I dont have the nid codex on me but when flicking through it i noticed a ripper swarm was 10 points (i think)... but that didn't seem to matter how many bases you took (3 or 10?).
The biomorphes were per charged per base... so you can take quit a few bases for 10 points, and just dont upgrade them... or am i reading it wrong?

pretty sure it costs 10 points per base, but now you have mem wondering so I am going to check it out myself.
-edit- ok so in the book it says that a ripper swarm costs 10 points and a swarm is made up of 3 to 10 ripper bases
so yeah I guess you could read that as you pay ten points total for the entire swarm reguardless of how many bases, but wouldn't that also mean you only get the single statline for the entire swarm? so, A3 and W3 and thats all.
I'll still be paying 10 points for each base because that still is what makes the most sense to me.

A swarm is mounted on a base so a ripper swarm is on 1 base. If you had a large swarm you would need more than 1 base but it is 10 pts a swarm which is a base so 10pts a base which means 30-100pts plus biomorphs.

That is at the same time the best, and most obvious explanation, i have received (i asked on a nid forum too).

Are rippers even worth it any more? With swarms no longer counting as scoring troops, do they still have a place somewhere in a nid army? I'm a non-Tyranid player, by the way, so if the answer is obvious please excuse my ignorance

Its a cheap unit with a lot of wounds. They make a good speed bump I guess, as long as you aren't playing annihilation.

Theyre good for assault support, tying up units and providing cover for gaunts, other than that theyre pretty w*nk
If youre ever against them whip the flamers out and dish the hurt, or some good barrage helps too.

They're worth it. If you can get them in base to base with a unit, consider it tied up for most of the game, even if the rippers don't win the combat.

Regardless of their cover save, they are a great anti-personnel weapon.
They also can be instant death'd easily.

Ask a Necron player- swarms make good tar pits in sufficient numbers.
Don't send them against specialized CC troops like Daemonettes or Howling Banshees, as you'll be ripped to shreds.
Infiltrate or Deep Strike close to heavy weapon squads and tie them up in CC. HW Squads, Havocs, Dark Reapers- take their big guns out of the game equation with a 100-odd point unit.

Swarms to me are just like Conscripts for guard. They operate a little different but they are cheap and can easily get in your opponents way and be annoying.

Swarms can provide Cover Saves to regular Units, just not to MCs or Vehicles.
Rippers got hammered pretty badly by the change to the No Retreat rules and the fact that Troops Choices are generally at a premium for Units that are actually Scoring. Especially against Units with one or more Attacks at S6 or greater (So, basically every Imperial or Chaos Marine Squad with it's PowerFist Vet), they just melt away due to the extra hits from No Retreat.

In any case we shouldn't be posting point costs. Thanks for remembering this in your future posts. [/color]
