I'm thinking about starting a small nid army, as a second one to break up my periods of painting a billion little men with a billion little aliens. Maybe a 500 point army to start. Any suggestions?

Yes. You need to start with termagaunts and a tyrant. If i field a 500 point army mine consists of a tyrant, a fex, a ravener, and 2 squads of termagaunts. It's devestating!

Numbers, numbers numbers.....in such a small game that it what you have to focus on. don't worry about to many upgrades just fit in as many as possible. If you can i reccomend to put in some genestealers. They can be very deadly in CC. I used to take warriors as my HQ, that seemed to give you a few more models as well.
You might even find it worth while boosting it up to a 1000 pts as soon as you can.

Maybe a Broodlord and stealers if you are looking for numbers...

I think that stealers are a bit expensive for a 500pt game personally...they are the choice for bigger games though.

Well, yes... but I was trying to have him head for using just the Brood lord and his little pack, but use Hormies and Termies for troops. I didn't mean for him to take stealers as troops, that is too expensive... Of course I also don't own a single stealer so who am I to say he should...

I know where you are coming from but I also think that for a 500pointer, that some warriors would be cheaper and therefore get more numbers for the gaunts.
I am sometimes really shocking for not explaining myself so please excuse that...i should have posted this in my last one.

How many warriors are we talking about, the base three? I like warriors, but sometimes they can be very weak...

With the synapse being a little thing to worry about i'd take 6 (1 shooty, 1 cc orientated)

Or just take one group of three and give them wings...

I jotted a few things down....
If you take 2 units of 3 warriors, 1 with rending claws and sything talons and the other with 1 venom cannon and 2 deathspitters and toxin sacs. That is 6 models, 2 units of synapse with the capability of glancing vehicles and with rending and +1 attack for the talons. Compare that to a Brood Lord and the minimum 5 genestealers with no upgrades.
According to my calculations there are nearly the same cost. So, IMO, having 2 units with twice the capability is in the better interest of such a small game.
The other options are if you take 1 unit of warriors with wings...you will need to have a HQ (as the warriors are now FA) in which you could take a broodlord + retinue (which will cost nearly half the 500 points with the warrior unit) or a tyrant which i think is to expensive after upgrades anyway.

the tyrant 'may' gain his points back but keep in mind that with the synapse rule that he WILL be one of the first ones targeted...

I've played tyranids for two years. I love them. I run a CC army. When you collect nids make sure you know if you want to shoot. or if you want to assualt. (tyranids have a insane WS so I recommend assualting.) Start out by buying a Tyrant. Equip him with either 2x twin linked devorers. Or 2x Scything Talons. Will work wonders for you. If you pick Scything talons make sure to add wings to him. Then buy two boxes of guants. That should get you started. to fill out the 500 points add in maybe a brood of genestealers. ill post my list here.

Hormaguants-208 (I&S) x16
Hormaguants-208 (I&S) x16
Genestealers-160 Extended Carapace x8
Genestealers-160 Extended Carapace x8
Genestealers-160 Extended Carapace x8
Heavy Support
Zoanthropes-195 All WB all Synapse
Carnifex-213 Enhanced Senses Extended carapace reinforced chitin Bonded exoskeleton Barbed strangler venom cannon Spine banks
61 models 71 wounds 1500 points
My guants are very expensive but they rape things. They are most all close combat oriented. I also won a tournament with this list. Those guants are quick. You can assualt 2nd turn (1st if your uber lucky) Once you block his firing lines and get him in CC hes done. the only person who has ever posed a problem to me is Chaos.

That is a nice 'Nid list, but I reckon you go up againts a Guard army with a good set of Doctorines, Some good Troops, some heavy Armour, it might pose a slighty bigger problem than Marines.
But it is a good 'Nid list, I like it, I want to fight it

My IG army would deal with this threat nicely.. but only because most of my force deep strikes so I would just deep strike with lots of flamers and such.. drop a few sentinals, add aa couple of hellhounds and lemans.. ready to rock and roll mate.. other than that yes it is a very nice armylist.. though you might be a few models short of being truely effective againest all comers..
