Today GW announced 9th Edition in a livestream event.
Highlights - Changes to Melee: Everyone swings at once, some units will still have "Strike first" rules. - New primaris bikes and melee intercessors - Changes to terrain rules - More command points - Command point rewards for only playing one army - Lots of big releases for Necrons, including a new troop box. - Vehicles can still shoot when in melee - Some guns will get max hits against "hordes" - Grey Knight Primaris inbound.
There's an FAQ floating around too, but feel free to post anything else you guys have heard.

Very happy for necrons and sisters becoming a more prominent part of the game. Though we'll probably see another marine codex around the corner.
I watched the announcement on twitch and was personally a bit disappointed. Terrain and vehicle rules look good but I was hoping to see more new models. The 40k app will be great though. Trailer was good and I'm hopeful about the new rules. I have a horrible feeling the "loyal 32" spam might see us getting a rough deal. Fingers crossed I'm just being unnecessarily negative.
I guess my problem is I keep holding out for something lost and the damned/traitor guard related or at least a bit of guard itself but I guess I'm a bit foolish really. I tend to get more excited about Necromunda announcements nowadays.

Full disclosure, I was putting out fires at work so could only rely on second-hand reports. The 40k app will be great though. I admire your optimism. I feel like they'll release a paid app and then send a cease and desist to Battlescribe. We'll see if it's actually better, though. I think we'll see more stuff for all the factions being released over time, it might just take a year or so. It sounds like they're solving the Loyal 32 by giving you more command points if you take from one book, apparently on the premise that removing the need for a CP battery will remove the Loyal 32. I personally think they'll end up having to use a stick as well as a carrot to get people to stop this, and adding more CP feeds the larger problems of Strategems not being especially well balanced and making some combos or factions auto-takes. Edit: I'm probably picking up those sword & board Primaris, the shields look awesome.

That trailer for 9th is amazing!
I’m with Reds, the new Primaris stuff is exactly what the range needed, Grim Dark!
I’m a little apprehensive about what the changes to tanks and new blast weapons will have on the Swarm.
Sounds like it’s more of a tidying up exercise and not a full reboot like we had with 8th.
There’s a Q&A session on Tuesday so we’ll get more meat on the bones.

Trailer is great. Perfect for grabbing the attention of potential new hobbyists and delighting everyone else. I think gauss flayers death is my favourite part of it.
Yeah looks kinda like a 8.5. Just hope the app has a nice neat way of collecting up a lot of the rules and data so you don't have to truck around a load of books everywhere. I lost track of the all the updates with 8th. How that'd work I haven't a clue. But yeah I do feel sorry for the battlescribe team.
I'm really liking the new necrons models, especially some of their weird spindly walkers and the warriors. Tempted to get a horde of them. I'm interested to see what starter sets pop up. With the attention sisters are getting it'd be nice to see a version of them with them against the necrons rather then marines. Unlikely but I can dream. Marines are nice, especially the sword and shield guys. But yeah we got some more ultramarines...

Maybe I'm just turning into a bitter old fart.. but for me 8th edition has been the least least enjoyable out of all the ones I played. It's still kind of fun, but I've had nowhere near as much fun as I had in 5th/6th.. so I'm happy to see it go. I'm just not convinced the changes are going to be for the better; it seems to me that the aim is to dumb the game down as much as possible to make it easier to pick up, which makes sense from a business perspective.. but it feels like it is taking most of the actual strategy out of the game. I still have a little bit of hope that 9th might salvage the game for me, but we'll have to wait and see I guess. One opinion that is old farty for sure; I don't like the 'hip' language they wrote the faq and announcements in.

Consensus in my small 40k group seems to be that 5th was the "best" edition, but 8th was pretty good in the Index phase when there was moderate parity.
We'll have to see when more info comes out, but this sounds like an "8.5" update so far. Will be interested to see how it shakes out.

I haven't really played enough 8th to know what its like, I've refereed a number of games between my son and his mate, though these have been fairly small skirmishes and the "dumbed down" rules woked in those situations, though I did notice recently that I was apllying 5th edition cover rules to the game albeit these were becoming -1 or -2 save modifiers. kinda worked and I still think that its preferable to the almost arbitrary 'not in cover unless in area terrain' sort of thing that 8th applies.
I also miss rear armour, it took a lot for me to get my head round that!

I’ve really enjoyed 8th!
I’m hoping they don’t mess with the core rules too much. Sure it’s simple but it’s so much more bloody!
Though like Treads said, the cover rules as they are definitely need to be addressed.
I’m hoping that my ruins, craters and trenchworks all act in a different and varied way.
It’s the Q&A tomorrow so we can hopefully get some more information.

Yeah I'd agree with that. The initial index flutter was great, along with the guard codex. I lost track around the time of the vigilus and the chapter approved books. I still go by the missions in the rulebook.
Don't worry nutty I had a proper old fart moment. Ended up right grumpy. Eye of terror global campaign was one of my favourite times. That was either 3rd or 4th edition from what I remember.

Well the Q&A is making me a lot more excited. They went over terrain having more purpose. Tagging them in a certain way fe ‘obscure’ ( blocking line of sight even if there are windows) with also a footprint around it.
Spending cp to put units in reserve.
Giving monsters equal pewpew as tanks. They specifically mentioned nids here being scary to fight.
A revision of overwatch and also Introducing stratagems for punishing units retreating from yours.
Also being released from the detachment optimising CP cage. Depending the size of the army, everyone starts with the same CP. Which means we can run whatever we want.

I agree judcottrell, lots of good things coming our way. Fingers crossed they have implemented them well. The CP cage in particular looks good, though the "buying" of extra detachments means I am having to rethink how I serve up my main guard army. I have plenty of each type apart from fast attack where I have none. Might have to finally convert up the rough riders I was planning and get a hellhound or 2.
Also the new starter set is meant to appear on Saturday. Might just end up getting the mid sized one if they continue on with the 3 box sizes.

Maybe get yourself some Sentinels? They're one of my favourite models from the whole Guard range!!!

I probably would cos I do love an armoured sentinel if it was one of my other smaller guard armies. But my main guys are ww1 themed and slightly low tech so I've written them off thematically for them. Hellhounds would be quite fun for them though, especially the chemical weapon one.

There's been a few 'low tech' counts-as options for the sentinel like the scylla, or buggies with heavy weapons. It's more work than a sentinel from a box, but they could be a fun addittion to your force. Hellhounds are also cool though.

Good idea, should've thought of that. Might go looking at some tankettes and covert them up for the job.
Also go check GW website as the starter set is up.

Can't wait for the Indomitus box! Apparently it was made with us vets in mind!!
My brothers collect Primaris and Necrons so the box will be of great use to us!
Might try and get some bikes and the meltagun dudes for my boy's Space Wolves.

I'm loving the creepier neuron models. The new warriors, the super slender priest guy, the hunched bodyguards and the tall spindly things. Makes me want to start an army.
I'll probably wait until a mid sized box set (hopefully) comes out. That is unless a friend of mine wants to go halves with me and take the marines.
