cable and the gucci lasgun with the foldup skeleton stock.... even the guards heads are better than the standard cadians cos they got the comms headsets which look great....
im gonna assume they dont sell this sprue seperatly... that would be asking alot.

I think they do sell the accessory sprue seperately, it will be under IG bitz on the GW site if they do.

They do sell the vehicle accessory sprue separately though its under W40k/Armies/Imperial Guard/Bitz section of the games workshop website.
Shostak you just beat me.
Also the new kit doesn't give you a set of the old heavy weapon team sprue for the crew.

yeah i guess im gonna have to make my own crew... i got plenty of spare troops to use... think im gonna use 3 on that platform... gunner, two loaders.
oh yeah, just found the vehicle assesory sprue... £8.20 ... quite alot really for what it is. although worth it just for those two guardsman headset heads.

The tank accessory kit can be bought from bitz shops and ebay for a reasonable price.
As for the instructions, it's been a while since I built a Basilisk but when I did the instructions seemed very detailed. That was back in 2nd ed though

Also the new kit doesn't give you a set of the old heavy weapon team sprue for the crew. Old heavy weapons team? Which one would that be? I've ever only bought a single basilisk and that was ages ago when I played orks (back when they were still good). There were some old metal loaders for the basilisk but that was back like when GW still cared about their customers.

Better question: Why do you complain about my making an observation that GW are a fairly rubbish company? Because we all know it, and we don't want to be reminded of it. Especially when we can't find any other game system people are willing to play in our area, so are stuck with GW and their kits. Reds

Reds It's so true, especially in the States. It's hard enough to find people in your area who game in general let alone try different rules settings, games, etc.

Have you cisudered outting your cock in it? fukcin booze. I second that? I also think the Basilisk is a poorly done kit, even by GW's standards. That elevation wheel, already mentioned as being illogically placed, is free moving on the ones I have. That makes no sense whatsoever. On any real piece of machinery, artillery notwithstanding, the wheel would be fixed and the track would be the only thing moving against the cog; at worst against a secondary cog. Still, continue the rant! Should be interesting.

I have to agree on this as well. The first time I built one of these kits I totally botched it because I decided the instructions were probably correct. They were not.

If you think this is bad....... You have obviously never observed someone attempting to put together a WoC Hellcannon But then again, I have heared about troubles with to Basalisk before..... Everyone point at Matt Ward..... Its his fault, He butchered fluff, he invented HIV and now he has been made responsible for terribley made GW kits! Blame Matthew Ward, Blame Matthew Ward, With his beedy little eyes and flapping head so full of lies, Blame Matthew Ward, Blame Matthew Ward, He's not even a real human anyway.... Grey knights could have been amazing or great, it's so true, Instead he trashed the fluff like a sledghammer to a sprue.... Should we blame GW, or blame the Ultra Marines? Heck No! Blame Matthew Ward, Blame Matthew Ward..... *Bows down infront of applauding members of the IGMB and walks off stage* P.S. I'm sorry for Hi-Jacking this thread btw Ashotninja ^.^
