I love my IG army. I love the lore, models, and play style however, we IG players are suffering a slump of being a non competitive army in 7th ed. We are not the worst army but, we are not winning big tournaments. What do you see in our army that is making us non effective? I see two flaws that has effected me as a player and my army the most.
1: Special rules bubble: I see often that the top competitive armies have multiple special rules that work together or stack. They also have units with very strong special rules they automatically come with that our army does not have (chapter tactics, drop pods, reanimation, invulnerable saves,...)
2: Flexibility: We have units that are really good at one thing and one thing only. That being said it means when we build a list there is really only one way to play it. Other armies have units that can play multiple roles from the same list. Because they can do this they have redundancy built into the list which is vital when facing multiple types of armies.
So what do we have that is Competitive? the Wyvern has great special rules but is only effective vs. infantry and occasionally monstrous creatures. The Vendetta is a good flyer but not great when you look at the marines flyers or the amount of skyfire available to other armies (Tau). Only specific Leman Russ variants are effective but the big strength of them (squadrons) I feel is ineffective due to the cheapness of haywire/grav style weapons available to armies (not to mention the amount of Alpha Strike units that makes our heavy armor worthless.) Scions are cheap deepstrike throw away units but when you compare their price to space marines in a drop pod they become very limited. The guardsman is our best unit but, all the guardsman does is act as a speed bump so our other units can do something before they are killed. People will say that our ability to issue orders makes us powerful but I think they are ineffective. If you play against anyone even relatively experienced knows that they can remove our ability to issue orders normally on turn one or two because of how squishy we are (they also gain kill the warlord every game because of the squishy factor.)
Sorry to be so negative in this post but I am sure some of you have noticed these problems as well. The part that worries me is I don't see these issues being fixed in future editions or codex's. I will always love the IG and continue to play with them, I just wish there was a way for us to play for more than just fluff.
