The barebones infantry squad is cool because of it's sheer Napoleonic silliness.
*Has a vague urge to try 6th Ed. Damn you all.*

Damn you all.* I'm already assembling a white stripes platoon, a squad of grenadier's sounds pretty cool after this thread. {not to mention a site quicker to prepare. } ;-) The thought of throwing a few more blast templates down range gives me a warm fuzzy feeling right in the khackles.

Well, if we are still chatting about this my feelings are pro-grenade launcher. As far a optimal points use goes cheaper infantry squads are probably better but I like it tactically. You might have a situation where a chimera is advancing into an area held by two of your squads, perhaps it is delivering troops to contest an objective. If your units can hurt the chimera then your opponent must consider this and react accordingly. If your squads aren't blobbed but are separated by a short distance the chimera may have to position itself carefully to avoid side armour shots or it might be impossible to avoid.
There are other situations where being able to maneuver a Str 6 weapon could be used to manipulate your opponent perhaps beyond the actual threat of the grenade launcher.
It also isn't completely fair to say that a 10 point guardsman with a grenade launcher can be compared to two 5 point guardsmen. You may have points spare but not enough for another full squad and you can't buy it in part it might also be undesirable to have an additional squad instead of a grenade launcher for every squad if having too many men will crowd you on the table.

I am reviewing my use of grenade launchers - I recently did not field any in a game vs Empty and found that a few S6 would have gone a long way.
Not sure if I would have taken them had I re-considered my list though - I'd probably opted for Lascannons!
That said, I have found grenade launchers really useful in previous games, especially among CCS.
Jury's still out...

If you've got that many Points left, you can afford to start buying Plasmaguns.

Plasma is always tasty and fun but you might not have the models, you might prefer a small spread of S6 to a single plasma gun or literally just have the five points, or you might not like the idea of spamming out such a rare weapon.

...or you might not like the idea of spamming out such a rare weapon. Yeah, fluff wise that carries weight in my book. A guardsman is going to feel a lot more secure with a weapon that isn't a volatile plasma gun. (Not to mention the guy next to him) WestRider obviously knows what he is talking about. No sarcasm. Even from my position it is easy to see that his expertise and prestige is difficult for veteran 40k players to challenge. Not to mention the confidence some of you have expressed once he has revised your army list's. That is a brand of reliability more than a few of us can depend upon to increase the competitiveness of our hobby. He's shown there are a lot of pleasing alternatives to the GL. But he hasn't said it sucks, and WestRider is not a 40k player who is afraid to call an ork an ork. If such a critical player is even willing to admit the Granade Launcher is mediocre at best... then, *gasp* dare I say it? Wouldn't that at least make it "Good~ish" {is that even a word?} for us moderate to blah players?
