Sounds like GW is killing off Finecast, turning models that are in it over to Forge World, and is going to be going all plastic in the mid-future... BoLS article.I'm glad. I've only had one or two Finecast models that have not had some sort of defect that was easy to repair. Hopefully FW will do a better job with these models than regular GW did, and GW will be getting plastic replacements out quickly.

I just need to get my hands on a Kharne and a Fabius Bile (and maybe an Ahriman) before they get resculpts then, I guess. I have to say, I've been happy with all 7 of the Finecast Models I have, and my Skumgrod's had few problems as well.

Who wants to bet there's going to be a price increase when the new plastic models drop?

Reds : inevitably..
My thoughts here is whether this shows that GW do respond to their market, or is it just the painting studio getting as fed up as the rest of us!

Who wants to bet there's going to be a price increase when the new plastic models drop? Reds I think the answer to this question is the same as the answer to the following question: "Does a bear poop in the woods?" *Yuri voice* "IS BEAR!!!" Personally, though, I am kind of amped at the prospect for plastic Aspect Warriors and Harlequins, as out of the Fine castcrap Eldar stuff I bought over the summer (Harlies, Dark Reapers, Striking Scorpions, and Swooping Hawks) only the Swooping Hawks didn't have major problems. The Scorpions were so bad I called GW customer service to complain and they sent me a replacement pack that wasn't quite as bad, but still not perfect.

horray! my dark eldar wracks were pretty bad, though they were probably the 1st waves of finecast, my tau farsight was pretty clean with minimal problems.

Jesus Christ, they're charging $30 for a plastic kit with essentially no customization options?! It's not even a particularly good model...

Yeah the direction they are going with this range of plastics is terrible. I actually really appreciate how cleverly the models are designed to fit together (I picked up Saurus on my way back from an IGMB meetup when they released the first two) but the way they go together like a 3D puzzle looks like it reduces the conversion potential a lot. It is weird that the first models in the series haven't had a big price increase. I think the Saurus was £8 at the time and now it is £9, but the new models are coming in at such high prices. Also if you want to rage about it even harder I recall people complaining that that space marine was essentially the AoB captain with a different gun and a head swap option so you could compare the value and pricing of the two models while choking a teddy bear or some such.

Give them some credit, at least they also changed the shoulder pad so it wasn't Ultramarines... But doing that is apparently super hard, so they had to triple the price.

I just don't get the sense behind the lopsided pricing at all. It is like they're using a dart board.
But getting back on topic my feelings are that metal going away wasn't particularly good but that finecast going away will also be bad. For all the downsides of the actual materiel (weak and can melt easily) it seemed like they were ironing out most of the problems with quality for the new casts, the ones that weren't designed to be used with metal; and that they were exploiting the new medium to design and pose figures that wouldn't have worked in metal.

Hit the nail on the head right there. Finecast started off with a few hiccups, but it's got better and the quality started to get better......I like to compare it to My Chemical Romance, they actually did ok to begin with, then they actually got fantastic with Black Parade, but despite the improvement it was cool to hate them but no one seemed to know why.....exactly the same with Finecast.

more likely they want to get rid of the character racks in store to make space for expanded army ranges in the future. but yeah there are a couple of chars I would like before any possible change.
I have to say apart from the odd bobble etc I have not had any problems with finecast, I probably have around 30 figures in finecast.

Finecast was always intended to be a stop gap. They've said several times since they really kicked up their game with their Plastics around the start of 3rd Ed that the eventual goal was 100% plastic. Finecast got jammed in because the price of tin suddenly skyrocketed and made pewter infeasible, and they didn't have the time/money to switch completely over to plastic at that point, while metal to resin is a relatively easy switch.
Why they went with such a garbage resin, I do not know, when they had all that resin casting experience right there at Forge World, but that's the story as I've been able to piece it together from various statements and things that were let slip.

Just a thought - does any of the pricing relate to a cost per point factor... I've wondered this a few times as characters invariably get priced high along with elite units etc while troops seem to be kept relatively cheap...
I have 1 finecast, I like the fact that its not metal but prefer plastic or FW resin.
I'm not buying much these days and the further GW go with their prices the more feasible it becomes for independent traders to enter the market - keep it up GW!

Haha, yeah Treadiculous. I'm currently painting Copplestone Castings miniatures, as well as West Wind ones. All possible thanks to the funds I save by not buying G(ross) W(aste) products.

I think it's less about cost per Point* as it is that Models that any given person is only going to buy one or two of are priced far higher than troops that people are going to want a ton of, because they can't make the setup costs up on volume in the same way. *Tho there does seem to be some of that. Compare the price per Model from Gaunts/Guardsmen/Orks through Grey Hunters/Tac Marines up to GK Strike Knights

^ Yeah they admitted to this in the white dwarf interview; someone only needs 1 captain and/ or librarian, to take marines as an example. The new librarian isn't so bad, but there isn't much you can do with it conversion wise. I wanted to put a helmeted head in the torso instead of the bearded head but there wasn't space in there and I didn't want to stretch/ chop into such an expensive model so I left it as is, minus the shoulder flying baby. I got lucky for my birthday; my girlfriends son got me a Stalker and the new librarian This months white dwarf has a sm librarian conversion using bitz from the sternguard and grey knight kits to make an awesome looking librarian; it would cost a LOT more doing it that way...

If y'all remember back in the spring I converted my Fireblade from the stock derpy-face-brandishing-bonding-knife mini into something much cooler just by sticking a Firewarrior helmet and a Pathfinder arm onto him in place of the stock bits, and finished it off with a little liquid GS. While I'm not crazy about the one pose character minis, with a little bit of effort they can be turned into something neat.

If you have a decent bitz box or can beg parts from friends, just make your own plastic versions of whatever it is you need. Most of us have made plastic IG special character versions for their armies (Marbo leaps to mind), and making your own tech marine or libby out of plastic isn't that hard. You'll probably end up with something cooler and with more variety than the GW snapkits. Reds

I wasn't even going to get the Fireblade, until I saw the clamshell at Victory, looked at it closely and said "Hmm... This mini does have potential to look good if the derpy bits are excluded..." So I decided to get it as a base for the conversion, since the body armor and cloak are somewhat special compared to the bog-standard Firewarrior. The guys at Ineptus Astartes were pretty impressed when they saw it, and thought it was much better than the stock mini.
