Does anyone else paint dirt onto the guardsmen? its common to see weathered tanks, but i've been painting my men with a bit of mud on boots, knees etc, and it adds that little bit of gritty reality for mine. I was wondering if anyone else bothered?

Ok if you want to make it look like fresh mud you drybrush the area with a mixture of Scorched brown and vermin brown. For dry mud you do the fresh mud process and drybrush graveyard earth over it.

well, mud does happen in the desert, mine have mud, and they look as if they are desert, it make sense, mud is dirt and water, and when it rains in deserts, or they run into an oasises, there will be mud. Even if it may not be entierly correct, i think dirty, mudy guardsmen look more interesting than clean guard. They never hit me as an army like that, eldar and tau on the other hand, just seem to me like a clean polished type army.

i agree, i think its the gritty hands on caked in mud and still fighting thing that make guardsmen so cool to me, cus they have to go through hell, with every army being better skilled at something, but they still fight. and i'd think they get covered in mud in the process

There is a tutorial in the GW LotR bit that shows that they use a bit of sand to create wear and tear. However, this is on cloaks so I doubt it's as useful for simple boots.

its not really wear on the boots, cus they're covered in mud, but i found the same techn ique for scratches on tanks works great on bits of armour
