it's a toss up between the grenade launcher and the plasma gun, and since the plasma gun already had a vote, I went with the GL for my vote.
GL has great Strength on the krak round and can really boost the number of S3 hits with its frag round if the enemy is clustered. it's awesome at forcing armor saves, which is how we get the job done on the field. it's also safe (no overheats), has awesome move and shoot range, and is cheaper than a plasma gun. that's alot of good things about one special weapon! frankly, if the space marines had the option to take GLs I'd tool them up with 'em quite heavily. I'm a fan of diversity, but the only gun I don't really use is the meltagun - it's just 1 shot at short range and it's alot of points for one die once in a game. if I need to kill stuff close in, I'll take a plasma - I get twice as many dice within 12" and beyond that, I have the 24" single shot to make use of too. flamers are good but the limited range really hampers their ability to see common use. they're a real 'johnny on the spot' weapon and take some finesse to use correctly, which often means making a squad do something it's not optimized to do in order to employ the flamer. I wish we could take flamers AND heavy flamers without jungle fighters but what's a guardsman to do eh?

Plasma gun. A pair of shots, s7, ap2? yes, please!
Probably one of the better weapon choices because of the range, rate of fire and ability to crack open anything from the lightest enemies to some of the heaviest tanks. Granted, I'm not too terribly fond of my happy little plasma gunner getting flambayed (it's a french word that i don't know how to spell, thus the phonetic) by his own weapon, but hey, They're guardies. Rule of acceptable losses.

The Sniper rifle. Deadly as a field mouse on cocaine.

Meltagun all the way. And why are you for something that is everything else then deadly commissar? I consider a field mouse on cocaine rather funny then deadly (but the overall performance my snipers did were funny as well)

GL - good range, KM's good str and AP against armour and tough and blast, FM's with blast for taking out swarms and troops with weak armour.

my personal vote is the plasma gun....effective weapon agenst anything wearing power armour and higher....powerful strength give an extra edge agenst armour. rapid fire range can make for increased kills due to the bonus shot. Platoons of 5 squads and a command platoon with plasma guns can make for a heck of a fire fight...

its gotta be the meltagun. makes a squad a serious threat, especially when loaded in a chimera with the sharpshooter abilty to re-roll 1s.
also useful for melting an annoying independent character in a small bubbling pile of (you love it you) slag

I am not a fan of sniper rifles, although I can appreciate they can be good for killing big fellas.
