I was asked how i based my minis, so here's a guide for those guys who want great looking yet easy to do bases.
Step One
Attatch your model to the base (kinda obvious)
Step Two
Add on gerneric looking 'cool bits'. These can be helmets, skulls etc. I went for rocks (very generic). Less is more, remember you still want to be putting on static grass and sand, ad want o be able to see your lovingly painted mini!
Step Three
Paint the base with pva, avoiding the rim of the base. If you get a bit on, don't worry, just wipe it off with your finger.
Step Four
Now add your sand. Depending on the base size, you can either sprinkle on the sand, or slide the base in a tub at a 45 degree angle at both sides, covering the base.
Any bits that stick to the rim, wipe off with your finger. If any grains adhere to your mini, use a paintbrush to gently wipe them off. now leave it to dry!
Step Five (the one i forgot )
Now mix up pva and water to a consistency of milk, and paint gently over the sand, It should fall between the grains nicely. This will stop the grains moving when you paint them. I forgot to do this, and the consequences are obvious: PATCHES IN YOUR SAND!
Fear not, if like me you forget, use the joy that is static grass to cover 'em up!
Step Six
Now carefully paint the base scorched brown. Don't worry about the rim too much, we'll do that later. Note how my sand has started lifting already.... what a dumbass.....!
Step Six-and-a-half
Paint the rocks Adeptus Battlegrey.
Step Seven
Drybrush the brown area with Greaveyard Earth and the rocks with Codex Grey.
Step Eight
Drybrush the earth lightly with Bleached Bone.
Step Nine
Now add small amounts of pva where you want your grass to appear. I find that small clumps look most realistic, although this is personal preference.
Step Ten
Dip in your base into the static grass....
And blow upwards from below the base rim to make the grass stick up! And your mini is based for a great look on most 'green' tables! TA DA!
