I'm a complete newb player, so I've been reading and re-reading the rule book and IG codex.
I love the idea of the demolition charge, but am beginning to wonder how easy it is to use.
The blast rules say the center hole of the blast template must be placed over the model base, no part of the blast template may graze a friendly model and the weapon must be within range.
Given the size of the template and the range of the demo charge, means that an enemy model needs to be between 5" and 6" inches away. Or an enemy unit needs to be less than 12" away before movement.
So, are special weapon teams armed with demo charges difficult to use?

The radius of the pie plate is 2.5". So, you could be pretty close. The question is: how ballsy are you about tossing something that can scatter back at you and insta-kill you? I have a few. Well... one right now, but I want to have two or three. I'm talking about demo charges here, by the way...
So, they're not hard to use. But, it's a roll of the dice to see if it's too much for the little plastic man to handle.

Ah, I thought the radius was 5", not the diameter. Guess I should look at the template!
Okay, so not as bad. Still, need to be within 12", but the range is not as tight as I thought.

With in 12" at the start of the turn, and yes with in 6" before shooting.

Um... ah. You're including movement?

Well, I can hope that my opponent moves a unit within 6" of my demo team, but that just seams unlikely.

Who cares if it scatters back? As long as a lot of stuff goes BOOM! Muahahahahaha!

With a demolition charge, the tactic is "GO BIG OR GO HOME." The rewards of a S8 AP2 large blast weapon are too good not to risk killing your own men.
I've watched terminator squads disappear with the proper application of demolition charges. It is fun and a half.

The demo charge is an effective weapon if it manages to get close enough, in assault range. That said, the unit your firing at probably won't survive the blast but if it does, be prepared to be assaulted if it doesn't run away.

I'm pretty sure you can charge after using a demo charge.

Demo charges are great fun, but you have to keep the guys alive long enough to actually use them...talk about fire magnets. Cover is your friend.

They do come with three ablative guys in the "cheap" SW squad. Three guys isn't a lot, but you can always stick them in a chimera and do molotov drive-bys...
