So a Gaunt (Attacks:1) armed with a Devourer (Assault 2x) gets 2*1=2 Shots each Turn. On a Warrior or Carnifex (each with Attacks:2), the same gun gets 2*2=4 Shots. A Tyrant (3 Attacks) gets 2*3=6 shots!
The Rate of Fire paragraph (third Paragraph on Pg. 30 of the Nid Dex) explains this as well.

This means that giving a tyrant an implant attack (I think that's what it's called, the one that gives it +1 attack) and then as many devourers as possible, would make it the shootiest damn bug you ever saw! But, I have no idea if that's even legal. I only know a bit about 'nids from my friend's who play them

But if you give it a pair of devourers it becomes a death machine - 12 s5 twin linked re-roll wounds shots!

Implant is for cc too, if the attack is successful, & the armor save is failed- The attacked takes two wounds for each wound suffered.
Nothing in the Codex: Tyranids adds a shot without taking away the others. x2 TL Devourers (w/living ammo) are the most shots you can get. Re-roll hits and wounds!
BTW Those friends of yours aren't reading their Codex. Next time- just ask "Where does it say you can do that?"

I understand. I have a Raven Guard army for the very same reason. Now my Brother loves WH40k and is paintig up an Ork army.
Whenever my Dad talks about visiting he says he wants a re-match. He's really taking a liking to the RG army I tossed together.
Tyranids are way fun. Have you ever played as the Tyranids?

I find the mantra kill it with fire comes in handy here. 3 Outflanking Hellhounds for the win here.
Last time I took this against the resident stealer "outflank of death" list nid' player i owned his flanking force. I literally outflanked his outflankers! ;D
