I wanted to play with wood elves, what to start with, and to add later?
(want to have a defensive skirmish army)

Well, do you want to play Elves only, Forest Spirits only, or a combination of the two?
Each offers a slightly different play style, though straight elves lend themselves best to skirmish forces.

And Forest Spirits are ridiculously overpowered.
Go Elf, or I will be cross. Good way to start is with one or two boxes of Glade Guard, they can be both Scouts or Guards, which both are solid and good core units. Also you might want to get some Glade Riders for the plastic convenience, but if you're dedicated you should get a neat unit of Eternal Guards, they're lovely.

Not really. Forest Spirits are expensive and really lack the options and flexibility of the whole list.
I just don't use them because I wanted the challenge of an Elf only list.

Dryads are some of the best core units and the game and rather cheap for their stats and special rules.. Treemen are just plain annoying and wrong, and Branchwraiths with Netlings makes me gag. Maybe I'm a bit biased though, when I actually played WHFB vanilla Wood Elves were the most cheesy army around along with Dwarves, so I've kind of learned to loath them.
