Hey guys I just wanted to know what everyone thinks and, if they use, combined infantry squads, I'm starting out and found them good. Love to hear your thoughts on this one

Combined squads are, in general, excellent. In KP missions, they are a tool for point denial with the drawback of being large, unwieldy, and forced to target one enemy instead of several. The drawbacks don't ever really outweigh the benefits. They are one of the better tarpit units in the game, when outfitted with one or more commissars, because they can get a solid array of weapon choices and are overall very cheap. Since you can decide whether or not to use combined squads at the outset of the battle, the ability is pretty much straight win. There will be situations where you should consider not using it, but generally it is a good idea to have several infantry squads fitted out with combined in mind.

I don't think I've ever run my Platoons separately unless I was mounting up, or occasionally peeling one Squad off as a Screen for the rest. The ability to put more ablative dudes in front of your Special/Heavy Weapons, share Force Multipliers like Commissars and Orders, and need to take 8-10 Casualties to force your first Shooting Morale Test is pretty awesome.
I generally group up Shooty Platoons in 2-3 Squad Blobs, and Assault Platoons in 3-4 Squad Blobs.

I've started to run a 20 man blob that guards my overlord while he heads out to kill or capture stuff. Not too large but not so small that it gets wiped out by a dred with a flamer in one swell swoop.

One thing I've learned about blob squads is that you must have a Commissar in there or they will get massacred in CC. Although 6th helps (overwatch).

Although 6th helps (overwatch). 6th also opens up another option: You can put Allied Characters in there instead of the Commissar. With a careful pick, they can do as well or better. I've been running a Rune Priest in one of my Blobs instead of a Commissar, and LD10+ATSKNF seems to be working out even better than LD9+Stubborn+Re-Roll. Lysander also seems like a good option, since he provides Stubborn and can tank Anti-Infantry Firepower for days. And is one of the best Challenge Beatsticks in the Game if something does make it into Assault. He's basically a Counter-Assault Unit all by himself. Just don't run both in the same Blob. The way Summary Execution is worded right now, the Commissar can kill off your Allied Character if you fail a Morale Test.

thanks for all the advice. Do people have 20 or 30 man squads?

30 are the best IMO.

How dare you fail the Emperor, summary Execution" - From one really bad ass or really dead Commissar. I guess it depends on how cheap you plan on going. How muc h does Lysander cost? Does he cost more then the unit. And if you really want to add an Allied character to a really large unit, why not try Conscripts? But Combined Squads + Commissar(s) = win.

Lysander is slightly cheaper than 3 Squads with Power Weapons and Meltaguns. He can also, on average, soak up about as much Bolter Fire on his own as that Platoon can.
I don't see any point to adding him to Conscripts. In a regular Platoon, he helps protect the Power Weapons and Special Weapons, and the bulk of bodies can help protect him if necessary. With Conscripts, there's nothing there for him to help protect, they just become a Lysander Delivery System, and there are better options for that.
