So, I got one as a gift. Anyone have any thoughts on the proper usage of such a device? And thoughts on the rules for the artillery unit type?

Drop it in a sock and use it to hit people who cheat?

It's the ultimate shooty artillery piece. I mean 4 blast markers, 3 types of shells, funky tech-marines in servo dude harness.. what more could you want?
Devastator squads used to be the best, until 5th edition improved cover saves. Airburst shells ignore cover, so Thunderfire cannons are the new static marine shooty list weapon of choice.

They make me cry as they are nigh impossible to make.
They are an excellent asset against say guard as 4 S6 Ap5 blast templates rip right through platoons.

No they're not. The key with big metal models is drilling and pinning, as well as cleaning mould lines from the metal pieces, and cleaning the flash off. All you really need is a modelling knife, or some files, a pin vice and some paperclips, or other, thicker steel wire.
My techmarine in full servo-harness didn't even take an hour to assemble. He's so solid you could play football with him, and destroy your foot.

You are obviously not in the situation I am in.

If you can't do it, send it to me. I'll assemble it (for fun) and send it back to you.

The real problem is trying to bend the metal pieces back into proper shape, as GW fails. I've seen an epic QC fail example with an exorcist... This thing has some warp to it as well...

I once took a pair of pliers to a killakan that would not fit together.

Yes, you're all very clever. But I have no idea what to do with this thing. I'm unclear on the unit rules.

Well, it's basically a three shot template weapon with multiple firing modes.
It does nicely against things like Guard and Orks, as it can nullify their numbers with the cover ignoring templates. Or, it can slow things down and keep them from hitting you for a turn or so.
It's supposed to be a bit of an all rounder weapon, and it's actually not too bad at the job.

Isn't it four? And I meant the artillery rules, not the cannon's rules.

Yes...it's four.
My Marine codex is currently buried.

I'm certain that there are two sizes of thunderfire cannon. And this box had pieces of both. I don't care if it makes its points back - it needs to make all this work back.

Don't worry. You'll vapourise entire platoons.

Yes, you're all very clever. But I have no idea what to do with this thing. I'm unclear on the unit rules. Sit it somewhere where it has cover, but also has line of sight. Then shoot things with it. Honestly that's all you need to do. If the enemy is relying on cover saves, use the cover ignoring thing, which is especially powerful against Orks and 'Nids with their 6+ saves.

I figured I'd stick it in a ruin, use the +1 to cover save thing twice form having two techies, sit back, and fire doom at GEQs. Preferably from altitude. That's always fun.

Not only is it good at taking down Platoons it's high strength makes it good for threatening MEQs and its Tremors can be used against short ranged tanks.

I wouldn't waste it on vehicles unless there was nothing left that it could see.

I've had it stop a leman russ dead in it's tracks with a well placed volley of shots. Which allowed some vanguard to jump in and rip it to shreds.
